Enforcer M1 Carbine S&W Disassembly B-52 Loading - Internal Stores Left Lane Campers No, not camping in a tent, but rather the *&$#@^*%$ people who cruise merrily in the left passing lane on a highway. In my 1,400 mile odyssey to and from Texas I encountered way too many of these retards. Cop: "Any guns in the car?" Retard: "No" Cop: "Why not?" Honestly, I'd have preferred to see the driver pulled from the car and beaten rather than merely being given a warning. Our Pal The Sine Bar Featuring professor Prabhakarna Sripalvardana Atapattusanatungajayasuriya. Highway Patrol! This week's episode: Fear! Atomic Attack! ![]() OK Hordemates, lets first look at what the producers say about it: "The Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Box-Pressed Maduro" is a medium to full-bodied Nicaraguan "puro" blended with a dark, oily 6-year old Cuban-seed Nicaraguan wrapper that has been bourbon barrel-aged for an additional 14 months and is paired with 6-year old Cuban-seed Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos to create naturally sweet flavors with hints of dark cocoa and espresso on the finish. A hell of a long sentence, and yes, it's all true. Now, what I discovered with mine (that I enjoyed on my patio on a beautiful Pacific NW sunny afternoon along with the last of my Monkey Shoulder scotch) was a cigar that looked and felt nice, but in the first inch, offered a really bitter, dark chocolate taste. I did not enjoy that. Patoooey! But... Starting the second inch, the cigar became perfectly normal, offering a mellowing flavor of tobacco and cedar plus a hint, just a hint, of the bourbon barrel aging mentioned above. Actually I really didn't catch much of that, and that is fine. Thinking back, I can remember it. As it turned out, my cigar didn't need it. A fair and even smoke, smooth ash, and a pleasant finish. I would smoke this again, but I think I'd pair it with a bourbon or even beer instead of scotch. This is a working man's cigar, and I'm OK with that. Not overly expensive, give it a try!Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Finally got my CMP 1911. I got a remington rand model that was made in late 1944. I doubt it ever saw any combat in WWII as it is in very good condition. It has very little wear and just a few nicks in the metal. The grips are both marked "75" in red paint and it was done with a stencil. This one probably sat in some stateside post armory for 50+ years until it got turned back into the Army depot.
The barrel is a bit dark but that is to be expected using corrosive ammo. Rifling is OK. I won't be able to get it out to shoot for another couple of weeks. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at October 25, 2026 07:08 PM (I43vL) 16

So, first off, testing, results and match results. First: Initial test results with 153.5 grain Berger Hybrid Bullets out of a 28" barrel are promising. About 2920 fps and around .5 MOA group. I'm pretty sure I can shrink the group. If it works out, this will be my new 1,000 yard load. There's no denying the 7mm guys have an advantage in the wind so I'm hoping to shave off some of their advantage. We shall see.
500 meter silhouette match: Third match in a row I've gone 18 for 20. The perfect 20 for 20 still eludes me. But, on the bright side, I had two rounds left at the end of the match and picked up the silhouette I missed @ 300 meters and 500 meters. My consolation prize. When I got to Ohio it came on again when I slowed down to go into the hotel. This was on the Tuesday before the MoMe. Nice review Diogenes.
I've tried the 10th Anniversary Maduro once. It was in the lounge at the Perdomo HQ in Miami Gardens, FL. A perfecto - not a vitola I ever choose, but time was a bit short. The incredibly Miami rush hour traffic delayed my arrival at Perdomo until about 30 minutes before closing. People there were great. I bought a variety of sticks for the sailing trip I was embarking on the next day. They said just go into the staff kitchen and get any drink you'd like out of the fridge. I joked with one guy about how I was scared by the life-size cutout of DJ Trump in the lounge, he answered oh yeah, scary, huh? This was a few days before the '24 election. By the time I finished my 10th Anniversary, most employees had left. Nick III hung out with me on the front porch until my Uber showed up. We talked the cigar biz and the election. Great guy. He waited until I was getting into my ride to lock up. They already had a customer, now they have one for life. Posted by: rhomboid at October 25, 2026 07:39 PM (U/Byj) 52

