A Moonlit Lane
by John Atkinson Grimshaw, 1874

About the painting:

James Lucas
@JamesLucasIT

That moonlight isn't real.

Every drop of it is oil paint...

It's called A Moonlit Lane, and it was painted by John Atkinson Grimshaw in 1874. A full moon hangs behind bare, tangled branches, the road below still wet from the rain, and every puddle and wall and dark hedge holds a little of that cold silver light. You can almost feel the chill in the air and hear the silence of the street...

The man who painted it was born in a cramped terraced house in Leeds, worked as a clerk for the railway, and taught himself almost everything he knew. At twenty-four, to his parents' horror, he quit his job to paint.

He even borrowed from photography, projecting scenes onto his canvas with lenses, and some of his contemporaries sneered that the results showed no marks of handling or brushwork, as if that were a flaw rather than an artistic miracle...

But the painter who mattered most saw it differently: James McNeill Whistler, the man famous for his own night paintings, came to visit him and admitted: "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures."

Dog action photography.

Sex sells.

Zoo animals discover snow.

You don't meet a lot of people who would rescue an orphaned wild rat.

Animal control took her puppies away when she was out foraging for food. But people notice the mama dog seemed distressed, and reunited her with the puppies at a foster home.

Old time TV shows collide with each other as Mannix holds Jack Tripper at gunpoint on the Brady Bunch living room set.

A young camel was ostracized by other animals because he's just too weird-looking. Can he make a friend?

Tolkein's pitch for Fellowship of the Ring.

Best in Show.

Lion and dachshunds are best friends.

Neighbor's dog decides he'd rather live with the family next door.

Instead of chasing off a burglar, this dog brought him his toy and asked for pets. He's no criminal, though -- he also brought his toy to the cops as they broke into the house to arrest the thief.

The eighties produced the greatest fashions in history, with a timelessness that makes them relevant even today:

94 Something very weird I'm seeing:

On X, several accounts are going through the early vote data in OH, PA, etc.

And in many of them, they are saying EV is down for both parties, but more down for Dems.
Especially in the 18-35 group, the most heavy Dem group.

yet, almost daily I see news articles saying exactly the opposite.

Someone is lying.

I don't know if someone already mentioned this, but what squared the circle for me was the detail that Democrats were only ahead of Republicans on Day 1, with a big drop-off. So they efficiently mobilized to produce numbers for the Democrat Activists With Bylines to dutifully tout, but it was a mirage caused by front-loading their early voters, not producing new ones.

28 > (also, no rape!*)

There wasn't much sex of any kind in Tolkien, other than the Túrin and Niënor incest incident in The Silmarillion -- and that wasn't explicit by any means.

For those who haven't read it, Túrin and Niënor, brother and sister, unwittingly banged each other, leading to the Bad Things that incest always leads to in mythology, even if it was accidental -- this wasn't done intentionally so that Túrin could get a Green Card.

They know, don't they? A suitcase means "Oh, no! My servant is going away!", but it's not as disturbing as the porta-kennels, which mean "Oh, no! I'm going to the vet!"

I learned ago to get the kennel out several days ahead of time, because the critters would hide out as soon as it made its appearance.

95 Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
@NYCMayor
This morning, the federal government turned the full force of the Department of Homeland Security against a sitting member of Congress for the offense of disagreeing with the White House.
The path to citizenship should not be weaponized against anyone, including Rep. Ilhan Omar, a naturalized American who swore an oath to this country — the same one that I took.
The promise of citizenship should not be contingent on someone agreeing with the federal government.

Nope. The offense is that of being a deranged criminal muslim c*nt, just like you, Madmani.

102 Didn't Boy George come out as a Trump supporter?

Dunno about that but I think he did come out (so to speak) as pro-Israel. Which is pretty bold for someone in that industry these days.

There is a town by that name in Northern Alberta, sort of between Grande Prairie and Peace River. IIRC, it has a tech college that teaches motorcycle mechanics.

109 In the early days of bodysuits, the maximum holding capacity of the snaps sometimes wasn't quite up to the task, leading to a surprise show when the snaps let loose. This was especially likely if the suit was overstuffed, so to speak.

I've often thought that any kind of stretch garment should come with a maximum PSI rating, like tires.
