Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Chris Rock: Wokeness is Like Old Testament Morality -- Lots of Rules and No Grace for Violating Any of ThemThe comedian claims it's "great" that we never stop talking about the "marginalized," but says there has to be forgiveness for transgressions. Or, I'd call them, fake and gay non-transgressions. Actor-comedian Chris Rock continues to blast wokeness, and is now accusing left-wing scolds of running a Salem Witch Trials-like campaign with their cancel culture attacks. Rock has been taking shots at wokeness for a while, of course. He targeted the woke culture in his 2023 special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage . But in a recent interview on The Dailypodcast, Rock got explicit about woke culture and what it is doing to our country. "The problem with wokeness is we're in the Old Testament right now," he said. "And the Old Testament has no forgiveness. The Old Testament didn't work. So they had to write a remix called the New Testament." When asked if he felt there was anything "redeeming" that has come out of the last decade of woke leftism, he was not upbeat and noted that when things are "institutionalized" they often go badly. "The Salem witch hunts. I'm sure the first three witches they caught were actually fucking witches," Rock said. "But then you open up a witch office and now you've got to start lying. Now you've gotta fucking make s-hit up because you've got overhead. You've got to justify the witch hunters fucking pensions and shit."He added that the media is fake and full of liars, and that Trump is right to declare that. Rock recently raised eyebrows during his press tour for his new film, Misty, when he said that Trump was right that the news media is filled with lies and fake news. "I'm not a fan," Rock said of Trump last week. "But it's weird when somebody gets one thing right, and the one thing almost clears them of all their other sins. The news is fake. He got that right."

The point he makes is that an oversupply of pointy-headed would-be intellectuals whose salaries are dependent on discovering new and exciting new heresies results, of course, in an overabundance of such accusations. When you pay someone to spin out accusations, they'll spin out accusations.

The Cathar heresy was an occasion for extreme brutality; I believe an event in this terror was the origin of the phrase "Kill them all, God will know his own."
A town was attacked by the King's army and the residents had all closed themselves up in the cathedral. Many cried and shouted out they were faithful orthodox Catholics, they had nothing to do with the Cathars. The famous phrase was the commanders' orders to his men, and the entire town was slaughtered, faithful Catholics and heretics together. Posted by: Tom Servo at October 06, 2026 04:29 PM (vEoWS) 27

I have a competing theory to the "over credentialed intellectuals bitter about low status" theory.
I think that is partially true, but there is a larger mechanism at play. Humans have an inherent desire to show virtue to the community, and the weak do it by point out other's deviation from the agreed rules. Scolds. Religion satisfies this need by giving people a rule book, and an authority to interpret and temper those rules. Without religion, many people still need an outlet to show they have virtue. Some need to show they are the authority and know the rules better than anyone. I see these kids on college campuses ejaculate out their righteousness based on rules they were told but don't understand. They are not yet credentialed, but they have all the anger and bitterness already. Posted by: bob (moron inbobnitus) at October 06, 2026 04:32 PM (pODHU) 40

