Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - October 20, 2026

Howdy Hordelings! The Tuesday ONT has arrived. On time, as always. Open thread, as always. Ready to be whelmed?

ONT funnies

This seems like a clever idea to me.

A married couple in San Diego wanted to get dressed up and go to a wedding. Problem was, they’d reached the age where nobody they knew was getting married anymore.

So they built a website where you can buy tickets to strangers’ weddings.

And the economics actually make sense.

The couple getting married has already committed to a venue minimum. Someone cancels. Now there’s an empty chair and a dinner they’re paying for either way.

Meanwhile, another couple would happily pay to eat, dance, have some cake and watch a best man make a series of increasingly questionable decisions with a microphone.

***

Apparently one bride said the paying strangers brought so much energy to the dance floor that she wished she’d invited more.

Of course they did. Those people specifically bought tickets to be there. Half your actual guests are attending under a treaty negotiated between their mothers.

***

This guy just wanted to take his wife dancing and accidentally identified a liquidity problem in the wedding market.

Check out the whole thing.

What do you think - good idea or nah?

The Brewers made it to the World Series. Fans who bought a "Timeless Ticket" a decade ago want to cash in. Trouble abounds!

Brewers promised a ticket to any future game for $1,000. Some fans unhappy with World Series seats

The Milwaukee Brewers ran a promotion over a decade ago offering fans a “Timeless Ticket” granting them admission to any game in the future if they paid $1,000.

Now that the Brewers are in the World Series for the first time since 1982, fans who took that deal are eager to redeem those tickets they bought in 2015. That has led to some complications.

Brewers president of business operations Rick Schlesinger said Tuesday that several hundred fans had indicated they wanted to redeem their Timeless Tickets for a World Series game. Schlesinger acknowledged that “we subsequently erred in our internal communications on the logistics of fulfilling the requests.”

“While we were able to accommodate all with seats, we received feedback from some that they were unhappy with their seat locations,” Schlesinger said. “Clearly, even with extraordinary limitations on available seats, we did not live up to the spirit of the program, and we have been working through a resolution.”

***

The Brewers are trying to make amends.

Schlesinger said any Timeless Ticket holder who applied for World Series tickets before the deadline will now get to keep those World Series tickets while also being able to retain their Timeless Ticket to redeem for another game in any future season.

“We regret our mistake and look forward to welcoming them to American Family Field for their World Series experience,” Schlesinger said.

***

I imagine 2026 World Series tickets in Milwaukee cost a lot more than these did in 1982

Old school car stereo equipment was awesome. Pioneer is bringing it back!

Old-School Box Speakers Are Back—and Pioneer’s New ‘Cassette Deck’ Car Stereo Is Finally Coming to America

Pioneer is aptly calling this equipment its Heritage Collection. Here’s the logline: “The new collection pairs a head unit and speakers to bring its iconic sound to the cabin of vintage cars that defined a generation in the ’80s and ’90s. The collection reimagines the styling that marked those eras for modern-day drivers, including conveniences like Bluetooth, HD Radio, and SiriusXM readiness, while delivering the rich, detailed sound that has established Pioneer as a favorite among car audio enthusiasts.”

DJ Doof - This Date in Music History Edition

1977 - Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd boarded a chartered plane after playing a concert at Greenville Memorial Auditorium. The band was headed to Baton Rouge for a concert the following night, but the plane ran out of fuel and the pilots attempted an emergency landing that, tragically, failed. Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines were killed in the crash, as were backing singer Cassie Gaines (Steve’s older sister), and the band’s assistant road manager, Dean Kilpatrick.

1976 - the Led Zeppelin concert documentary, The Song Remains The Same, premiered in New York City. Filming took place during the summer of 1973, capturing three nights of shows at Madison Square Garden.

Born on this date in 1950 - Tom Petty, American singer and songwriter. He was the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was a founding member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch.

I think it's great. I love weddings, even if I don't know the people very well (e.g. children of former workmates), and would be happy to attend more. As long as the price is reasonable, I'd be happy to drink wine, eat cake and cheer at ever lull in the conversation.

They sure as shit beat funerals, which are becoming one of my primary social outlets at this stage of my life.

Several tags with recruiters today, hopefully some of it comes to fruition. My first day subbing tomorrow, I have my lunch packed, it's time to shower and get ready for bed.

