RIP Tom Skerritt

HVQpzuyXsAADxvq.jpg

Tom Skerritt, Star of ‘Picket Fences’ and ‘Alien,’ Dies at 93

Tom Skerritt, the rough-hewn actor who sparkled amid ensembles in M*A*S*H, Alien and Top Gun before starring as small-town sheriff Jimmy Brock on the quirky 1990s series Picket Fences, has died. He was 93.

Skerritt died Wednesday in Seattle of natural causes, his family announced.

“We are heartbroken by his loss,” they said. “While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives. He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping others find and share their own voices.”

Hope for the yutes??

From Christian Heiens

You need to understand how Right-wing people under 40 view the Left.

When we think of Leftists, we do not think of Barack Obama or Ezra Klein. Yes, these guys are on the Left, but younger Millennials and Zoomers on the Right do not think of Leftists in their own age bracket as polished technocrats.

***

We think of Discord troons that invaded our hobbies, Reddit mods who are drunk on the most insignificant power imaginable, that one girl from high school or college who became a literal Communist, and that friend or family member who cut off all contact because we refused to treat their mental illness like a status symbol.

***

They know what is to come if their own generational cohorts on the Left actually take power, and they feel incredibly exasperated that it seems like none of their parents or grandparents understand just how late the hour truly is.

Great comment section on that post.

Insert Nelson Muntz laugh here

Minneapolis restaurant that offered free meals to protest ICE raids announces closure

Modern Times Café, a Minneapolis restaurant that attempted to eliminate prices, has announced it will be closing for good by the end of the year.

“For the last six years, I’ve been trying to prove that Modern Times can continue to exist,” owner Dylan Alverson wrote on social media Saturday. “I’ve exhausted every option without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is.”

***

Alverson announced on Instagram in January that his business, which rebranded as Post Modern Times, would operate as a “free and donation-based restaurant” where everyone would be welcome “except ICE” in protest of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations happening in his state, partly in response to the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

OK fine, I'll actually give you the Nelson laugh

Trump understands how to get things done. Here's another example - give people a financial incentive to support data centers in their area.

Trump says companies should pay 'dividend' to communities to make data centers popular

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that companies building data centers should pay a "dividend" to the communities ‌where they are sited if they want to make the developments popular.

"I have watched the process closely, and data centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck," Trump said in a Truth Social post.

***

The Trump administration, which has prioritized rapid AI development to compete with China, has also noted the shifting voter sentiment.

"New and large, in some cases gigantic, Data (centers) are mandated by me to make their own electricity, and give ‌or sell any excess back to the local community, or grid," Trump said in his post.

Trump said in February that major technology companies must build their own power plants, opens new tab for their data centers in order to protect consumers from rising bills.

AI giant Anthropic and Elon Musk have laid out blueprints in recent days for sharing some of the spoils of the AI boom.

Another fun one from Terrible Maps

Each state's most overrated thing

HVG_EYna8AEIoN_.jpg

Old Bay overrated?!? That cuts me deep!

A few others I can't agree with:
Green chile in New Mexico is awesome!
Gulf Shores, Alabama and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - overrated?? Nonsense!

Much to the disappointment of my proud Masshole significant other, I agree with Dunkin' being overrated - at least for their donuts and other "food" offerings. I will, however, take their coffee 10 out of 10 times over Starbucks.

What say you about the "map of overratedness"?

45 Yeah, there's a bunch with which I cannot agree. Let's face it, if you have been to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, you were impressed and both states would be hard-pressed to show you something more incredible.

New York, I'm going to say Coney Island Hot Dogs are WAY over-rated. PA Cheesesteaks are over-rated because most here in PA wish we didn't have to include Philly as part of the state. NH...never heard of coffee milk, and I lived there for a number of years. California....I'd say the whole damn state is now over-rated, and it didn't have to be that way. Alaska...never went on a cruise up there...but I have to tell you, a luxury train crossing of that state isn't to be missed and cannot be overrated.

Tomorrow I get to teach kindergarteners.

Attempting to fix the stove resulted in stove: 1, me: 0. Or perhaps -1. The glass top of the stove box is... absurdly difficult to de-glue, to the point that I gave up, put things back together, and will make do with just 1 large and 2 small until I can afford otherwise. Ben and Jerry's always made me laugh. Let me ask you a simple question. When you purchase a food product you are looking for something you enjoy eating, BUT you are also looking for assurances that your food product is safe, fresh and guaranteed not to be a safety risk....correct?

Well, the Double Fudge Brownie Ice Cream Ben and Jerry's used to sell had a tiny little printing on it that you'd miss if you were looking for it. The brownies were provided by the special education classes of the local Burlington School District. Now, before you smack me around for assuming that there is a safety risk attached to that...just now that I personally, have a retarded relative who likes to cook GI-Joe action figures into his personally made Mac and Cheese. 112 CT Election Update

Less than two weeks left, and I'm blanketing the three towns in my district with signs that quote my opponent as saying (on an open mic) "Tax My People, They Won't Even Notice." Getting signs taken down by the Dems all over the place, but my signs are still being put up.

I was on a CT radio show last week, and I've gotten surprisingly good coverage from the local newspapers, even though I'm a Republican.

Down to my last few thousand dollars (man, political money gets spent quickly come Election Time!), but I still think that I've got a pretty good chance. Lots of 13+ hour days, and I'm campaigning this weekend at some Trunk or Treats and Marathons in the district, but I'm hanging in there. Politicking is tough - I can actually believe that Talarico might have wanted to check himself in someplace for a mental health break. And I'm only running for a small potatoes seat in Hartford.

I should go onto the Prayer Thread for some heavenly assistance on Election Day.

142 Just finished watching a fine Warners film from 1950: Caged, a solid B & W noir in which a 19-year-old girl (Eleanor Parker) finds herself in a women's prison for being an accessory to armed robbery. Riveting, filled with well-etched characters, the film garnered Oscar nominations for Parker, Hope Emerson (who plays the menacing matron*), and the screenwriters. It didn't win; that was the year of All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard. But it is vivid, beautifully cast, and well-paced.

Recommended.

* Emerson's matron is sort of an ancestor to Nurse Ratched in Cuckoos' Nest. I wonder if Ken Kesey saw this film before writing that novel.

152 RANDOM DAVE ... Have you registered with any temp agencies? ... Companies who use temp agencies are not always looking for temporary employees ... Rather, they're using them to "find" permanent employees instead of burdening their internal H.R. department with the process ... Companies provide job descriptions and pay rates to the temp agencies ... Then the temp agencies try to match job-seekers to the open positions ... Qualified job-seekers are offered PAID temporary assignments -- typically on a week-to-week basis -- which gives the company an opportunity to assess the skills of the job-seeker without obligation ... And if the job-seeker turns out to be good fit, then the company makes an offer for permanent employment ... It's a win-win-win for everyone, especially the temp agency, which gets paid a weekly fee for the temp work as well as a lump sum for a permanent hire.
