She says this is the transition between "golden hour"
-- the much-prized hour when the sun is low in the sky --
and "blue hour" -- the brief period of twilight

Baby pygmy hippo is a cutie.

Elephants are majestic and beautiful until they decide, out of nowhere, that they have beef with you, and then they get scary.

Is it possible to have too many dogs in your pickup truck? This guy dances right on the line.

A great horned owl got stuck in a soccer goal's net, because soccer is stupid and kills beautiful animals. These nice people extract him.

Rescuing an orphaned tiny baby rabbit, and the -- sniff -- setting him free when he's grown.

A Halloween dog parade in New York. I don't think this year's dog costumers are bringing their best, but still, you get to see some dogs.

Elephant plays crossing guard for a herd of water buffalo crossing a river.

A.B.H. Always Be Herding. Always Be Herding.

Turtle Rescue Squad is summoned to save another turtle stuck in a grate.

Tourists come across an orang-utan using the same path they're on, and the big lug just passes peacefully.

This orang-utan subscribes to nurse ratched's newsletter. It agrees with her about pernicious river otters.

This one too.

The big finale of Romeo and Juliet, featuring the deaths of the lovers, was being staged and a cat thought, you know what this Shakespeare fag is missing? Me, that's what.

And he was right.

Oh, for sure Anna!! A lot of their problems could be solved by just not being stupid. Like thinking they can suddenly breathe the air. And splitting up.

One of the fun points of the game "Subnautica" is that the second you land on the planet, everything including the air and water poisons you. You have to get a mutation from a native plant/creature thing just to survive.

And there's a body replicator machine that replicates you if you die. The lore, once you get farther into playing the game, is absolutely horrific. An earlier group of explorers in the game SPOILER ALERT had to make copies of themselves to eat because they ran out of food and the animals there were poison.

Another fascinating discovery about white dwarfs coming out of the exoplanet research. They've confirmed a "2nd generation" planet, a big ol' Jupiter mass gas giant, around a white dwarf. This formed after the star died from the planetary disc expelled as the star went red giant and blew away most of the material (this will be our sun's fate in some time over 5 billion years from now.

So, planets can form after a star dies. And surprisingly some theorizing has white dwarfs have a habitable zone for any little rocky planet that might form close in.

You'd think it would be impossible. The orbit would be very close, orbital period measure in hours. And it would be tidally locked, but at a few hours period, the rotation rate would be the same, and that would be fast enough to stir up the atmospher nicely and keep heat distributed.

There was an SF story where that was the means of star travel. You'd go to a booth and a copy was sent FTL and arrive, while you'd go home. The destination in the story was a ship constructed to study a strange object in space and the people were all going to die out there after the flyby.

52 >> So is the light we see from stars also subject to space time dilation?

There is a Doppler effect for moving stars (and this can be used to determine velocities of nearby stars, if you know the class of star and what it should be emitting in the rest frame). Special relativity modifies it beyond the classical Doppler relation.

Now, at cosmological scales, the expansion redshifts the light greatly itself. The wavelength is stretched out as it travels through space. And there is gravitational red (and blue) shift as well.

53 Years ago was lucky to stay at a rainforest research center for a few days, in Borneo. It was great. Simple dorm-like room (fairly cheap), lived and ate with all the scientists there doing their projects.

I remember there was a Thai woman who was an orangutan specialist. She had habituated one particular orangutan sufficiently that the critter would ignore her when the primate was visiting her favorite durian tree (the scientist staked out this tree). As I recall she was lucky to see the orangutan a few times, in a few months. Amazing patience.

The ant guy had a lot more action. Went out with him one night on his rounds. OMG. The huge ant colonies (with huge ants). The deafening cacophony of the rainforest at sunset was something else.

56 On a game drive I did in South Africa we came upon a small group of elephants. It was one male and three females. That's when the ranger driving the rig told up about musth.

It's a periodic thing male elephants go through. Basically a rise in their hormones which causes them to horny. And aggressive.

And just as he finished explaining the condition the male started flapping ears, using his trunk to through dirt in the air and then charged us. When a big bull elephant starts charging at you it gets your attention.

57 Love the color of twilight!

Elephants I will always love. This big boy decided these men irritated him vastly. He either picked up faggotry fumes, or the one tapping his finger sent him over the edge. It's possible his dinner was late. Regardless, I have this same feeling at times.

Not an orangutan but a baboon sends our Girlie #1 into hysterics. The word at first, as I said she was acting like a baboon (we have the same uninhibited laugh). I showed her a photo online and she immediately noticed their their behinds. There's a baboon song my dude played in the car mentioning their colorful buttocks. We are weird and wear it with pride.

Loved the kitty onstage with Romeo!

My father's black cat used to scare his sitters for years. Who knew a black cat is as good as a watchdog? One visiting nurse would call ahead to see if he was outside before she came in. Granted, he'd hide in the dark hall or stairwell and jump on people and run off as they screamed...you didn't see him til you did.
