GDP Growth Surges to Strong 3.4%

There's been some good economic news lately, despite the half-as-high-as-Biden-and-therefore-apocalyptic inflation.

October 1: Unemployment applications fell to the lowest level since July.

The four-week moving average was 200,000, a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average, the department also said.

Unemployment claims are a proxy indicator for layoffs, and they signal to economists where the job market is headed. So far this year, claims have remained below 220,000, which is a historic low.

American paychecks grew faster than the rate of inflation, which was totally not the case under Biden. So obviously Trump is a disaster.

American households have seen the buying power of their paychecks grow under President Trump, a welcome change from years of watching real compensation fall thanks to runaway inflation.

The average private-sector paycheck has grown faster than prices since President Trump took office, Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show. And in recent months, real pay is growing even faster.

From January 2025, the month Trump was inaugurated, through August 2026, average weekly earnings of all employees on private payrolls rose from $1,222.14 to $1,298.94, a gain of 6.3 percent. The Consumer Price Index rose 4.8 percent over those 19 months. Adjusted for inflation, the weekly paycheck was up 1.5 percent. In January 2025 dollars, that is a gain of about $18 a week, from $1,222 to $1,240.

The most recent three months were stronger. From May to August, the average paycheck rose from $1,285.91 to $1,298.94, or 1.0 percent, while prices were essentially unchanged, up 0.05 percent. Real weekly pay rose 1.0 percent in that span, about $12 a week. August is the latest month for which both earnings and prices are available. The September price index is scheduled for October 14.

Over the four years of the Biden administration, the paycheck shrank after inflation. From January 2021 to January 2025, average weekly earnings rose from $1,047.55 to $1,222.14, a gain of 16.7 percent. Prices rose 21.4 percent. Real weekly pay fell 3.9 percent. In the dollars of January 2025, the paycheck went from about $1,272 at the start of that administration to $1,222 at the end, a loss of about $50 a week.

The service industry grew at its fastest pace in five years. And exports grew, and hiring accelerated.

U.S. service-sector activity expanded in September at the fastest pace in more than five years, with technology businesses leading a broad advance as stronger demand encouraged companies to increase hiring, according to a survey released Monday by S&P Global.

The Services PMI Business Activity Index rose to 58.8 from 56.5 in August, marking its fourth consecutive monthly increase and the strongest expansion since July 2021. Readings above 50 indicate growth compared with the previous month.

Activity increased across all five broad services sectors covered by the survey for the first time in ten months. Information and communication businesses reported by far the strongest expansion, while transportation and storage returned to growth.

...

Export orders also increased for a second consecutive month, although their growth was much slower than the rise in total new business. The pace of export-order growth matched August's 20-month high.

Companies responded to rising workloads by adding workers for a third consecutive month. The pace of services job creation was the strongest since June 2022. Some businesses reported that they had been able to fill previously vacant positions.

The latest advanced estimate for the growth: a high 3.4% increase in the nation's gross domestic product.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.4 percent in the third quarter of 2026 (July, August, and September), according to the advance estimate released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). In the second quarter, real GDP increased 2.2 percent.

...

Compared to the second quarter, the acceleration in real GDP in the third quarter primarily reflected an acceleration in investment and an upturn in government spending that were partly offset by a downturn in exports. Imports increased more in the third quarter than in the second quarter.

...

The price index for gross domestic purchases increased 3.0 percent in the third quarter, compared with an increase of 5.6 percent in the second quarter. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index increased 2.1 percent, compared with an increase of 5.0 percent, and the PCE price index, excluding food and energy increased 2.5 percent, compared with an increase of 3.3 percent.

The conventional wisdom is that voters form their opinions about the state of the economy six months before an election. They do not update their opinions with late-coming information.

So this will not help us in the midterms. I guess maybe we could guess that people felt this growth before it was officially reported, but Gallup says economic confidence is low and has been for a long while.

The EU is looking at the reality of sponsoring the Ukraine war all by themselves.

____________

Where do they think this is going to end? Is Ukraine going to get its territory back? "On to Moscow"? A huge number of lives have been lost already. How many more are the EU willing to see die?

I don't know if Trump is right or wrong, but at least he's trying to stop two countries from grinding each other to powder. Don't see the geniuses in the EU trying out any ideas.

I believe it's become an existential thing for the left in Europe to maintain Russia as the enemy, along with Trump.

They know they are becoming more and more unpopular because of the effects of immigration and having an external enemy to point to as a threat that only they can confront is the basis of many a political system.

Even Poland which doesn't have the immigration problem that Western Europe has is still caught up in it because their PM is a far-left EU butt-boy and will do anything he can to complete their takeover of the most important Eastern European country.

They need somebody to point to and blame and Putin and to a lesser extent, Trump, are the targets.

If that means war, so be it.
They can rule over the ashes.

26 I noticed something interesting in my area. There are three different large grocery stores. The first two have relatively similar prices. The third, which just happens to have a major distribution center about five miles away has prices about 15% to 20% below the other two. I think this is partially due to diesel costs on trucking. But, it, also, likely is related to overstock and over shipping stock that gets sent to the nearest retail at reduced prices (especially if it is perishable).

My advice is to do a little research on your grocery providers. See who has the closest distribution center and shop there.