Took a look at the underside of the stovetop. Thursday I might open it up and look at the actual burner, see if I can see an easy fix or what. If necessary, it looks like I can get a replacement burner on Amazon for 40 bucks-ish...

What do you think - good idea or nah?

An idea of Biblical proportions!

The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.

[...]

Then he said to his servants, "The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find."

The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests.

Compare one of the requirements for receiving a doctorate at the medieval University of Paris (I think... one of the ancient universities) -- you had to give a course of lectures on your subject. That seems like a fairly reasonable requirement. However, you needed a quorum of attendees in order for it to count. Some doctoral candidates offered free booze and food, while others just sent their buddies out in the street to threaten to beat the shit out of anyone who didn't come listen to the lecture.

71 The Earth Picture is AI, unless there's somewhere on the planet where water runs uphill.

Go to stranger's weddings? Confession: In my misspent youth, I (with buddies) occasionally crashed wedding receptions where I knew neither bride nor groom. Why? Simple, free booze. We never caused any problems other than consuming liquor that may have run out 10 minutes earlier than otherwise. Stuck around no more than an hour, schmoozed a bit, and quietly slipped away, a couple of drinks ahead for the evening.

Posted by: buddhaha at October 20, 2026 10:26 PM (z4VKm)

72 The "pay to be a wedding guest" could get out of hand. Or you could make a funny comedy movie based on the premise. Eddy and Elaine decide to go to a stranger's wedding for shits and giggles, and it turns out the bride and groom are their respective exes. Hilarity ensues.

82 Brewers promised a ticket to any future game for $1,000. Some fans unhappy with World Series seats

____________________________

Short of "Hot College Girl Topless Night", I don't think you can justify a $1,000 seat at a Brewers game. But, if I really wanted to stick it to them for putting me up in the cheap seats after giving them $1,000 a decade ago so they could invest that money and make more....I'd keep my eyes open for who attends the game.

If there is one celebrity there....one single celebrity sitting in the VIP section...I'm off to an attorney the following morning for a refund with 10 year's worth of interest on a grand.

89 The wedding thing would not be a thing for me. 1. Food at a wedding is a big gamble. It’s not even close to a given it will be good. 2. Same with the cake 3. I say all this and I have 2 separate hysterical stories about weddings (one where I was in the MX embassy and not the wedding venue, another where I accidentally crashed a mafia wedding in Italy), so maybe it could be fun?

90 The wedding idea is fine. The Irish have had old lady professional mourners attend funerals to drive up the numbers and my ancestors in Norway had old widows and old maids that checked obits and attended funerals and the lunch afterward. The food is paid for, there's always too much, and the ladies got a free meal and got out to a social event. Wedding's the same and usually a happier occasion.

For your funeral, set aside some money to hire an actress and a limo. A beautiful woman, all dressed in black, gets out of the limo and stands, motionless, some distance away from the graveside. Everyone sees her- but she speaks to no one.

As the casket is lowered into the grave, she returns to the limo and is gone.

119 Thank you, Doof, for the ONT and Skynyrd's memory.

Before most of you were born I fell in love with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sadly I never went to a concert to see them as they were either in MS and I was out West in college or vice versa. One of my favorite bands to this day.

Their plane crashed 100mi south of Jackson, MS. Were taken to trauma hospitals in the city. My mother was a volunteer in one hospital, and met some of the survivors and families and said they were lovely people. I am positive she'd never heard of the band before this happened.

I love nearly every song they sang.

And, dang it, I wish they'd bought a new plane. Aerosmith rejected it.

That Smell was written in anger at bandmate Rossington's car crash into an oak tree, drunk and high on 'ludes.

It was said Ronnie wrote lyrics very fast and add to a guitar riff. He composed and memorized lyrics and remembered them for certain songs as his band practiced. Very tight and talented band who practiced and worked hard to perfect their sound.

Headlining Rolling Stone in the UK, Ronnie ticked Mick off by bringing his guitarists onto The Tongue. Ha!

