Excellent painting. Probably Dali's best work. One detail that leaps out at me is that Christ has a great head of hair, and is very fit. This is the portrait of a young man in his prime. Not a beaten and broken crucified man. I take this then to be a depiction of Christ's victory over death and the cross. There are no nails, no crown of thorns. Nothing to bind him. The cross is a fact, but so is the life of the Son of God. Posted by: naturalfake at October 26, 2026 09:57 AM (YSUhf) 41
There is a Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida that is pretty nice.
I went to it the late 90s. The building itself is very cool, they have a very large collection of Dali's works and, of course, a gift shop with poster prints, t-shirts and the like. And since it's in the Tampa-St.Pete area there's plenty to do once you leave the museum. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 26, 2026 09:58 AM (6ydKt) 42
Q: How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Two - one to change the bulb and one to throw all the clocks in the bathtub. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at October 26, 2026 09:58 AM (bFu5X) 43
Dali is a maddening artist. All that incredible talent often subsumed by a deliberate flamboyant lifestyle and interesting, bizarre (even if technically brilliant) surreal paintings.
Then he does something like today's image: realistic detail of musculature (look at Saint John's hands) and human figures with completely natural tones, realistic shadows the emphasize the light, fascinating perspective, clean exact lines of the cross against the human figures and other parts, and glowing but still natural colors. He combines these components into a powerful, emotional image. Just to prove this wasn't a one off, he also did The Last Supper, which I saw at the National Gallery. It is a work of genius even though not traditional. But the same elements that make today's painting so effective are used in The Last Supper. Posted by: JTB at October 26, 2026 09:59 AM (yTvNw) 44
Funny, this is such a striking, provocative painting, I never noticed before how the Christ figure is so unblemished — no blood, no scars, no crown of thorns. Who was Dali actually painting on the cross?

From wikipedia:
On the bottom of his studies for the painting, Dali explained its inspiration: "In the first place, in 1950, I had a 'cosmic dream' in which I saw this image in colour and which in my dream represented the 'nucleus of the atom.' This nucleus later took on a metaphysical sense; I considered it 'the very unity of the universe,' the Christ!" Posted by: olddog in mo at October 26, 2026 10:03 AM (ViCCR) 49
More from wiki:
In order to create the figure of Christ, Dali had Hollywood stuntman Russell M. Saunders suspended from an overhead gantry, so he could see how the body would appear from the desired angle and also envisage the pull of gravity on the human body. The depicted body of water is the bay of Portlligat, in Catalonia, Spain, Dali's residence at the time of the painting Posted by: olddog in mo at October 26, 2026 10:05 AM (ViCCR) Posted by: Smell the Glove at October 26, 2026 10:05 AM (h7zKj) 51

Christ of Saint John of the Cross, 1951
Different for Dali & I like it, though it would be doubtful I'd hang it. Conversatio dot org, A Meditation on Salvador Dalí’s Christ of St. John of the Cross, O Taste and See, Tara M. Owens "The lower scene depicts two fishermen, standing by the shore of a preternaturally brilliant and gorgeous lake. Immediately, we identify it as the Sea of Galilee. Is this Dalí’s way of reminding us of the calling of the first disciples? On closer inspection, things turn out to be a little more complex. The fishermen are wearing seventeenth-century dress. In fact, they seem to have been copied from Diego Velázquez’s The Surrender of Breda, painted some time before 1635. And the “lake” is actually a harbour—in this case, Dalí’s home town of Port Lligat, on the Spanish Costa Brava, which had already featured in his The Madonna of Port Lligat (1950). Then we realize what is going on. Dalí, like other leading Spanish artists of the twentieth century, including Picasso, regarded Velázquez as Spain’s greatest painter. Port Lligat is the place where Dalí lived. What Dalí has done is recast the calling of the disciples... " (Much more follows.) 👍🏻 Posted by: L - No nic.... at October 26, 2026 10:22 AM (NFX2v) 65

That was an odd part of the story CBD linked: 'If we imprison her we'll have to release far more violent MEN!'
Oh, fuck off, you simpering shit. Posted by: Aetius451AD at October 26, 2026 10:44 AM (Y/06r) ---- Wait. So if she is imprisoned judges will release MORE violent men? How does that track? Aren't judges already releasing violent men--especially illegal immigrants--back into society? Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at October 26, 2026 10:46 AM (FZ29D) 104

@cardiffcouncil Tonight, Cardiff Castle will light up green to mark Dwarfism Awareness Day. Which means she's stupid. If she was competent, then she knows she was selling vaporware.

Tuna. 3 years ago I hired a contractor to spay for weeds in the cemetery. He wouldn't spray over the graves since he didn't know if the people buried were ok with pesticides. Insert emoji of head being slapped in frustration.

Holmes entire "idea" was 'let's miniaturize something.' It was a solution in search of a problem. Her powerful reality-distortion field (second only to that of Steve Jobs,) hoodwinked a lot of old codgers who should have known better.
