Miley's sense of humor strikes again I think the mystery night chickens are a hoot. And here's a chicken quilt. ![]() ![]() Irish Red & White Setters We have two of these. Misanthropic HumanitarianWhat do you want to bet that Misanthropic Humanitarian's setters are just as spoiled as these? Encountered by Members of The Horde ![]() ![]() This crazy critter showed up on my terrace called a Chinese Mantis. Notice it has different forelegs than a praying mantis. I think because it is a communist. Sharon(willow's apprentice) ![]() Just today moved back into the remodeled house, and got a visit from a mama moose and her twin yearlings. They decided to eat the rest of the crabapples and then went after the raspberry bushes. Very tasty, apparently. Mama jumped the temporary fence but didn't find anything better, so she jumped back. The yearlings were behaving like teenagers and wouldn't leave the raspberries when she told them to, so she came back and chewed them out. tcn in AKInteresting, but destructive! My bathroom spiders haven't done anything interesting lately.
But there are several mantids over the summer that have fallen into my rain catch-buckets. One I heard rustling around and was able to move it out of the bucket. The other I didn't notice until It say it floating around after the storm the other day. I wonder if I should attach escape sticks to the insides of the buckets. To be fair to the moose, I usually whack those raspberry bushed down to the ground in the spring anyway, and they still grow 7 feet tall and produce like mad. The teenage moose were just... helping.

MMEEEEOOOWWWW!!!
(fore in cat) Love the top pic! I was golfing at a fairly rural area a few years ago. All the property surrounding it were farms. I overshot a green and the ball landed near the tree line separating the course from a farm. As I was driving towards the green, I couldn't see the ball. High rough. Thankfully, a kitten pounced on the ball and looked triumphantly at me. Like, 'I Find Ball'!! It then turned around and went back into the tree line. Afternoon, Pet Folken,
No pics of actual Horde pets today? Well, I'm just as guilty of not sending in any snapshots of my two furry thugs. Stirling and Dagny are both about four and a half, born in March 2022 two weeks apart. Dagny has pretty much reached her full growth -- she looks, apart from her noticeable ears, something like a miniature version of the Asian Pallas's Cat Ace posted the video of this past week. And Stirling, whose diet seems to be working (though I can't weigh him), has little cartoon versions of himself in all the stores now. Happens every year about this time. Can't quite figure it out. Regarding the night chickens - one would think they'd be napping in their coop instead of terrorizing the neighbors.

Up here, when you golf, both moose and bears have the right of way on any fairway or green. It is really just common sense. And probably more common than you would think. They just don't care if you are there or not.

This week is the 5th anniversary of the passing of great black Wolf, the long-haired cat I took in back in 2011 after his "humans" (ha!) got evicted and left him behind to roam from door to door for handouts. They didn't bother to see if they could find him a home; just decamped and let him fend for himself. He'd made friends with me earlier, because his people let him out all the time. He was quite pleased to move in with me. Ten pounds at the time, he grew to be fourteen, not fat. I was told one of the maintenance people here refused to go into my apartment, "Not with that big black cat there." Yet he was quite calm about strangers, easygoing, and friendly. He just *looked* fierce.
He lost some weight in August and September of '21, and I didn't notice because I was worrying about his ailing brother Chekov. He'd been listless too, and I was going to bring him to the vet on Sunday. When I got up from my nap on Saturday, he was gone, stretched out on the kitchen floor. When I told the vet later about his symptoms, they guessed kidney failure; it can come on fast. His ashes box reads "Wolf: A Steady Quiet Friendship." Love that chicken quilt!
I can't imagine living nearby where moose are, especially if something that large can easily jump fences, but see that several US states commonly, frequently or even occasionally have them roaming about. Wow! --- Moose are locally extinct (extirpated) as a native breeding population in Pennsylvania, having been hunted out by around 1790. Native moose (historically called "black elk" or "originals" by Native Americans) lived across northern Pennsylvania, the Poconos, and river valleys before being wiped out by European settlers and colonial hunting. Places named like Moosic in Lackawanna County and Moosehead in Luzerne County reflect this history. Posted by: L - No nic... at October 24, 2026 04:06 PM (NFX2v) 29

https://is.gd/ZhgBUX Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at October 24, 2026 *** Looks a great deal like my boyhood cat Rusty. Mom had wanted a cat for years, but our landlord was against it. She waited until we had a new neighbor whom she knew wouldn't squeal on her, then adopted a little red boy tabby from a lady she knew at the laundromat. He took to all of us -- had a different relationship with each of his humans; sat with me as I read, played rough with my brother, sat on Mom's lap, sucked up to my father for extra lunch treats. Quite a smart fellow. He also grew to fourteen lbs., not fat, and lived to be about thirteen. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 24, 2026 04:13 PM (wzUl9) 40

His ashes box reads "Wolf: A Steady Quiet Friendship." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 24, 2026 04:01 PM (wzUl9) My nephew died at 27 in 2021. He had a cat he'd raised since it was a kitten. It died a month later almost to the day as his owner with kidney failure. He crawled up under a deck one day like he was going to go to die, took him to the vet, they did tests and had to put him down. The cat was probably five or six years old and nobody had a clue it had kidney problems, except he had one symptom that nobody was aware was a symptom; he peed a lot. The other odd thing about Rusty: He was afraid of strangers *if* they were older than I was. And he adjusted that over the years as I grew up, so that when I was eighteen, say, he was fine with my contemporaries.
When he was about nine, I brought home the dilute calico Li'l Bit. At first he would have nothing to do with her. Then, after a few days, it was as if he'd realized: "This is a *girl* kitten! Why didn't you tell me?" They became fast friends -- and he became the brave one who sat out when strangers of any age came over, while she would vanish. When he passed, my mother told me, Li'l Bit spent a good part of the day trotting around the apartment and patio, calling for him. . . . I've been pondering what to do for Sammy. When Publius goes out on the front porch to check out the night sky, he often finds Sammy on the porch swing. I think Sammy considers the front porch to be his private hangout, and is miffed when we go out there. Maybe I'll put a warming mat on the swing for him. Freddy the Freeloader, the semi-feral gray tabby-with-white, is still getting dry food in a bowl from me. He acts friendly, but if you try to pet him he ducks away, and Linda says he tries to nip her. I'm not dealing with that.
