Evening, overnighters,
The evening winds down. Tomorrow early I'll exercise. In the evening there is a free concert with national artist Gretchen Wilson and local star Amanda Shaw on the riverfront in a suburban town we often visit. They've been having these free concerts with various artists all month on Sat. nights. Nothing next week 10/31, I believe, but tomorrow night should be cool. Don't forget to do the clock thing on Sat. night next week. I always overlook one of my timepieces -- usually the one in the car. There's the microwave, coffee maker, two bedroom clocks, five watches, and my kitchen wall clock. And the TV, computers, and phone, but they reset themselves. Oh, and the new AM/FM/shortwave radio. Who knows, it might reset itself too. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 23, 2026 10:31 PM (wzUl9) 65

Maybe boobs mean fecundity, but boobs have nothing to do with the sex bits, only the after bits (the post partum ones). So is the main function of boobs to indicate "This is a female, and thus capable of giving birth"? What about guys who don't want kids? Truly a golden age of female broadcast pulchritude. TV and movies have completely lost the plot when it comes to smoking hot babes who also appear to be prime wife material. See also: Florence Henderson in "The Brady Bunch" and Shirley Jones on "The Partridge Family". Even though my actual age demographic was aligned with with Marsha Brady and Laurie Partridge respectively (and sure, they were hot), I was all about the MILFs even then. I think Today's Youth refer to this as the "tradwife" look. If a female character is supposed to be hot today, she's always or almost always skanked out. Speaking of boobs, I have a question.
Posted by: BeckoningChasm Grok knows all: Evolutionary psychologists and biologists have proposed several related explanations for why this became a sexual signal: Fertility and reproductive readiness: Breast development is a clear secondary sexual characteristic driven by estrogen at puberty. It signals that a woman has reached reproductive maturity. Fuller breasts are also associated (imperfectly) with higher body fat reserves, which historically correlated with the ability to support pregnancy and breastfeeding. Honest signal of health and nutritional status: Maintaining permanent breast tissue requires metabolic resources. In ancestral environments, this could have indicated good health and access to food—traits relevant to mate choice. Visual and sexual signaling: Unlike many other cues that are temporary or hidden, breasts are a permanent, highly visible feature. Once bipedalism and reduced body hair made the chest more exposed, selection may have favored traits that served as attention-drawing signals of femaleness and maturity. I actually mostly like having DST, and going back to STD time for the winter months. Works pretty well with my natural schedule. Its hard for me to get up when its pitch black outside so going back to standard time for winter months helps. I've also always lived pretty near the eastern edge of the time zone so DST doesn't mean light at crazy late evening hours in the summer, and having extra light later is helpful for getting stuff done.

From It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Russell Finch: Wait a minute, are you knocking this country? Are you saying something against America? Algernon Hawthorne: Against it? I should be positively astounded to hear of anything that could be said FOR it. Why, the whole bloody place is the most unspeakable matriarchy in the whole history of civilization! Look at yourself, and the way your wife and her strumpet of a mother push you through the hoop! As far as I can see, American men have been totally emasculated. They're like slaves! They die like flies from coronary thrombosis, while their women sit under hairdryers, eating chocolates and arranging for every second Tuesday to be some sort of Mother's Day! And this positively infantile preoccupation with bosoms. In all my time in this wretched, godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this preposterous preoccupation with bosoms. Don't you realize they have become the dominant theme in American culture: in literature, advertising and all fields of entertainment and everything. I'll wager you anything you like: if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse . Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at October 23, 2026 10:56 PM (Cqx++) 125

