O Captain: Patrick Stewart Dead at 86

He's been looking more and more frail for years.

Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles following "a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia," longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak announced.

"He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all," Bush Novak wrote. "We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace."

Please feel free to use this thread to talk about off-topic stuff, like movies or shows or books you'd recommend. I had not planned a mid-day entertainment thread, so I have not much to add here. I wasn't a fan of Star Trek: TNG or Stewart for that matter, but I know that many people were.

As everyone always points out, he was one of the first knights to declare for Arthur in Excalibur. Which, as everyone also always says, was filled with no-name actors who would soon become big names: Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson, for example. Plus Helen Mirren and the great Nicole Williamson, who had previously dated and absolutely loathed each other and had to be cajoled into working together. But I think they were already kinda well-known, and they didn't become big stars like Byrne and Neeson.

So here's what I'm watching: Elementary, again, and Person of Interest, this time, for the third time.

Both shows are good but Person of Interest continually surprises me with how many genuinely good moments it has and how much smart science fiction stuff. It was commenters who recommended it to me, ten or twelve years ago. I think maybe Garrett said it was "Daredevil in a business suit," which is semi-accurate, but actually downplays how good it is.

If you don't know the premise: An ultra-reclusive computer genius with the fake name "Harold Finch" created an artificial super-intelligence after 9/11 to scan all of the trillions of megabytes of data being hoovered up to find the actual terrorists and their plots. But the ASI, called "The Machine," was too good at its job and didn't just find terror plots, but any kind of premeditated crime like kidnapping and murder. It began alerting the government to these threats, but the government wanted to limit what The Machine did, largely because the entire scheme was unconstitutional and illegal and they didn't want to have to explain how they're suddenly showing up at murder scenes before the murder is committed. They can tell some lies to explain how they foil the occasional terrorist attack, but they don't want to like 1,500 times a year about the murders they thwart.

So they declare all non-terrorism-related threats "irrelevant" and ignore them.

But Harold Finch is haunted by these preventable murders that he could stop but doesn't. So he uses the backdoor he built into the computer to tell it to send him the social security numbers, and only the social security numbers, of people The Machine predicts are either going to be the victim of serious violence, or the perpetrator.

And because he's a pencil-necked geek, he recruits a special forces ex-terrorist-hunter with the pseudonym "John Reese" to be the strongman of the team and actually deal with the threats.

So the premise is: This is a murder mystery show, but we enter the murder mystery before murder happens, and if we can figure out who is being threatened and by whom, we won't just solve the murder, we'll prevent the murder.

It's a great premise.

Many shows would just take this premise and run with it, ignoring the background story of how this is even possible.

But Person of Interest takes it to the next level and also features stories about The Machine itself, and specifically, dangerous foreign nations who have figured out that America now has an ASI and want to seize it for themselves.

Most episodes are about stopping murders and kidnappings, but a fair number are about the fight to keep The Machine secret and safe from the very dangerous people who would like to hijack it.

And the sci-fi and legal framework is solid. For example, the reason the government says it's legal to scan everyone's emails and bank statements is that it's just a computer looking, and it doesn't count as a "search" until a human sees the information. (That's why Finch's machine only supplies social security numbers -- the humans have to do the real digging themselves.)

The point is: this isn't just something they made up for the show. This is the real-world government legal position on the use of computers and artificial intelligence to search and analyze records.

The show doesn't treat you like a moron (mostly). For example, we'll see a POV shot from Reese, where he looks down at a man's pantleg and there's a slight bulge at his ankle. He doesn't say "ankle gun" to the audience. The show relies on you having seen the bulge yourself, so you know why Reese reaches for the man's ankle after punching him in the gut.

And it has a lot of espionage stuff too. It's basically a mix of your four favorite genres: Mystery/detective, spy action-adventure, science-fiction, and street-level superhero.

Highly recommended, including for a rewatch, if you haven't seen it again. It holds up.

