Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Art Thread![]() René François Ghislain Magritte Surrealism is a particularly obnoxious art movement, in part because some of its adherents have only the barest artistic skill, and partly because surrealism is an excuse to take the mundane and inject in it ridiculous extremes of thought. Sometimes a cigar really is just a cigar! Thankfully Magritte had artistic skill...the dude could paint! And his subjects are often clever and interesting rather than just chosen to hide lack of technical skill. But the other part? Yes, the subject is interesting and clever, but it is a stretch to suggest that it speaks to the human condition. It may very well speak to Magritte's condition, but to universalize it is pompous and arrogant. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

He coasted for the rest of the room, but that was never the focus. Instead of looking out through a window, we'll look at a painting of a view through a window. Instead of looking at a painting of a view through a window, we'll look at a painting of a painting of a view through a window positioned directly in lieu of the same view through the same window. La condition humaine, 1933
René Magritte, Artist, Belgian, 1898 - 1967 National Gallery of Art, discussed this painting. In part, Two of Magritte's favored themes were the "window painting" and the "painting within a painting." The Human Condition is one of Magritte's earliest treatments of either subject, and in it he combines the two, making what may be his most subtle and profound statement of their shared meaning." Ending with, "Both are part of the same painting, the same artistic fabrication. It is perhaps to this repeating cycle, in which the viewer, even against his will, sees the one as real and the other as representation, that Magritte's title makes reference." Also published in 1933, La Condition humaine (Man's Fate) is a 1933 French novel by André Malraux that won the Prix Goncourt. It's about the "failed communist insurrection and resultant massacre in Shanghai in 1927, and the existential quandaries facing a diverse group of people associated with the revolution. Along with Les Conquérants (1928 – "The Conquerors") and La Voie Royale (1930 – "The Royal Way"), it forms a trilogy on revolution in Asia." (Wikipedia) Interesting lessons. The super woke murder mystery series on Prime This Is Not a Murder Mystery is set at a coming out party for future surrealist stars including today's featured artist Magritte as well as Dali, Man Ray, Lee Miller, Max Ernest et al. Indeed the title is inspired by one of Magritte's paintings entitled This Is Not a Pipe. The woke is so over the top woke I can't tell if it's supposed to be drama or satire. In addition, the Dali character chews the scenery like nobody's business and the chief detective is played by Stephen Tompkinson who is often considered a comedic actor (and is one of the few actors I recognize). I've decided to consider it a comedy/ satire and enjoy watching it.

Dali was an instinctive marketer, and an utterly shameless self-promoter. He was also an excellent artist.
Both can be true at the same time. For a hundred years now, most artists are no talent hacks who got good at being hucksters. Hacksters, I'll call them. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 23, 2026 10:22 AM (BI5O2) 109

During the post-WWII era, Dalí entered an artistic period he dubbed Nuclear Mysticism. This phase beautifully blended his renewed fascination with Catholic iconography—such as the Eucharist and the Crucifixion—with modern breakthroughs in nuclear physics and quantum mechanics.
Art historians and peers frequently debate whether Dalí’s dramatic shift from revolutionary communism to devout Catholic monarchism was born out of genuine spiritual conviction, or if it was a calculated, opportunistic move to secure safety, financial prosperity, and state protection under the Franco regime. --- He was a phallic obsessed nut, imho, but I know nothing about fine art. My company is a shit show in many ways. One thing I do appreciate though is politics is never discussed. I suspect most people at the company are lefties but I’ve never personally heard or read anything related to it in my tenure.

OT, just planted and watered some grass seed where I had ripped up some lawn doing fence repairs.
In late October, 52 degrees out there. Good luck with that, but it might work. And the mice would have got the seed in the shed over the winter anyway, they always do Posted by: From about That Time at October 23, 2026 10:58 AM (sl73Y) 208

What worse is, in one of my offices (I'm a floating tech), I'm the only White guy in the place. The workers have this "black" radio station playing all day. Not R & B, but hardcore rap ("Her shit on my dick" is in heavy rotation). The DJ's often go into unhinged anti-Trump rant. And so on. I'm considering filing a complaint with the woke, DEI HR dept, lol.