My point to them is a) police are not going to protect your rights in a stop, that is your duty, b) never be an obnoxious prick to cops on the side of the road with badges and guns. Take your arguments to court and protect your own rights by knowing them, not arguing with the cops trying to avoid taking a trip downtown. They are not your teacher, parents, etc., and view their job as stopping crime and arresting criminals. Trying to insult and argue with them will result in worse things happening. Save it for an encounter in court with a judge and your own lawyer to prevent an educational beatdown resisting arrest on the side of the road charge. "Intellectuals" have been just making crap up for years. If they have exhausted the known facts and still can't come up with something new and different, they fail, so they just make it up. Look at eXcrement Kendi and his anti-racism garbage. Look at "women's studies," which used to be about home economics and now is about the evil patriarchy that prevents women from.... getting degrees in women's studies? Or some such shit.
I had an architecture professor like that. I didn't buy his garbage of architecture as sculpture schtick, and barely passed his useless studio class. Yes, architecture can be artsy, but if it doesn't function, there's no point. After all, it isn't a useful building if it doesn't have a toilet. Same garbage. Gosh, I saw a really important podcast recently that I want to recommend to Ace but I have no record of it.
It was two guys I know but not well. He was saying that Trump was heavily influenced by WWF and the art of drawing an audience, and Hulk Hogan. 40% of what he said was garbage, but this was a real insight and useful. He said that when WWF was losing audience, Hulk came out as a heel and it showed that people loved to hate him. It was great for the industry and for Hulk. He thinks Trump is doing the same in a lot of his tweets -- playing the heel just to get the audience and attention to a subject, and letting the facts of the subject get the glory. He also talked about Dennis Rodman and how he went to Nork with globetrotters, met Kim, became friends, and that started Trump's interest in normalizing relations with them. As I said, he said a lot of junk, but the idea that Trump intentionally does things that people hate was very interesting. Anyone recognize the podcast? Humans have an inherent desire to show virtue to the community, and the weak do it by point out other's deviation from the agreed rules. Scolds.
Religion satisfies this need by giving people a rule book, and an authority to interpret and temper those rules. Without religion, many people still need an outlet to show they have virtue. Some need to show they are the authority and know the rules better than anyone. I see these kids on college campuses ejaculate out their righteousness based on rules they were told but don't understand. They are not yet credentialed, but they have all the anger and bitterness already. ------ There's a great essay at substack called "All the Worst Features of Church". It lays out how the left learned (kept) all of the worst things about "church" and NONE of the good things (like grace). It goes into great detail and presents many of its examples from the standpoint of the young, who lack any vested interest in *ignoring* the hypocrisy and inconsistencies. The author is Mark Atwood. There was one skit of him having diarrhea in the 1950's segregated bathrooms that I fell out of my chair over while laughing hysterically. I did that also with a Seinfeld episode. Had to see the same show 3 times before I heard the dialogue (George goes to see a homeopath for his sinuses). I came close to death seeing it twice. Held laughter in the 3rd time to hear some of the dialogue and then cut loose. Every time that episode gets me. I laugh unrestrained and loud... and it can count as cardio activity. The famous phrase was the commanders' orders to his men, and the entire town was slaughtered, faithful Catholics and heretics together.
Posted by: Tom Servo at October 06, 2026 04:29 PM (vEoWS) The Cathars were heretics, which was considered a challenge to the political order as well as corrupting the Church. Their orgies, the suicides, the libertine behavior, was all very corrosive. I believe the town that was slaughtered did shelter Cathars, and there was no way to tell one from the other, since they lied. Also, sheltering Cathars instead of denouncing them was considered harboring the enemy, which made even faithful Catholics suspect. It is rather like the asshats who try to defend illegal aliens as some kind of good influence on American society, when we can prove they are corrosive in just about every way. When that defense moves kinetic, bad things happen, even if the actors are Americans. Posted by: tcn in AK at October 06, 2026 04:55 PM (GYqb1) 127

Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at October 06, 2026 04:24 PM (kpS4V) Obama has been disliked by a chunk of the Left since nearly the beginning, once he started actually doing things and they realized that he was a blowhard with "preferences, not principles." We see him as a radical socialist, while they see him as a conservative corporate Dem; and the way to square that is by recalling that they have a powerful delusion that fascism is right-wing. So the commies hate him for being the wrong kind of socialist, like how heretics are hated more than unbelievers. 141 The Cathar faith was very similar to Gnosticism. The Church had been crushing that almost from the beginning.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe ======== And Gnosticism was based on exaggerated ideas of Zoroastrianism. Personally, I don't believe that there would be ANY flooding problems. Warming in one area of the world means that another area gets colder. Rather like how the "permanent" ice cap in the Southern Hemisphere is always touted as shrinking in December... which would follow because December is MID-SUMMER in Antarctica.

Rock may have his points, but he clearly does not understand the Old Testament, nor its relationship to the New Testament, when he makes remarks like that. Forgiveness is written all over the Old Testament--but the message is, you can't earn it on your own.

And in modern times the Antarctic ice cap is a huge source of cold that makes the entire hemisphere colder. Posted by: Oldcat at October 06, 2026 05:07 PM (uhVAy) 161

I don't particularly as I think it is more protean than that. People try to raise their social level and drop those of their rivals. Men do it via aggression--verbal or physical, women by stealth and guile (veiled insults, social exclusion, etc.) but it is as if social signalling is going on to signify mating quality.
Posted by: whi ------------------ Exactly, but religion channeled and tempered that. Men also do it by showing value -- intelligence, loyalty, sacrifice. It is not all aggression. But we have a need to show virtue. It is just not a "God shaped hole," it is a virtue shaped hole. Posted by: bob (moron inbobnitus) at October 06, 2026 05:10 PM (pODHU) 164

128 Yeah something I've been saying a while: the left is a religion but it has no salvation. There's no way to gain atonement, you cannot get forgiven. Your sins are eternal, even ones you were born with and have no control over like being a male, or white, or normal.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 06, 2026 04:56 PM (nIKjK) Atheism in general is lacking in forgiveness and excessive in judgment. If one can never make a mistake without being crucified for it, and the rules change daily, then what is the point of going on? That's how we get Karens, both male and female. It is rather like the way Ol' Moe changed his mind about what Allah wanted based upon what Moe wanted, particularly concerning murdering Jews and raping children. An Atheist forms his god in his own image. Rather self-serving, in the long run. And completely lacking in morals and/or ethics. Posted by: tcn in AK at October 06, 2026 05:10 PM (GYqb1) 166

That poll that shows that white liberals--and only white liberals--are the only group that has a negative affinity for those of their own race. And that white, liberal women were even worse? That's decades of constant abuse and beratement of their minds that all evils everywhere are the fault of whites. And it spent near as much energy in corrupting as it did its defense: That to even name it was to be called a racist.