30 TNG was best when it didn't follow the formula (which, as 18-1 notes, existed).
I might go watch Yesterday's Enterprise again. Alternate-reality where Picard helms a warship. Third season is where TNG starts arising from the bullshit of the first season and the writers-strike of the second [although I do like the ep where Riker is an officer for the Klingons]

OPutside of Star Trek, that's what I remember him for, along with 'Gurney Halleck' in Dune (1984).
And of course, Professor Xavier, in X-Men, which he did a really fine job with.

I liked Stewart in some other things as well.
His Ebeneezer Scrooge wasn't bad, and he did that Moby Dick movie I watched once.

I'm glad he got a chance to do the Picard series, even if the first and second season pretty much sucked, the third season was a nice little reunion show of TNG, so I enjoyed it.

Sucks about Stewart's politics, but he was a Brit, so you get what you get.

I honestly don't know, but my two favorite Patrick Stewart moments:

The Ice Bucket Challenge (some time in the 2010s?): All the other celebrities get doused by ice or what not. He gets a bucket of ice next to a really nice chair and writes a check for whatever the cause was supposed to be. Then pours himself some alcohol. Because the point was raising money.

Telling about his time on the set of Dune, where he meets Sting and unintentionally humbled him because he honestly had no idea who Sting was. Absolutely hilarious.

A movie based on the country music song, Ol' Red, has been green-lit. Pre-production starts early next year with filming to follow.

There have been many threads on Reddit over the years asking opinions on which songs would make great movies and Ol' Red is almost always one that is mentioned, multiple times, even.

No idea who is going to star in it, and you won't find this being reported on the internet movie sites yet, but my information comes from a source about as close to the horse's mouth as one can get.

84 Because it's an open thread by my love, Ace the Great, I'm going to post a blues song I love. Not because I have the blues, just the doldrums.

Things are looking up as I now don't have to cook dinner, which leaves me more time to do the dreaded chores that are going away soon. I love to cook when there is not stuff to do.

My dude is a blues acoustic man by hobby and innate talent. Taught himself piano and guitar as a teen, and hardly reads music. Probably due to being a math genius. He can hear a song and play it on the piano. Not how he made his money to provide for us, as that involved computers and stuff I don't understand at all.

I don't have the blues (just the procrastination), but I love the guitar on this song as well as the entire song. He introduced this to me on a car drive up the mountains many years ago.

He's a walking juke box. We hear a song in the movies and I ask who did that...and he knows.

He's a big Moron but just hasn't met you...after all he married me, and God help him, he's stuck with me.

Still Got the Blues

101 >>>82 Worf was badly mistreated in TNG IIRC.

I saw people note that they did the same thing with Worf that they did with Superman on Justice League.

Whenever they wanted to prove that a new villain was tough and powerful, they'd have him come in and immediately one-shot and rag-doll Worf (and Superman).

I know the writers of Justice League realized that after they'd done this 20 times, they had inadvertently turned Superman into "the guy who immediately goes down in a fight."

and then I saw a compilation of Worf being used the same way, as the object that gets smashed to prove the new threat is serious.

(Kind of the same problem the Leonardo DiCaprio character had in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. )

Picard was the intellectual's captain.
He really tried to avoid violence unless necessary but he did get pissed off enough a few times where he turned into a madman.

Picard was a very human ST captain.

One of his best episodes, and one of Stewart's best job acting, was an episode where he returned home to France, "Family", to be with his brother and his wife & son after the Borg had transformed Picard into 'Locutus of Borg'. Picard at that point was considering leaving Starfleet, but decided not to after a fight with his brother in the family wine vineyard over Picard being afraid to get back to his life again and head back to Enterprise.

151 > Kind of the same problem the Leonardo DiCaprio character had in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I liked that part of the movie. It's an interesting conversation about realistically examining your position and your options. Sure, you're in Hollywood and appearing on TV and movies. But you're the "heavy" and you're always going to lose. The audience knows you, but will always associate you with the losing position. Why not go to Italy, make some money, be the winner for a bit, and enjoy the break?

The conversation feels real, and it does a good job painting the picture for the audience. This is a journeyman actor who is on the way out.