One of my favorites:

122 Just finished a 1962 B & W British mystery/police procedural called Jigsaw. It was based on an American novel by Hilary (not Evelyn) Waugh, who wrote a lot of police procedurals around the same time as Ed McBain was getting started. This one was transplanted to Brighton in the UK. Very sharply done, not a wasted scene or bit of dialog, some dry humor, and it features that rare bird in mystery films: a *well-concealed* murderer whom a smart viewer can spot before the revelation scene.

See, this is where I think there's a better market. Weddings, for the most part are a happy occasion where the bride and groom usually are well liked. That tends to pack them in.

FUNERALS, on the other hand, are usually held on a weekday so it's going to cost you a PTO day to say "adios" to a person who may very well have been a complete ass. And, to be frank, a funeral is a score card. Lots of attendees...well, you must have been an alright guy, and no one saw your browser history.

If you only draw a couple stragglers, chances are you didn't win any congeniality awards while alive. And, it's a direct reflection on you.

That's where the niche market lies. Inflating the numbers to slip that last deceitful scam on the masses. Oh, he must hove been a good guy. Look at all the people....I wonder why they are all over 85 and have an escort with Happy Acres Retirement printed on his shirt?

129 Not much point of having a good tuner in a car stereo anymore; there's a dearth of music suitable for us 29 year-olds. Maybe you have an NPR station with some classical on, at some odd hour, but the "classic rock" outlets are all playing 80's and 90's shite now.

I have been buying those cheap-ass "Dual" (orphan brand from Chy-nah) head units from WalMart at about 29 dollars a pop. They have a decent tuner, 4 channels claiming 25 watts per channel, and can sync up with your phone via Bluetooth. Also have a USB port, so you can bung in a thumb drive loaded with music of your own choice. I have had two of them die mysteriously, but at 29 dollars, it's not worth the effort to either buy or try to collect on the warranty. Throw it away, and plug in another. Similar, if not identical, devices can be found under several "brand" names on the 'Zon, too.

The funeral of a great-uncle I would have liked to attended: He was a train conductor and apparently had a girl at every stop. Three girls with engagement rings met over his coffin. I'm sure there was a brief respite of grief at that time.

Handsome man as I've seen a photo and that of his father. They gave me my eyes (gr. Granddaddy was a bigamist my mother found later on Ancestry...when Daddy thought his grandmother was a widow vs kicking his sorry self out). Got a new family in LA.

Gr. Grandmother Maggie found a note from a woman in his suit pocket and threw all of his clothing and stuff onto the front lawn for everyone to see, and left him with her kids. She died a few years before I arrived and am proud of her.

I have a sizeable collection of cassettes and cd's that I can't play in my 21st century car stereo. I don't want a Pioneer head unit that "looks" retro. I want the Pioneer head unit that I had in my Chrysler Laser Turbo in 1985 with an actual cassette player.

What the hell good is a door that looks like a cassette slot? Oh look, there are USB ports behind there. Can I plug a separate CD player in one and a cassette deck in another? No? Then what the boffing hell are these USB ports going to do for me that the other half dozen unused USB ports in my car aren't?

I was -- but it was my night off!!! I was listening to another, country station and heard the DJ mention that he would have "more music from the late Elvis Presley" just as he went into the network news. I thought, Oh, you meant Jim Reeves. But the top news item was exactly that.

Bing Crosby also died that summer, and I dug up some of his old records and played them -- including, of course, "White Christmas."

152 Family lore had it that my one great-grandfather had a second family in Colorado, where he went to seek work during the Depression, spending several years there.

Sure enough, when I did my DNA a few years back, there are DNA relatives I've never heard of in Colorado.

I've never quite mustered the courage to contact them.

I fully expect to find a bunch of relatives in the Philippines as soon as the DNA service covers that area. That grandfather burned through six wives in CONUS. I can only imagine his behavior in the WWII PI.

153 136 RE the wedding thing - we got married in the French Quarter in New Orleans, having rented out our favorite bar for the night. Some random tourist couple just so happened to wander in looking for directions to something else, and (after we announced to them they'd just been kidnapped) they ended up being one of the best parts of the reception. 20 years later, we're still friends.

Love it! NOLA is where we went on our honeymoon. My Long Island guy was blown away with Bourbon St. and it was normal for me.

It didn't help that it was St. Patrick's Day & a parade when we arrived to French Quarter. We accidently got married on one of the drunkest days of the year as it was the Saturday of his spring break at the university.