Well, let's just say the North American time zone map is going to look a bit strange on November 1. British Columbia will be aligned with US Mountain time and an hour ahead of the western states which observe Pacific time. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and western Ontario will be aligned with US central time. So on November 1, when it's 9 a.m. in Seattle, 10 a.m. in Helena and Denver, and 11 a.m. in Minneapolis, it will be 10 a.m. in most of British Columbia and 11 a.m. all the way from near the BC/Alberta border to just west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Yes, and that would be standard time. It's basically astronomical, really, of the definition of mean solar time. Noon means the sun is at transit, and seasonal variation aside, 6AM means "early morning", and 6PM means "near sunset". The Equation of Time adds some variation, and then standard time zones themselves add some more variation, necessary so clocks can be reasonable synchronized in the modern world of fast travel, but I can tolerate that. Jumping another hour on a whim about when you want the sun to set according to clock time vs the standard 8 - 5 work schedule is a bridge too far for me. Yes, there are antlers and manes but the overall body shape is the same. Humans are the exception. I'm just trying to be less stupid. We did go to permanent DST in the early '70s under Nixon (energy crisis and all that). That lasted about a year. When clock time of sunrises was pushing 10AM in the western boundaries of the time zones at higher latitudes (looking at you Michigan and Indiana), that was too much, and they switched back. I predict the same thing will happen again if they do go to permanent DST again. 176 >> Publius, do you have a preference for what would be best?
Yes, and that would be standard time. It's basically astronomical, really, of the definition of mean solar time. Noon means the sun is at transit, and seasonal variation aside, 6AM means "early morning", and 6PM means "near sunset". The Equation of Time adds some variation, and then standard time zones themselves add some more variation, necessary so clocks can be reasonable synchronized in the modern world of fast travel, but I can tolerate that. Jumping another hour on a whim about when you want the sun to set according to clock time vs the standard 8 - 5 work schedule is a bridge too far for me. >> There's a reason we didn't have DST for 400 years.
We didn't have time zones until 1883, much less DST. Time was purely local, and basically local time was local mean (or apparent, actually in many cases) solar time. This wreaked havoc with the railroads. Years earlier there was deadly accidents to clocks being set to different local time zones. A big one killed 14 when one train just slammed into another. Neither thought the other was supposed to be anywhere nearby. And that made the railroads realize they had to use synchronized clocks. Thus, "Railroad Time" was born. When clock time of sunrises was pushing 10AM in the western boundaries of the time zones at higher latitudes (looking at you Michigan and Indiana), that was too much, and they switched back. A sensible placement of the dividing line between the Eastern Time and Central Time zones in Michigan's Upper Peninsula would be to place the three easternmost counties in the Eastern Time zone, as they have the closest connection to the rest of the state. All counties west of that longitudinal dividing line ought to be in the Central Time zone. There's a reason that the Green Bay Packers are the favorite team the further west you travel across the Upper Peninsula. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! And that became a bitch for the railroads to deal with. Internally, they all used their own standard time and kept their clocks in sync. But for the public, they had to convert that to dozens and dozens of local time "zones" all over the country at the major hubs. Basically, local time just smoothly followed longitude. But at a major hub, they'd have to convert their own time to *dozens* of those different times. Such was the power of the railroads they were able to do this with the states alone. The federal govt didn't even do it. It was only later, around 1918 when federal law basically rubber stamped what the railroads had already got the states to do. It was until about that time, call it 1900 really, that our own mechanical clocks became accurate enough to match the Erf's rotation. Up until then, the Erf was the most accurate clock we had. Some very accurate mechanical ones were developed for precision use (see master-slave vacuum pendulum clocks). But then came the atomic clock, which blew away previous accuracy limits, and that became the standard for uniform or "Newtonian time". By the start of 18th century, astronomers and physicists of the day began to suspect the Erf's rotation was not uniform, but varied a little bit. It was Halley who first noticed something in 1695, and then the evidence continued to mount. By the mid-1800s, it was all but confirmed. Definite proof only came in the early 20th, with observations using the most accurate clocks. I think deSitter had something to do with that. Anyway that led to the creation of "ephemeris time", and I won't try to ramble on and on about the details of that. But then came atomic time, which became the standard for the defintion of the SI second. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 23, 2026 11:52 PM (w6EFb) 208

Up until ephemeris time, the second was just defined as 1/86,400th of a mean solar day. But in the '20s when they created ephemeris time, that had to come up with a different definition of the second, since the earth's rotation was variable. They defined as a certain fraction of the sidereal year, which later was changed to the tropical year (complicated reasons). To do so, they tried to make the new second be as close to the old second as possible. At the time, Simon Newcomb's Tables of the Sun, was the Bible of "where the sun be at", which was compiled over decades of observations centered around the mid 1800s. Thus the new second became very close the mean solar second of 1850. And then the atomic time second was defined to be very close to that, and finally here we are with the SI second. So, that basically locked the definition of the SI second down to the earth's synodic rotation rate in 1850. By 1972, when the UTC scheme was put into place, the earth's rotation period was about 86,400.003 SI seconds long. 3 milliseconds slow. So due to the leap second scheme they put it (for long reasons), that meant the eart would get about 1 second behind UTC every 333 days. The max tolerance was set at 0.9s, with 0.6 being the practical limit to allow for any problems. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 24, 2026 12:24 AM (w6EFb) 239

