Music Thread: Rip Your Lungs Out Edition

Hallocroc26.jpg

As Garrett's closet goes, these aren't the most offensive things in it!

Halloween is a silly and inoffensive pseudo-holiday that nonetheless has taken over America (and other parts of the world!). The best part is watching the wee little ones in their costumes, not particularly sure of what the hell is going on, but confident that people giving them candy is never a bad thing!

It's far better than Kwanzaa or National Executive Assistant Day or the other fake holidays that are much less fun, and almost always include a bit of hectoring and mandatory kowtowing to the demographic being celebrated.

Of course, I am an advocate for John Moses Browning Day, so maybe I am not impartial!

Before we get into the silliness of Halloween music, maybe a taste of something lovely, but with an apt name! Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered by Ella Fitzgerald

For the second time in a row, something a little different!

"Libiamo ne' lieti calici" is usually shortened to "Libiamo," and it is one of the great and popular arias in operatic history. The opera -- La Traviata -- which means "The Wayward," or "The Wayward Woman," was written by a guy named Joe Green, and with that pedestrian a name, of course he is going to write about drinking!

First saw Zappa in '65, I was fourteen, we got let into a bar /club behind Fenway that a friends brother worked at and we'd occasionally do Sunday morning cleanup work at. The Ark, I think. Quite different from the Dave Clark Five, the only other live band I had seen to that point.

30 My first experience of Rocky Horror wasn't seeing it,

I first saw it in college. Had no idea what to expect, but after the first time my friends and I went to see it again one or two times more. Never dressed up. Might have brought rice, I can’t remember.

I just watched it again on my own after Tim Curry died. It’s still a funny parody of old science fiction (of which I’m also watching a bit more of now) and fun music.

Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at October 31, 2026 08:18 PM (kYmoU)

31 Libiamo is a wonderful and fun aria. UNLESS you are a bass in the chorus. The bass line is basically going oom-pah-pah to a waltz rhythm the whole damn time. Except for a very few basso profundo roles, Joe Green, that Italian SOB, didn't like deep voices. Probably included a few to meet union demands. He even made Otello, a huge Moorish warrior, a tenor. Sheesh!

Not that I have an opinion on the matter.

JackStraw,

In the 60's there was a dive off Thames Street. The part that was called Blood Alley by locals. Can't recall the name. It had a pot belly stove for warmth, served strong drinks and the air filled with sea shanties. Pretty nice place for a New England winter night with the wind coming off the bay. Probably long gone along with the topless dancing bars now that the area has been gentrified.

I don't know when you were last back but in the last number of years so much gentrification has gone on Newport has become a completely different place. Once they started turning the boatyards into condos and bars, well you can imagine.

Still a lot of fun but that soul has changed. I don't go there nearly as much anymore. I just sit on my little island that barely changes and watch the world go by.