Weasel you need to spend time on SoCal freeways. Left lane campers unknown (to me). Quite the opposite. You want to use the fast lane, be ready to go 75-80 (regardless of conditions). Much faster/worse up in LA, as it has always been. The HOV lanes on the lower 405 near Irvine (which are yuuge, double, spacious) ..... 85 is sort of the floor for speed.
Incompetent/dangerous drivers have become such a large minority that driving is often anything but fun now. Had a nice chat with an older (50s) CHP officer at my local cigar shop about it. He was a local, and old enough to understand what I was saying when I pointed out how bad it's become. He said they lack resources to deal with what I was talking about, as they had to focus on the racers, and really really reckless speedsters. FWIW, I don't recommend taking a S&W revolver down especially an old one. If a part is broken, often they have to be fitted either using a part from a donor gun or in the rare case that a new old part exists, these can often be oversized and designed to be filed/stoned down to fit an individual revolver.
Anything that deals with timing such as the ratchet (ratchets are hand fitted usually for a particular revolver), hands, bolts, cylinder stops, etc. For most people taking the side plate off and spraying it down with a clear guncleaner (usually mineral spirits nowadays) and patting it dry is enough. A few things like the main spring, strain screw, etc. can be tightened but actions are best left alone. This is even more true with old Colts prior to coil mainsprings, High Standard Sentinel series, and doing more than field stripping a Ruger Security Series or GP 100/Redhawk. Single actions are a bit easier to work on. Never worked on one but Charters, especially old ones and Tauruses are reputed to be a pita to work on. There was a guy there who wanted to do a Form 4 because he didn't trust the feds to not change their policy again and hem him up. Can't say I really blame him but the sales guy was like "Uh, we don't do that anymore." I guess because they've changed their process and can't deviate from it. Which seems a little weird to me. I mean, just do what you would have done a week and a half ago. But it looked like they weren't going to.

One last thing. Removing a Colt, Taurus, or a Smith and Wesson side plate--NEVER pry it off--it will damage it. First remove the screws holding the side plate using a proper screwdriver with the correct bit size.
Instead, use a wood dowel, a wood handle of a small ball pein hammer, etc. and whack it on teh back side away from the sideplate side. No steel or brass hammer needed, just vibration from the wood hitting the steel to loosen it. If stuck, then apply penetrating oil or some other really fine machine oil to the junction, let it sit, then try again in a few minutes. Percussion should loosen the sideplate where you can remove it without prying even on old revolvers. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 08:03 PM (E4rtv) 84
Rugers and High Standard Sentinels have no side plate for their double action revolvers. Not a coincidence, Harry Seyfried designed the Sentinel first and then went to work for Ruger designing the Security, Redhawk and initial GP100 designs.

One thing to watch for in WWII era 1911's is that inductive heat treatment of the slide was used as a wartime expedient. Treat them gently as in no high power loads as the heat treatment can be spotty on some.
Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 07:41 PM (E4rtv) IIRC, heat treatment was applied to the slide stop notch and the front end of the slide. Hardening of the front end of slide began with the 1940 Army contract for 4,696 pistols. Colt began heat treating the slide stop notch in early 1943 (circa above SN# 880,000). These will show as discoloration between these locations and the rest of slide. Refinished slides usually have more prominent discolorations, probably due to the refinishing process. Check these locations for cracking because these are known high stress locations on the 1911's slide. Any evidence of cracking should make you retire that slide from any further use. 74 Yeah full revolver disassembly is not in my wheelhouse.
Only time I defied Official Recommendations was when I did a total disassembly of my XD-9. Went fine. Also replaced the recoil stop pin before that (easy). Full disassembly of one of my M1s is overdue (plus, have to fix/replace the rear sight, it slips down during shooting. I only do this every few years, as lock-up in the stock is key and isn't helped by removing/reinserting the receiver. Posted by: rhomboid ====== Most newer firearms are made on CNC machines and have interchangeable parts starting about 1990's or so. Same with ARs, Glocks, or Ruger 10/22's. Watch out for early MIM parts also from S&W in particular which started in the 90's. Took awhile to get the process correct and that is one of the headaches working on Smith and Wessons from that era. For anyone with older revolvers, M1 rifles, Mausers, M1 Carbines, etc.
I strongly recommend Jerry Kuhnhausen's Shop Manual for the particular firearm you have (if you have older firearms). Amazon has some if not all but so does Midway USA. I can also recommend Brownell's Gunsmith Kinks, Volumes 1-4 if you want to know more about gunsmithing/troubleshooting older firearms. He was a top notch gunsmith in CA back in the day and took exhaustive notes and pictures, diagrams, etc. of complete disassembly, trouble shooting checklist, and reassembly of the firearms that he covers. Even if you never plan on doing anything other than troubleshooting, the manual is worth its price because you can talk with the gunsmith about what you think the problem is knowledgeably. Posted by: Oddbob High Standard Sentinels and some other European and older offbrand firearms were put together with pins and a bare minimum of screws. In the Sentinel, it is about like building a ship inside a bottle as the little 22 LR Sentinel is a solid frame revolver but without Harry Seyfried's later idea of having a trigger action subcomponent removable as a whole. Ruger GP100's, Security Series, and Redhawks share this design and are easy to field strip for cleaning as well as being tough. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 08:31 PM (E4rtv) 101