153 I'm sure this has been done before, but what about this for a show idea: A crime drama. Starts off standard. Detective solves crime. Yay. Then as the season progresses, you start to notice that the solutions to the crimes are getting sloppier and sloppier, with bigger holes, and even the judges and lawyers are starting to realize the guy is slipping and they can't even prosecute his shit anymore. Then it turns out the detective had been the murderer all along. And probably also a drunk. They always have to be a drunk, for some reason. I don't know why.

That was well written. The characters acted like they should have in their situations and did what they reasonably should in their situation with their abilities. Its so frustrating watching 99% of shows where people don't do things they ought to because it would harm the story the writer wanted to tell.

Yeah, pretty disappointed myself. It just seems to meander around. It introduces "mysteries" that are not very mysterious, the resolution of which is sorta boring. Doesn't help that it hops around between different versions of the same character and keeps introducing new characters.

The way I would write this (we've talked about it before here) is to have it run exactly like an Agatha Chrsitie-type adventure. She comes up with this complicated solution that makes the police detective with a simpler answer look foolish and nails someone. But after a few books, the detective eventually proves she's killed all of those people and framed others.

206 I enjoyed TNG when they stuck to classic SciFi themes. Exploration, problem solving, perseverance, unknown threats, and situations were all fun things for the characters to experience, explore, and overcome. But I could never fully embrace the concept because I simply don't understand why anyone would choose to be a secondary character on a star ship. You can go find any life you want.

If you want to be a big fish in a small pond, you can find a sparsely populated, beautiful planet and thrive. You ship in a replicator and a nearly endless power unit and you're all set for life.

If you have political aspirations, go do that. If you want to create, go do that. If you want to be a hedonist, go do that.

But why would you bust your butt to get into Starfleet academy only to end up a third tier night shift maintenance man? All of the work, danger, no pay, isolation, etc. for what benefit? You get a small bunk, a small job, and no recognition. The best part of your day is Troi walking by and you get a glimpse of her butt. Why would you live that life?

Ciaran Hinds -- there's a strange little flick called The Eclipse, with Hinds, Aidan Quinn, and Iben Hjelje. A sorta kinda ghost story maybe set around a small literary festival in Ireland. Worth a watch.

240 I saw people note that they did the same thing with Worf that they did with Superman on Justice League.

About a group of tourists in the Louisiana swamps to see gators and instead run afoul of a very territorial hippo or two.

I'm not going to tell you that it's a great movie but it is a very entertaining one. Well worth a watch.

There will be chomping!

BONUS! You get a minor history lesson. The story's premise is based on a 1910 Congressional Bill to introduce hippos into Louisiana to alleviate a meat shortage. In reality the bill didn't pass. In the movie hippos were brought in anyway.

Smith solved it with an irreplicable substance. DS9 had latinum, a liquid at room-temperature but could be encased in some noble metal that wouldn't alloy itself with it. This tended to be gold.

Almost the premise of a Henry Kuttner (Lewis Padgett) story about a dude trying to get away with murder in a world where the cops could look back in time after the murder looking for clues. Has a twist ending. Called Private Eye.

Alfred Bester's Demolished Man was a murder investigation where the cops are telepathic but have to find real world evidence. Another twist at the end.

No. We're not in a "post scarcity" world. If your choice is working in the local factory, working a farm, or military, lots of young guys will choose military. You get the GI bill. You get a good disposable income. You might get to play will expensive guns. For many decades, the US military was a pretty good option compared to some of the alternatives.

What's the sales pitch in Star Trek in a post scarcity world? You can go anywhere and do anything and you choose that?

335 From Yahoo News, TV ratings so not totally out of entertainment field.

"Fox News is suffering a catastrophic drop in viewership, which has plunged to historic lows just before the midterm elections, according to new data.

Preliminary Nielsen ratings obtained by Status ahead of their official release show that the Trump-friendly juggernaut is on track to post its lowest-rated month in total day viewers since December 2023, averaging just 1.1 million total viewers throughout October 2026. However, last year's ratings were buoyed by huge stories, including the Gaza ceasefire and the hostage release.

