Saturday Substitute Music Thread - October 24, 2026 [TRex]

10242026-baseball.jpg

Looks like we need a music thread for the Hobby Thread afterparty and Club ONT pre-party. As a dinosaur with a small brain and short arms, I can't carry a tune or keep a beat, but I'm impressed but others that can.

Shall we talk tunes?

How about a baseball theme since we're in the midst of the World Series?

"Take me out to the ballgame" from Luke Combs:

"Willie, Mickey, and the Duke" from Terry Cashman:

"Centerfield" by John Fogerty:

"Take me out to the Ballgame" led by Harry Caray at a Cubs game:

"The Cheap Seats" from Alabama:

"Enter Sandman" by Metallica for Mariano Rivera for the last time:

What songs am I missing? Glory Days by Springsteen is a candidate but my fingers somehow won't include a link. Weird.

Usual rules apply. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're a troll, go away. Remember, there's no crying in blogging.

5 At work a guy started singing an N-Sync tune- which stuck them in my head.

I considered killing him, but figured being gay was punishment enough.

Not quite a baseball song but fond memories of the Pirates last WS.

And there goes the 'hint'.

What we sing of von Tilzer's "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" is just the chorus.

Katie Casey was baseball mad,
Had the fever and had it bad.
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev'ry sou
Katie blew.
On a Saturday her young beau
Called to see if she'd like to go
To see a show, but Miss Kate said "No,
I'll tell you what you can do:"

When you have a baseball announcer doing play by play for a minute or so, it's hard to pass up.

26 Harry Caray: Before he defected and became a traitor, when he worked for the White Sox, Jimmy Piersall asked him why the Sox didn't draw for day games the way that Northside team did. Harry's response was, "Jimmy, our fans work."

Phil Rizzuto doing the play-by-play. Story goes they gave him the script and recorded it in a separate session. He had no idea what the song was about. Given that Meatloaf was not very well known at the time, it sort of tracks, and Phil would readily admit to not being too quick on the uptake..

I blame them for taking a perfectly OK little song and turning it into the worse call-and-response cacophony ever. If it had stayed in the stadium, that would be one thing but now it's inescapable.

I remember one neighborhood block party years ago. The DJ was playing that, and at one point he announced "it looks like young [neighbor's 13 yr old son] has just figured out what this song is about!" We, the adults, laughed hysterically.

Yes.
That was the moment, maybe a year ago, that I fully comprehended the depth Springsteen’s douche e ness.
That, and the notion that a Vietnam Nam vet couldn’t get a job in the oil patch in 1970.