Ten years later we decided to have our anniversary dinners on another night after a guy spilled his Guiness down my pale green linen suit at a street party. The Irish Pub we walked to, after a French dinner (I know!) threw beads like Mardi Gras from the roof. I was reaching for a necklace at the same time as the beer guy. It did wash out but that was it for us celebrating on that day with crazy people

I suspect what Pioneer is trying vainly to overcome is (a) the lack of people who care about physical media, and (b) the lack of standardized spaces on cars to install aftermarket stereos.

For many years, there was a DIN standard for car stereos. They were all the same width. 1 DIN was the standard height, but there were also 1.5 DIN and 2 DIN models. The DIN standard probably had a maximum depth, and also a standard pinout, but I am not certain about that. The little Dual head unit I mentioned upthread is a 1 DIN unit, but it is only about 2 inches deep, and weighs a scant few ounces.

DIN is "Deutsch Institut fur something or other".

Knew about that one as my late BIL and his wife (UofRI) used to go yearly. He died at 33yrs of a rare heart disease when we were 31...he died running and training for the Boston Marathon.

His wife is from RI (he was born in RI like my dude). She didn't like my redneck self much from the start. I don't really know why, but whatever. He liked to party and have fun, so we got along great. She often had migraines and didn't like parties. They had two little boys like we did at the time.

I supported her as best as I could from FL for two years til she remarried. For reasons unknown 11yrs ago she ghosted me once we moved West. She thought I was getting to close to our MIL and was oddly jealous...which couldn't be further from the truth. After MIL died she emailed his siblings that she was cutting ties and adios!

We should drop in on them en route to Nantucket! She'd flip out!

It would take a rather..... large woman to have had two pregnancies without the world knowing. Secret bastard children work better for a dead dude.

That was the opening scene of the Usagi Drop manga/anime. Single 30-year-old dude shows up for grandpa's funeral. Grandpa's 6-year-old illegitimate daughter is there. Nobody else in the high-society family wanted to admit their patriarch was a horndog with a mistress or three, so they wanted to just put her up for adoption. Single 30-year-old dude says "forget that" and takes in his 6-year-old aunt.

The anime, and the first part of the manga, is a d'awwww cute story about a guy learning to dad.

The second part of the manga will not be mentioned, other than to bring up the "Japan, nuked too much or not enough?" question.

221 How is everyone. I'm watching "Let's Hope It's a Girl" and like most Italian films, you don't have to care if you miss the subtitles.

Happy Wednesday to you all.

That title hits a lot differently in 2026 than it did in 1986.

224 "Let's Hope It's a Girl" is the new hetero man's prayer, as he heads out to meet his new date.

226 180 I don't understand people taking pictures of a dead person in the casket.

I have seen that happen twice.

You ever see the Shay Bradley funeral video? The guy knew his days were numbered, so he had a little surprise arranged by some friends at the burial. It's a classic.

The Victorians had a strange liking for posing with recently-deceased relatives in a familial setting, like sitting on a couch or a chair. Because the cameras of the day required seconds for an exposure, all of the parties in the image had to hold still until the photographer placed the lens cover back on the lens. That makes it difficult to identify the departed from the living.

227 They were all the same width. 1 DIN was the standard height, but there were also 1.5 DIN and 2 DIN models.

Yup. Mine is a 2-DIN. But I rent several cars a year now on trips, and I haven’t seen anything that looks like a standard size for years.

229 Why do all these Triggered leftist go to see Ben or any Comedy show?

I'm not actually sure what she did or said...that parts not in the video...

230 What do you think - good idea or nah?

Good idea, as long as you don't have people triggered by the wedding ceremony, like with some comedians and their audience...

231 I always thought it would be fun to crash big family reunions that are held in public parks. Does anyone know what their long lost second cousins look like?

Of course, passing my pasty self off as second cousin to Jonquarius or Kwan Lee might prove a bit difficult.

234 Maybe stop believing the polls and go vote.

Did that today. Felt good. I know some folks don't like the early voting thing, but without another 100 or so polling places, election day lines would be hours long and people would say "I don't have time for this."

While the unemployed parasites would say "I'm being paid to wreck the country. I can do this all day...at multiple sites, too."