Back then in 1972, the vagaries of high precision uniform time scales vs mean solar time and all that was not of any concern to the general public for civil time, it was only the province of navigators and astronomers. So, there were interests on one side who wanted the UTC time scale to tick uniformly, but interests on the other side who wanted UTC to agree with mean solar time. The leap second scheme with the 0.9/0.6s tolerance was the compromise between those. You'll see that 0.9s thing would correspond to about 1 nautical mile error in celestial navigation calculations for longitude. In the days where setting clocks for the public was mostly "At the tone, the time will be..." with about a minute accuracy, that jumping around occasionally with leap seconds was not a concern. Then came computers.....and it became a big concern for the public through the damned things. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at October 24, 2026 12:33 AM (w6EFb) 253

Omar is such a smug looking piece of shit. Posted by: four seasons =============== The smug is getting wiped off, and it's glorious. Meanwhile, she claims to be the youngest of 7, but that rumored brusband is anywhere between 3 and 5 years younger than her. She's never given journalists a complete rundown of her siblings. It's going to be crazy when it shakes out. We may even be wrong about a few things -- but only because it's worse than we thought. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at October 24, 2026 12:37 AM (mmrXZ) 258

They are all in this. NIST/USNO are all part of the international body that sets this stuff. For all practical purposes, with GPS and all that, the need for UTC to agree with UT1 (the precise definition of the current mean solar time to very high precision) doesn't exist. Nobody really depends on "ballpark" celestial navigation anymore. And if you do need it, UT1 is easily available. Back then, it wasn't. But now, anyone, via the internet can get UT1, TT, TAI, etc, etc easily. >>>California has made my magazine capacity of 15 rounds illegal...but California doesn't know that. Should my ambition be to increase that capacity?
Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) --- Just buy another magazine and practice quick change. I think they call it slam fire today but the original 1911 would lock the slide open on the last round. Operator keeping the trigger depressed, while inserting a new magazine then thumbing the slide release it would fire. Cavalry at arms was usually in a hurry to get down to business. For those keeping track, DH is home from hospital and scooting around with his walker. Mostly from the bar to his chair but nonetheless. They replaced the entire left knee and so far so good. He starts PT on Monday at some hideous hour in the morning. Hopefully by the following week he will be able to drive himself so I can go back to sleeping in like the slug I have become.

_Kamala Harris Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 24, 2026 12:26 AM (2UA/a) I don't have a problem with this statement, generally. Let's sign it differently, for a moment: "Never let someone else's limited ability to see your capacity be a limitation on your ambition." _J.K. Rowling That would fit her circumstances pretty well and would be not-bad general advice. (The "never" is debatable, but we're talking simple truisms.) In hindsight, the way to have done it is separate uniform time/SI/atomic time from the notion of civil time. Computers would run internally on atomic time (which should be Terrestrial Time (TT) -- currently there's a mishmash of TT vs TIA vs GPS time, all ticking at atomic rate, but with different relative offsets to historical crap of epoch set points and all that). NTP would disseminate TT to all systems. All time stamps, file times, event time, etc, etc would be recorded in TT. Now, for what time you display to the user, we'd define a simple civil time scale I'll call UT3. This would simple a smoothed version of mean solar time that simply tracked the secular slowing of the earth's rotation. I was never a 'gamer'-- didn't have time. Life was expensive and I needed to work, cook, eat, care for the house & all that.
Surprises me how much time I spend here, really. I *should* be doing other things but... ugh, need a break! Still, don't have time for gaming. Posted by: JQ at October 24, 2026 01:12 AM (rdVOm) 286
A simple polynomial function, UT3(TT), of no more than 3rd order -- heck quadratic would really be enough -- would be all that was needed. It would be good, at 3rd order, for decades at the worst, and maybe 100 years at best.
So, the time of day, and the display time for any internal file time stamps would be displayed to the user as UT3, adjusted to the local time zone. This is the same as it is now. Internally, it runs on UTC, and just displays local time. UT3 would be exactly the same. Now, computers would be tracking true uniform time, all differences and all that would be in those units, and the "label" displayed to the user would be adjusted to agree with mean solar time to within a few minutes at worst. To do this now, however, would be an enormous retrofit. Something like this has been proposed and might one day be the way things work, but not for legacy equipment.
