Gun Thread: 2026 TXMoMe Edition!

oct 11 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the TXMoMe Edition? That's right folks - the big event is this coming week! I hope you are rushing your TXMoMe attendance preparations to completion, and hope to see you there!

I am leaving in the morning and will be frantically stuffing things into a suitcase and the back of the truck tonight so I'll be in and out of the comments. Please use the opportunity to study up on range safety. Thanks!

PSA: It would be a really good idea idea to monitor the weather forecast up to the time of your departure. Having said that, weather predictions are just educated guesses and notoriously unreliable so if you want to cover all possibilities, plan on wet/dry/hot/cold. Here is a link to the Corsicana 10 day weather forecast.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

2026 TXMoMe

101126 texas flag scaled.jpg

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute, and I have said this probably nine hundred and twelve times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

TXMoMe veterans: please jump into the comments to encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun! What was your first MoMe like? What were you expecting? Were you surprised? Did you have a great time?

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks. I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

10/11/26 Update/Reminders/New Stuff

No changes this week. Please keep an eye on the weather for Corsicana.

NOTE TO ALL: This is a private event, held on private property, and is open by invitation only. If you have not contacted Ben Had, and received a personal invitation, you are, how do I say, not invited. Attendees: do not share the location of the event with anyone or risk losing your own TXMoMe invitation.

**

Shooters: Bring your own hearing and eye protection, and wear sensible shoes as the ground on the ranges can be uneven! Also, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons/ammo. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. Here is a link to Brinson Power Sports in Corsicana which sells ammo. They also sell ATV's if you want to grab one of those while you're there.

Anyhoo...

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. Most of you (I think) have endured this presentation before, so if there are other topics you would like to have covered, speak up in the comments and I will try to address your request.

We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program and this year will be focusing on the static pistol range as well as continuing to offer a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you.

These times are approximate and programs may change as weather conditions and participation warrant. We anticipate a hard stop on both ranges at 1pm on Saturday to allow everyone to participate in the bigly fun TXMoMe festivities.

Range Safety
You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance is mandatory if you want to shoot. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who wants to shoot plan on attending this important briefing. Again, we are conducting one combined safety brief each day. No exceptions.

At the conclusion of each day's safety briefing you will be asked to sign a general liability waiver, after which you will receive a color-coded wrist band. The color is different each day, and it is your ticket onto the range(s) for the day. No wrist band, no shooting that day. Don't want to sign the waiver? No problem, just do not expect to shoot. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, you are welcome to watch the live fire activities from designated observation areas.

All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. Want to do things your way? I suggest that your own personal range on your own personal property is a good place for expressing your individuality.

IMPORTANT: I would hope this goes without saying, but anyone failing to immediately and politely follow RSO instructions will be removed from the range(s). Period. No exceptions. This means YOU.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

24 Good evening all
I need to jump right in about something.
I saw this video on X put up by a female shooter who claims to be an instructor. She has 40 thousand followers. The video:
https://tinyurl.com/ypv2snjf
I commented that they shouldn't be firing in the air, people flinching because no eye and ear protection, and drinking alcohol. I asked her if she thought promoting this video was a good idea.
She responded that I'm an idiot for taking this seriously. It's a foreign country and it's just for fun.I just can't believe she thought this was okay.

Sharon, having personally observed weapons handling by those from other nations, I can tell you that not everyone in the world takes weapons safety as seriously as everyone here. The weapons handling skills (or lack thereof) on the part of the Russians and Middle Eastern cultures is legendary.

42 In a sense we are all RSOs in the sense that we all must look out for safety. If anyone sees anything going on that is hazardous - here or at your local range - you can and should call “knock it off”.

Posted by: Cow Demon at October 11, 2026 07:30 PM (ekZzx)

43 Ed L, that was my point in a way. First, she only said that in her response to me and second, why hold that up as an example of having fun. We don't look at our phones when we are on the range. Sitting around drinking beer and firing in the air is not something to emulate. I just thought that she, as an instructor, would be pointing out what not to do.