WWI by 1917 was at this point as well. The elites of all the warring powers had come to the end of their support from the common people and losing or even negotiating over losing would result in regime implosions.

EU is desperate to keep those hundreds of billions in Russian frozen assets and ending the war would require sending them back never to return to the EU, ditto for the UK. LaGardes strange resignation speech from teh EU Central Bank is also a tell. My guess, banks in Europe start imploding if the war ends in Ukraine and that stolen money has to be returned.

So they would gladly drag the US and their own countries into the abyss to fight a ruinous war with Russia in order to save their worthless skins.

70 Yes, blacks on commercials camp, hike, boat, swim in huge numbers. The reality is that most never walk on a non-paved surface. There are country blacks around here who might grill in their backyard, maybe fish once in a while, but their numbers are small.
In the 54 year history of The Price Is Right, maybe one black person was happy they won a boat.

They are using that as a facade to hide their deteriorating banks financials. Same as City of London. Trump ending the bleeding of dollars via trade imbalances to the EU is also part of it. Thus a pivot to authoritarianism where inconvenient national politicians are dispensed with like Orban, banned from taking office like in Romania, preventing political parties from taking office like in Germany and France, and riots by Muslims in the streets are allowed so that the implicit threat is the state is the only thing preventing them from taking over.

Read a newer novel recently where the main character is an obviously liberal woman. Adults realize countries don't have friends. Don't have permanent allies either. They do things for their countries interests and react when other countries make moves they deem not in their countries interests.

NATO pledged to Russia over and over since it's founding it would not move further eastward. NATO lied. Repeatedly. Putin warned he viewed it as an aggressive infringement on his sphere of influence much as we did when Russia tried to put missiles in Cuba. That almost caused WWIII.

Doesn't get mentioned much because it hurts the narrative but prior to the war the Ukrainian government killed thousands of ethnic men, women and children in the Donbas region. Putin was obviously not happy about that. He became he less happy when the west ran a coup in Ukraine and took down an elected leader that favored Russia over the west and installed a puppet government. 142 Putin is not our friend. His actions go well beyond the ebb and flow of established military and intelligence. His conquest of other countries is more an expression of his aspirations than anything else. Putins Russia is currently supporting a fair degree of the divisive nefarious activity taking place on our soil. His actions are overall offensive, not defensive when it comes to our country. Much of it is about his personal prestige, as it is with people of his stripe. We saw it first hand in places like Syria where we ran up against his mercs and SF. He wants conflict. He needs conflict. Don’t make the mistake of underestimating that and seeing everything through the eyes of Ukraine. Nor should you believe his view is shared by all in Russian leadership. Russia is a great product country and there are a lot of decent people there in leadership.

Plus they started a war with the dissident Donbas lands in 2014-5. Not sure what assistance Russia gave but they did not use troops. The Donbas forces surrounded the Ukraine troops and Ukraine sued for a ceasefire. Germany and France signed an agreement to guarantee for talks to settle the issues, and admitted a few years back they never intended to do so. Russia tends to be a stickler about that. These Minsk accords stalled all the way to the outbreak of the war.

I suspect that ending the war will come with promises by Ukraine to abandon NATO, give up the money laundering and laboratories. As far as Russia is concerned, if the Ukraine had taken all the money we gave them and built a wall, things would be less stabby and miserable all around.

We could have done better by them, possibly.
It was a chaotic situation and nobody had ever tried to de-transition a communist economy on that scale.

But Yeltsin is not entirely blameless here, either, the big, jovial, drunk, bear got himself into his own trouble without our help.
Yeltsin essentially sold off the biggest sectors of the economy to the oligarchs, and that's probably what Putin was most angry about.

Putin wants Russia to be treated as an equal by the U.S., and the west, but Russia has been too untrustworthy too many times for that to happen immediately.

I've never seen Putin threaten to conquer Europe.
He's threatened the West only when we encroached on what they feel is their sphere of influence in Eastern Europe and Asia. Georgia, and Ukraine (Crimea) especially, are important to Russia's defensive strategies, and Putin does not want to give those up to US & EU adventurism.

I am not a big Putin fan, but I am a realist when it comes to world affairs. Putin warned the West for a decade that if they kept encroaching on Russia by enlarging NATO they would respond. And that's exactly what he did when Ukraine moved towards joining the EU and NATO.

Russia is in no position to invade anybody else for the foreseeable future. This was Putin's last stand, and he's going to end it when he's ready and Russia's control of, and access to, Crimea and the Donbass is guaranteed.

Why would he want to invade Europe at this point?

217 Seeing this thing in Poland always gets my globalist conspiracy metered. Makes me wonder about shenanigans in our election.

That said, Poland is weird. I don't understand countries with a PM and a President. Pick one!

218 But we are talking about the Ukraine. And what Russian major military action has taken place outside of the former USSR states? Putin is no angel but i don't rank him close as our #1 adversary .

He's been offered that. Wants Odessa as well. He can stop anytime. Zelenskyy knows he can't push them back, and we have no intention of doing it for him. His domestic political situation means he knows times up. Putin faces an even bigger problem. His military has been shown to be inept and no longer first world. He has spent lots of time, treasure and blood. He was supposed to get Ukraine as a buffer. He feels he can't stop.