Of all the wobbly shit, if your action screws are not torqued properly on a rifle, your receiver will flop around, your shots will spray in a meaningless pattern for some, vertical or horizontal patterning in others. And it will very likely damage your stock if not other parts. To find the proper torque for action screws, consult the owners manual if you have it, look online for it if you don't or buy one from Ebay, or if an old military rifle, you can generally find that in old military manuals.
For mounting scopes, action screws, and other such things, Midway's FAT Torque Wrench is pretty handy for most firearms and scopes. Fix-It Sticks are fine too but expensive for a complete set. For one rifle or two, those can be another option as foolproof in use. Usually these torque levels are in inch pounds except for foreign arms. Those use Newton Metres (n-m). A regular torque wrench often doesn't work well on screws etc. due to clearance but those are an option too. Beware cheap Chinesium generic makes as they may not be worth the paper their torque specs are printed upon. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 08:48 PM (E4rtv) 122

Posted by: man Eh, I use it and used to use liquid paper as cheap markers on parts. Harder now to find liquid paper than it is fingernail polish. On old iron sights, cheap and nasty fingernail polish in orange, yellow, or iridescent green can be applied to front and rear sights as well to make them pop. Cheap and nasty lipstick is actually pretty decent when fitting a stock as a marker where the action is still binding on a wood stock. Lampblack is better but a pain to remove after application and makes a bigger mess than lipstick. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 08:50 PM (E4rtv) 126

Posted by: Gref at October 25, 2026 08:39 PM (5rh/l) Substantial numbers of 1911s were used in Operation Desert Storm by the 3rd Armored Division, artillery brigades and support units assigned to VII Corps, and by National Guard and US Army Reserve units mobilized for that war. National Guard and USAR units would not hand in their last 1911s for M9s until the late 1990s. The USMC was never a fan of the M9. Many units (especially in the USMC Reserve's 4th Marine Division) found excuses to they hang on to their 1911s until they had no other choice. The 4th Marine Division contributed a couple of infantry battalions, its recon battalion, and tank battalion to Operation Desert Storm and the push to Kuwait City. 86 One thing to watch for in WWII era 1911's is that inductive heat treatment of the slide was used as a wartime expedient.
Speaking of muzzle devices...
I got invited to a range on a military installation to go shoot some cool guy weapons once, back in the day. They had a Barrett M109 set up on a bench where the muzzle of the gun ends up being at about waist level. Iconic big old muzzle brake with ports at 45 degrees facing backward. I highly recommend not standing just off the shooter's side where that backward-firing gas intercepts you right at crotch level. Just saying. Posted by: man I use linear comps on rifles that I have to shoot inside, they do nothing for recoil but are much kinder to people around you on the firing line as it sends the blast downrange mostly rather than to the sides. Indoor shooting next to some dude shooting an AR-10 in 308 with a muzzle brake once made me vacate that lane pronto. Unpleasant as heck. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:07 PM (E4rtv) 159

I've never been bothered by people shooting big stuff indoors. I'm going to a gun range, there are going to be loud noises, and if I'm indoors I'm doubling up my ear pro anyway. As long as nobody's being a retard on the safety rules (which is basically never so I avoid indoor ranges almost entirely), I consider it part of the experience. Frankly, there just isn't much/ any real recoil improvement over the standard birdcage or multi prong, IMHO.... Maybe on an ultra light build, but on a 7 lb or so AR? Doubt it. Lesson learned. Posted by: man at October 25, 2026 09:13 PM (pfXMo) 165

