How my day went:
Found a good swath of jobs to apply to. Had a screening call with a recruiter. Halfway through cooking supper, the stove burner stopped burning. Had to switch to the other one that size. Hopefully I'll be able to repair it/it will be a simple part replacement... did not need this right now. (Don't need it any time, but especially now). Most of the time I'll be able to get by with just the one large burner, until I can troubleshoot and get under there sufficiently. Posted by: RandomDave at October 19, 2026 10:04 PM (aJQbY) 8

about last May I had a broken branch on a plum tree, so I picked a bunch of the green plums off the branch and tried curing them in brine, like green olives.
I changed the brine every two weeks about three times, and then let them sit in brine in the fridge. I had one today, and it is sort of like a green olive, if you had an olive that was sort of crisp and crunchy and not olive-textured. Also, West High has a huge painting of their mascot, an eagle, on the side of their auditorium. For their homecoming, several, and I mean a lot, of us made instant mashed potatoes and left a huge pile of them under it. But again, "nobody" knew how it got there. And of course, after the '64 quake when some of West High collapsed, our chant was "East is best 'cause there ain't no West." We weren't known for our empathy on that point. Or a photo of him being a pedo. I never liked him and photos showed him in Dallas and he never admitted it. A deep dive (when I was bored years ago) showed a typed msg signed by him mentioning some crap about JFK's murder. Signed as a Texas rancher. Too long ago to remember where I saw this. I saw the funeral live. It seemed to me Jeb and Laura were glaring at Trump in shock. Opened mouth shock. The timing was perfect. GWB did not look at the note, like he knew somehow. Whatever it said was damning. Jeb and Laura did not try to hide their shock and horror. GWB faced forward and tried not to flinch, but his anger showed. Hilary barely reacted. I have fond memories of watching the Pink Panther movies with my father and brother.
My father was a big dude, yet he would start snickering and tearing up before the next bit had even started in the shows. When the gag was actually playing out, he would be laughing so hard we couldn't even hear the dialogue. This was during "live" TV, so we couldn't even rewind. It took multiple viewings over the years for me to get all of the punch lines. Of course, that was part of the charm of watching with our father. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 19, 2026 10:52 PM (k5CNB) The difference between plane surveying and spherical surveying is very evident, and becomes moreso the closer you get to the poles. North-South roads periodically have a jog in them, called a "correction line", resulting from a shift of section lines as you go north, and there can be fewer miles between meridians. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 19, 2026 10:52 PM (k5CNB) No, what I mean is that the tools will have the same curvature as the land being surveyed, both will have a curvature, and as 2 dimensional beings they are in the same plane, curved. Euclidean geometry requires parallel lines and 180 degree sum triangles, but a non-Euclidean being on a curvature has larger angles for the vertices of a regular triangle, however the surveying tools also would have that greater angle since they are in the same plane. I think it would have been more obvious in a square, since parallel lines are not actually parallel and the bowing of the parallel lines would become obvious in large enough distances, as a sphere requires the lines to either not be straight and still be the same distance apart at all points, or be different lengths to maintain 90 degree corners. >> How would they identify that, wouldn't their measuring equipment be subject to the same curvature as the land it was surveying, and show 60 degrees as well?
An angle is basically local. And "straight lines" on a curved (intrinsically) curved surface are geodesics, as straight as you can go on a curved surface. The symmetry of a sphere is just about perfect, divine even, and the geodesics of spheres are great circles. So a "triangle" on a sphere consists of three geodesic sides. Imagine starting at the equator and going north to the pole. Then make a 90 degree turn and go the same distance. You are now back at the equator. Now, make another right angle turn. You get back to your starting place over a triangle. A triangle with 3 90 degree angles for a sum of 270 degrees. Gauss (one of the true greats, up there with Newton, etc) did surveying, a famous one being a survey of the Kingdom of Hanover. He surveyed a big triangle using three peaks somehow and showed the sum was greater than 180 degrees. He wasn't trying to prove this, he and everyone knew it would, but this is oft cited. There is another curious effect you'll notice with that equator to pole and back triangle. If you were carrying a local coordinate axis with you the whole time, which you maintained aligned with your path, you would find that it had rotated 90 degrees when you returned to your starting point. The is known as "holonomy" formally, and geodetic precession informally. That effect would not happen in flat, Euclidean space. And that is one of the effects that has been tested with General Relativity, recalling last thread. The earth's gravity induces a very small, but measurable spatial curvature to 3D space surrounding it. That causes gyroscopes to precess ever so slightly. In this GR context, it's known as deSitter precession, which is a curvature only effect (there are others, due to "Frame dragging" or the magnetic like gravitational analog due to moving masses, known as Lense-Thirring precession). Speaking of green stars: if our star is yellow, why do we have white light? Do stars with other colors have white light? Posted by: frammish at October 19, 2026 11:07 PM (rcENI) The spectral components of light come from the elements on the surface of the star that re-transmit the photons from the star for the last time. Imagine starting at the equator and going north to the pole. Then make a 90 degree turn and go the same distance. You are now back at the equator. Now, make another right angle turn. You get back to your starting place over a triangle. A triangle with 3 90 degree angles for a sum of 270 degrees.

>> in that as a two dimensional being the measurements would not be identified since the deviation could only be observed from the third dimension,
That's the thing. It is observable on the surface. The Flatlanders could indeed measure that. Start out, go straight a distance. Now, relative to your local spot, using a local coordinate axis relative to you, make a 90 degree turn. Keep you axes "straight" the whole time. Make another 90 degree and return to your starting point. Locally, you made 3 90 degree internal angle turns. ANd your local coordinate axes, which you carried only with you, are now rotated relative to where they were when you started. They did not rotate relative to you at all. That is the basic of *intrinsic curvature*, it can be measured purely in the space. No extra embedding dimensions are required. Gauss's Theorema Egregium was all about this, which he was stunned by. To appreciate this, you have to consider the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic curvature. Extrinsic is about curving in the external, ambient "embedding space", which we will assume is nice and Euclidean. Consider a cylinder. Take a flat sheet of rectangular paper and roll it around into a cylinder. You can do that without distortion (stretching or tearing). Even though that surface curves in the ambient 3D space, it remains flat intrinsically. Flatlanders would not notice that. Intrinsic curvature is about what is actually measurable and invariant about the surface itself, relative to itself. With these thought experiments, we are going down the road that led to Differential Geometry, and Riemann's perfection of it. Some things to ponder: What do we mean by "going in a straight line" on a curved surface? And to answer that, think about what "going straight" rigorously means even on flat plane. Now, think about what you mean by "parallel transport", how to carry vectors and "kept them straight" as you move them along such a curved surface. It was only recently that I truly grokked parallel transport, "going straight" in the geodesic sense, and the Levi-Civita connection. I thought I did, but realized I didn't. Somehow, with all that was going on with my mother, this became a mental distraction and I did gain some deep understanding of this. Posted by: GWB ------- I was curious if it was still there. Plugged the address into maps and it shows up. Looks like they're using it as an entrance to a theater. And Fairchild Airshow was always fun as a kid. Posted by: scampydog at October 19, 2026 11:56 PM (41CYW) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.06 seconds. |
