The dog said NO!

A Daily Dose of the American Rev

General George Washington and his British adversary General William Howe had at least one thing in common—they both loved their dogs. Numerous interesting and amusing stories about Washington and his dogs have passed down through history but let us save those for another today. The dog in the historical spotlight today is General Howe’s fox terrier Lila.

On October 4, 1777, Lila was with General Howe during the Battle of Germantown but somehow she became disoriented and lost on the battlefield. When the American army retreated that day, Lila followed it, wandering eventually into the camp of General Washington, wearing a collar that identified her as General Howe’s pet.

While some of the American soldiers thought the dog should be kept as a mascot or trophy of war, Washington disagreed, and he promptly dispatched a courier to return Lila to Howe, along with a note that read:

“General Washington’s compliments to General Howe. He does himself the pleasure to return him a dog, which accidentally fell into his hands, and by the inscription on the Collar appears to belong to General Howe.”

One of Howe’s officers later recounted that the general was thrilled and relieved to get Lila back. This was “an honorable act of a gentleman,” he said, taking her up immediately and putting her in his lap.

Meet The PetMorons

puffballxx.jpg

Good morning, probably too late for the thread today, but this is a combo gardening thread/pet thread photo. These popped up in my yard over the last couple of days, Puffballs I believe. Surprisingly large, they will get bigger, sometimes as big as a volleyball.

Alfred the Great in the foreground.

-Tom Servo

I don't think Alfred the Great wants us to touch the puffballs, Tom. I wonder why the puffballs think that this is a good time of year to puff?

I understand that the walk and hurricane were successfully negotiated.

2 Your cat's behavior may be different:

My cats aren't as picky about their food as I would have thought.

I ran out of the food that Chloe's previous owner provided me and just gave her the stuff I give my other cats. She adapted quite quickly without any fuss.

Allie doesn't like to eat pate-style cat food, though. She'll only eat the wet food if it's chunky.

Afternoon, all,

Dagny La Siberienne *used* to be picky about her food. No idea why. The meme above has good suggestions. But especially since I've had big black Stirling on his diet, she gets more to eat -- he was stealing half of her chow at each meal -- and eats it with gusto. Not all at once; it takes about four bowl visits. Which means her manservant, me, has to pick the bowl up when she leaves and conceal it where Stirling won't find it. Eventually Dagny comes back and gives me The Look, and I put her bowl down. Rinse, repeat.

5 Whoa. Read the post, then found no comments.

That's okay. First on Pet Thread should be shared by all.

🐈
In the random rotation of feral felines, we are down to three. Well, two now.

One is Angel, a sweet Siamese-looking kitten.

Kinky is your basic pale yellow cat, with a crooked tail; just couldn't use "Crooky" as a name; "Kinky" may be temporary.

"Bumper," another part-Siamese, was usually seen sitting on the bumper of the old obligatory rusting truck. She got caught by the cowboys. They've had her spayed and front claws removed, and are keeping her as a housecat. Still adjusting to home life with other cats, but confined to a bedroom, seems to like the comfy spots and the a/c.

Glad for that. Always concerned for the little critters out here. This week we found the remains of a good-sized hawk by the water tower. Just one big wing. Wonder what got it. (No windmills in the vicinity, but eagles, owls, and muchmore.)

Ony our little old black housecat continues to mostly confine herself to our bedroom. Seems to be half-blind, but manages to crawl up on the bed at night to sleep next to me.

Daisy the magnificent Malinois barks hello and also throw the ball.

7 The story about Howe and Washington is a good one: a much better illustration of Washington's character than the famous one about the cherry tree, or his ability to fling a silver coin across the Potomac.

8 My friends are busy with a growing family so I feed the cats now with food they brought over. Snowflake and her mom Starry are basically outdoor cats fine with kibble.

They will eat tuna fish happily, the good kind. I was surprised that sardines were a no.

Ralphy is doing well but there's 2 steps from the outside to inside. He was always fine with a bit of running room but the last few days he's been misjudging or something is off. I'll help him down the steps by holding onto his collar.

From now on though, I'll lift him inside the house so he doesn't hurt himself. He is full of life. As long as he can stand up by himself, I'll be there.

He was ALWAYS right by my late Mother's side. He'll be treated the same way.

9 Big Stirling is sleeping on a cushion next to me on the couch. No idea where Dagny is; she could be in her bedroom window sauna, or curled in my desk chair.

Freddy the Freeloader, the gray tabby-with-white shorthair semi-feral, is still visiting frequently. After slopping my feline hogs, I fed him this morning. When I came back from breakfast and errands, the air was still cool enough that I left the door open for a while. Stirling and Freddy immediately faced each other through the screen. Freddy meows; Stirling just looks, no hissing or growling.

I'm not going to let Freddy in. But is it possible that he could pass an infection to Stirling if they touch noses?

No. This are all applicable. There there is the primary one that seems to be missing:

"I am eating from a bowl on the floor with unidentifiable meat. YOU, are sitting at a table with SHRIMP!!!! MAKE WAY! MAKE WAY!!!! GIVE ME...N-O-W!!!!!"

(yeah, that one is universal and usually involves a bit of growling and low throat rumbles if there is deterrence of any sort)

13 My cat Allie has found another snoozing spot in a corner of my office.

I guess she got tired of me kicking her (not on purpose) when she tries to nap under my desk.

17 Hey, Tom Servo, I have purple spored puff ball fungus every year. It's one of the reasons I enjoy the last mowing of the year, because I'll nail one of those the second I see it.

I get a huge purple cloud out of the deal...which was the goal.

Cat comes to my bedroom door and starts scratching and meowing. I tell him to finish the food already there. He keeps scratching and meowing. So I get up, go over to the bowl, and see food still in it, tell him, "You eat this first!"...he starts eating it...

We have a Chigi. She was in a shelter until daughter adopted her. It did not work out for her, so of course Hubby and I being saps have adopted her.

Daisy is wonderful and we love her.

It is interesting having her living with us. The way our house was set up when she came to live with us is the way she thinks things should be the same. We move things around and she freaks out. Anything change she freaks out.

Has anyone of ya'll dealt with that??

A major street in downtown Vancouver, BC is named Howe Street, presumably after said general, and is the core of the financial district. No doubt it will soon be renamed to some unpronounceable and unspellable* made-up Indian name.

24 The masked pup demanding treats was adorable. All of our pups loved popcorn as a treat. (Steak would have been preferred but the budget didn't stretch to it.) Never knew if it was the taste of the popcorn, the crunchy texture, or if they just wanted the butter. Over a year since we lost Precious the Bichon, we still are on the verge of tossing some on the floor.

She might have bad memories of things being moved. The previous owner (before your daughter) may have been moving things out of the house (to move house) and the next thing Daisy knew she was sitting in a cage at a shelter.

It’s possibly the most traumatic event in her life, and when she sees stuff moving, she thinks she’s next.