Watch some of the video of Russian conscripts and "kontractniki" ("volunteers") going through weapons familiarization and shooting their single 30 round magazine on the range before getting on the bus to the front lines. They're far more dangerous to each other than the Ukrainians. And that's before you consider epic fails like the one trainee who got turned into a helicopter when he tried to fire an improvised pedestal gun mount for an Mi-24 "Hind" helicopter 12.7mm rotary (Gatling) from the back of a truck.

The skill level of "instructors" in those cultures, especially if they're not familiar with firearms in the society as a whole, can be VERY low. But as they say, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is the king.

62 After last week's road trip (The Clark Fork river is amazing in the Fall), this week I made time to shoot despite having to work on Saturday.

The Nurse got a new birthday magnum, so I brought my S&W 28 to do some head to head testing. And then...the Nurse's Taurus got a squib load. Fucking Magtech. Because of course. The round literally got lodged in the barrel and had to be hammered out. Not cool.

Anyway, that aside....magnums are magnums. And they are not fun to shoot. Though the nurse did shoot a fucking THUMB sized group at 10 yards. Do not mess with the Nurse if she has a gun.

After the magnum, my G21 felt so mild and pleasant. And honestly...the Glock 21 really is a pleasant .45 platform.

67 48 I have a request but I can't stick around for an answer as the dog needs his run. I came into possession of a Glock 43x for carry. My eyes can't focus on rear sight, front sight, and target any more so some sort of optical sight is necessary. Any ideas? Suggestions?

I have this as my church gun. Get a Holosun 407k mounted. It will be a fine gun.

Is that Glock 43X set up for an optic? If not, mounting one can get expensive quickly because a custom cut on the slide may be required to mount an optic. If no mounting plate or cut exists, you might be better off trading in that Glock for something that can mount an optic.

I have a B&T "Hush Puppy" built on a Glock 19 Gen 5 whose slide is cut for an Aimpoint Acro. This is a tough optic, securely mounted to the slide that has a long battery life. It's one of the more expensive choices out there, though. There are a lot of cheaper options if you don't have to have the best of the best, though.

The rimfire pistol optic is the one that is most meaningful to her. First place individually and squad. She is now in the top squad on the team.

Someday, I'll make it to a MoMe ... not right now, alas.

Good range day. Hadn't shot my P2000sk and it makes a great carry gun in the cooler months, once I layer on the bulkier clothing.

Cigar stuff ... I know I'm crazy for aging my sticks. I've taken abuse for it many times, but I have this large end-table humidor and I tend to forget what's waaaay in the back. Smoked a bunch of MasterBlend Churchill Box Press that are at least three years young. Crikey, they are wonderful nutty, dense, spicy bits of heaven.

My new bolt carrier group arrived from PSA for the AR 10. I cleaned, lubed, installed, etc. Function check failed - rounds would only go in halfway!
Closer examination revealed that the forward half of the brass that went off on the bolt not in battery was still there. A .38 brush down the barrel dislodged it. It had pulled apart cleanly at about the midpoint.
I range tested after making sure all my PPE was in place, including gloves. No kaboom. That was good.
25 rounds through so far and all my digits are still attached. Later this week - accuracy testing. I shall report. Even though most of you will still be afterglowing from TX.
Sigh.

I was very surprised, played it cool, and then admitted to my wife that I didn't know it was a boat). Anyway the boat is sweet, the weather is perfect and it seems to be a happy accident.

Well, crap. I'll have to see what I can do this week. I really need to dry the filament, but maybe it'll work if I don't. And I'll have to figure out a way to hold it on. One that actually works this time.

This year our members have put more things on top of other things than ever before. But, I should warn you, this is no time for complacency. No, there are still many things, and I cannot emphasize this too strongly, not on top of other things.

239 I flew into to Houston last Saturday for nephews wedding at a pretty cool place called the Houstonian . . Then we dove down the coast and spent the week in Port Lavaca fishing for redfish, and I actually caught a 4-5 foot long alligator gar. Impressive fish that puts up quite the fight. Port Lavaca and Port O'Conner are all about fishing and hunting. Good time was had. Wish I couldve stayed and drove up to Corsicana though. Im gonna make it to one.
