----- Looking for some clean river water? We've got you covered! The Cleanest Rivers In America Park Service crews pull water out of the Merced River in Yosemite and test it for bacteria, nutrients, and petroleum. They do the same in Glacier, on the North Fork of the Flathead. Idaho's regulators keep an eye on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Maine checks the bugs living on the bottom of the Machias. Year after year, the results come back the same. These ten rivers are as clean as they look. Far northern California gives the Smith River an unusually good water-quality record. A US Geological Survey assessment described its water as excellent and generally within objectives established for beneficial uses. California's 2026 Integrated Report adds a recent measure. Across 257 dissolved-oxygen samples in the Smith River estuary, none fell below the applicable warm-water habitat threshold. *** The Middle Fork Salmon spends roughly 100 miles inside the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, and Idaho's Department of Environmental Quality describes its watershed as essentially one of the most pristine in the state. The river was included in the original Wild and Scenic Rivers system in 1968. Federal management has kept development scarce along much of its corridor. A multi-day float can run for hours beneath steep canyon walls before reaching another developed site. Hot springs emerge beside parts of the route, while quiet beaches offer breaks between stretches of fast water. Idaho has approved temperature TMDLs for several tributaries where reduced streamside shade contributes to warming. The main river remains in much stronger condition. Few large American rivers combine this much protected land with so little settlement along the water itself, and the state's assessment reflects that advantage.Hit the link for more ----- Strangest foods in each state. ![]() The Veep's got jokes

How do you distinguish between transdowns (sincere and indistinguishable from those born with an extra chromosome) and downsface (mean-spirited white supremacist cultural appropriation)?

For Deer, many states have a “salvage” tag for car-killed animals. Watch (good luck?) for broken glass in the meat.
I understand why that the state holds jurisdiction over wildlife, but oddly their responsibilities seem to vanish when it applies to smashed up cars. Better have a good Collision/Comprehensive policy. Call your Insurance. Posted by: Common Tater at October 13, 2026 10:33 PM (NBNnb) 102

Re: roadkill-- Here, if you hit a deer, you are allowed to keep the meat if you wish. Elk too, if you survive. Otherwise, cops keep a list of volunteers they can call, who will take care of it if it's still fresh. Posted by: JQ at October 13, 2026 10:34 PM (rdVOm) 104

A lot of people don't know that chitlins are pig intestines.
The old joke was 'how do you cook chitlins'? The answer... Throw them in a pot and boil the shit out of them. Posted by: Florida Peasant at October 13, 2026 10:29 PM (Lo97M) *** When I was stationed in Sinop we had a young black female lieutenant get assigned to the unit. A nice enough young lady, if not particularly bright...what lieutenant is? I've no idea how she did it but her mom sent her the making for chitlins. (And this is Turkey, a very muzzie country). So she puts them in a pot in the little officers mess we hung around at, and forgot about them. Several.days later the stench was incredible. The colonel threw them out. Apparently this was some major cultural faux pas and she was in tears. Who the fu*k knew this was how you fix chitlins? Sheesh. I can still smell it! Some years ago, my late husband and I came up on a deer that was just hit by a car. Thar poor critter didn't die immediately, My husband stopped and shot that deer to relieve it's misery. We immediately took it home, cleaned and dressed it while still fresh. We missed going to work that day. But, good meat in the freezer. People need to be more mindful as to hitting a critter. At least put the poor thing out of its misery... Posted by: COMountainMarie at October 13, 2026 10:49 PM (96kpa) 125
At local and state fairs, frito pie is often served with the side of a small fritos bag torn off and chili ladled onto the chips. Eat it with a spoon/spork right out of the bag! Sometimes called a walking frito pie.

Fritos were invented by Charles Elmer Doolin in 1932 in San Antonio, Texas.
Fritos were first marketed on March 27, 1932 Background Doolin purchased a corn chip recipe and equipment from Gustavo Olguin, a local vendor, for $100. He began producing Fritos in his family's kitchen and later expanded operations as demand grew. The Frito Company became known for its unique corn chips, which were made by deep-frying extruded whole cornmeal. Evolution of the Brand Merger: In 1961, the Frito Company merged with H.W. Lay & Company to form Frito-Lay. (who degraded the recipe) Acquisition: Frito-Lay was later acquired by Pepsi-Cola in 1965, becoming part of PepsiCo. (who screwed the recipe to the wall) Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at October 13, 2026 10:50 PM (4tmEn) 127