If your slide is a Colt slide, Colt slides had serial numbers underneath the firing pin stop. Colt did this for 1911A1s starting in 1924 though circa SN# 1,145,000 (mid-1944). To see the serial number, you'll have to CAREFULLY remove the firing pin stop by pressing down on the firing pin with a punch, allowing the firing pin stop to be removed from the top of the slide. SLOWLY let up on the pressure when you're done. Do the same thing in reverse to put the firing pin stop back when you're done. The firing pin spring is under a fair amount of pressure, so don't lose your firing pin! Posted by: Ed L at October 25, 2026 09:15 PM (z32fn) Posted by: man at October 25, 2026 09:15 PM (pfXMo) 167

Posted by: ballistic Muzzle brakes are not pleasant to be around nor conducive to good shooting. Anything that can cause a flinch can create a similar situation to the yips in putting. Fortunately, I look forward to an era of cheap and easy to obtain suppressors for rifles and that will help the problem a lot on indoor ranges. Always doubled up at indoor ranges (don't belong to one currently), but if a very loud rifle came in, I took a break, or cut short my session. No need to have those impulses traveling to my ears via my skull. Happened rarely. Was a member so cutting a session short didn't cost me anything.

Maybe on an ultra light build, but on a 7 lb or so AR? Doubt it. Lesson learned. Posted by: man The prong design by Smith Industries taken from the original AR design is probably the best flash hider around but obviously nothing for recoil. The later A1 and A2 birdcage flash hiders had this difference, the A1 birdcage was not timed and it would tend to throw up dirt clouds when shooting prone and if it was dry . The A2 is timed and directs the blast up with where the ports are supposed to be in the down direction gone. So fine for prone shooting but often you have to use barrel shims for the A2 flashider to get it correctly oriented. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:22 PM (E4rtv) 177
Yeah of course YMMV. I just don't particularly care. I work my course of fire in between homeboy two bays over turning $200 of ammo into noise and holes in paper.
If I'm really working on my game I take the time to drive 1.5 hours out to an outdoor range where I can get my very own bay and the nearest gun is ~100 yards to either side. Posted by: ballistic at October 25, 2026 09:23 PM (oqH4h) 178

Posted by: Ed L ======== 7.62x51 in a short barrel is kind of a why do that question but yeah, I can see where the blast and flash would be miserable without a suppressor. A lot of what the military does is kludges to get around the fact that logistics dictates what ammo they can use along with intl law. Fortunately civilians can safely ignore that and pick what is optimal for our own use. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:27 PM (E4rtv) 181

Oh, did mean to tell folks that I took down about 300 rounds of dubious 308 cartridges using the Frankford Arsenal's pile driver. Bullets came out pristine, all of the bullets came out in three pulls of the spring loaded lever, most in two. Greatest time sink was removing the empty cartridge from the carrier and you can see why they make cheap replaceable carriers. This sort of inertial bullet puller is ideally suited for rifle rounds without massive crimps leaving the bullet and the brass pristine for reloading. 300 rounds took about 90 minutes when all is said and done.
But the Piledriver is probably not suited for the 44 Magnums that I have to demob next. Will use a crimp collet bullet puller on that. I prefer Hornady's as easier to use but have used the RCBS with a center spindle to crank down the collet. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:34 PM (E4rtv) 184

Collet bullet pullers on a press and the Pile Driver are both easier on my hands nowadays than the old inertial hammer type bullet puller. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:36 PM (E4rtv) 186

Posted by: rhomboid If you have to take down a lot of rifle or semi auto pistol rounds and need a pristine bullet, the Pile Driver works as a giant inertial bullet puller. Collet bullet pullers can mark a bullet pretty bad on removal and that can seriously affect rifle bullets in particular as they often have thin copper jackets. Not as big of an issue with handgun rounds but can affect feeding for some semi autos if reusing the bullets. And lead bullets are often toast when crimped and trying to remove via a collet or a inertial but the inertial sucks less I guess. Posted by: whig at October 25, 2026 09:42 PM (E4rtv) 194

Planning to go to the range next Saturday weather permitting, but went to the local gunshow last week and purchased an RXM and a Springfield 2020 bolt action 22. Bought the latter since it takes 10/22 mags and has a threaded barrel, which my 10/22 doesn't. Hoping the accuracy is better than some of the online reviews show. If it is, this will be my suppressed groundhog killer. If not, it might become someone else's.
Also loaded up some .38 special today and need to finish the brass prep on my batch of 300 Blackout so I can tumble those clean and load them up for subsonic testing with the suppressors I've bought recently.