Among the key 25-54 demographic coveted by advertisers, the outlet is headed for its lowest-rated month in a quarter-century, averaging a paltry 98,000 viewers. It places third in that group, and fifth among 18-49 demos.

The collapse represents a brutal 27 percent drop in total viewers and a 32 percent dive in the 25-54 demographic compared to last October.'

355 But the ASI, called "The Machine," was too good at its job and didn't just find terror plots, but any kind of premeditated crime like kidnapping and murder.

Here's the problem I'd have with the show:

90+% of murders are just gang members and streets criminals shooting at each other randomly with their Glocks held sideways, often hitting bystanders.

Drivebys.

Fentanyl-addict liquor-store robberies gone bad.

Low-IQ pimps flying into a rage and killing their street hookers.

Etc. etc. etc.

And most of the remaining 10% of murder are semi-spur of the moment domestic violence flipouts.

Which leaves us with maybe 1%-2% of murders at most[/b[ that are premeditated Agatha-Christie-style planned murders. They're actually comparatively rare.

But in the show, it is depicted that all these thousands of murders can be "predicted" because they're "planned ahead of time." Nuh-uh. In the real world, it ain't like that.

From cops I know and have read about say the hardest murder to solve is the passing through. Two guys get in a fight or just road rage, or some crazy shoots someone as they pass through town and are in another state by the time the body is found.

Uh, oh. I just had a thought experiment flash through my brain.

Most spaceships in science fiction television/movies have artificial gravity, right? (keeps budgets down)

So do they have standard toilets like we do here on Earth?

What happens when someone is using it and the artificial gravity fluctuates because of a technology glitch?

393 There is an entire episode on TNG of Wesley applying to get into Starfleet.

They have to take be recommended, like West Point, and admitted after testing and other procedures.

One of the places that TNG was "Beyond Stupid".

I just finished binge-watching Season 5, and I think they're setting up a possible ending for River in S6, just in case. Final S5 episode, he tells Louisa that he's leaving MI5. And Diana definitely said that she didn't want him back from Slough House, despite Lamb going to bat for him to return to regular service.

I'm starting S6 tonight, so I'm wondering where it's going from here.

As for Lowden, I think he'd make a pretty decent mid-level Bond, and he's the right age. Needs some creatine and gym time though, but if Amazon throws money at him, he'll put in the work.

There’s a clip going around of Nick Cage plsying John Madden in an upcoming Prime bio-flick.

Somebody commented that Cage’s Madden impression is 10% Jimmy Stewart and 90% Nick Cage, which is a dead-on description.
It looks like an SNL skit with Cage in a fat suit, doing the cold opener waiting on him to say And Tonight Live From New York.

418 98 Still Got the Blues ... is that a Gary Moore cover?
Or, a different song by the same name?
Posted by: garrett at October 29, 2026 04:47 PM (Qugny)
*****
Gary Moore wrote it and sang this song.
Love his voice and guitar. I'm fascinated with musicians who used to travel to the Delta of Mississippi to see blues singers at the origins. Or who grew up listening to albums. I had no idea of the connection til the last decade.

Gary Moore was Irish, loved blues but never went to MS. Tin Lizzy to the blues.
https://tinyurl.com/fnbjazec

The singers of note who traveled there to work with singers: Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top). Eric Clapton made and album with BB King.

Others were influenced by Blues Revival, such as Jimmy Page and the Rolling Stones, growing up listening to their music. Some learned from blues/jazz singers/guitarists touring in the UK like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and BB King. Kim Simmons of Savoy Brown also grew up listening to R&B.

Marc Cohen visited, and I love this song:
Walking in Memphis (there really was a Muriel)

But it was really good and how CBS treated it at the end was egregious. It wasn't a CBS property, it was a WB production and CBS wanted to own shows with a syndication back end they didn't get with that. PoI hasn't done well in syndication for some reason, though.
