The Morning Rant

punk-monkey.jpg

Cutting taxes is always...ALWAYS...a good idea. The leviathan needs to be fed to live, and cutting taxes decreases what our feckless and cowardly legislators can spend.

Except...it doesn't. they are happy to spend money we don't have, simply by borrowing from the world. And $40 trillion later, that is one hell of a bill coming due.

Trump Says He Is Considering Suspending Federal Gas Tax

In an Oct. 5 post on Truth Social, he said, "What's driving up Gasoline is no longer the Strait of Hormuz, because Record Numbers of Barrels are coming out now on an almost daily basis, but the word, 'Refineries,' where Russia's are being blown up by Ukraine, and where ours are being closed up, in Blue States, like California."

The federal gas tax is 18.4¢/gallon, which yielded about $25 billion in 2025. That's not a small amount of money, but the economic benefit of cheaper gasoline might make up for some of that tax loss.

As for the refinery crisis in America? Yes, and we should have been building them for the last 40 years, but thanks to the watermelons in almost every state, and onerous and restrictive federal regulation, building a refinery is a huge undertaking. California has been closing refineries since the 1980s, and America has lost about 10 refineries just this decade!

Perhaps President Trump can nationalize the recently closed refineries in California in the interest of national security. And fast-track the expansion of existing refineries and the building of more in red states that are amenable to high-paying jobs.

To be fair, American refineries have become more efficient and have expanded production significantly, so the raw number looks worse than it is. But spreading production around the country is a good idea, simply to make sabotage of our refining capacity a more complex operation.

And of course the delightful bonus of stick a thumb in the eye of the rabid environmentalist left never gets old!

18 building a refinery is a huge undertaking

It is, but even worse than that is that its construction spans enough years for a change in the national government. What is OK under the GOP is anathema under the Democrats, especially where Oil & Gas is involved. Ever since that golden-boy light-worker jerked the permit for Dakota Gas, major companies have been damned leery of accumulating hundreds of billions of dollars in sunk costs, only to have their permit jerked on a whim by the Democrat-in-office.

That's what killed the nuclear power industry, and that is what is killing the Oil & Gas industry.

Manufacturing a commodity is a low profit rate business is why. For the most part, the US does not export fuel (and until Trump and fracking, we did not export LNG or oil either. So producing for the domestic market is a competitive exercise that yields a low profit rate versus finding and exploiting new oilfields, investments into other fuels, etc. So investment always goes to whatever the CEO, board, and stockholders think is going to be the next big thing yielding above normal profit rates than mundane crap. Same reason power companies don't spend a lot investing in electrical network improvements, gas companies on building new pipelines, etc.

Low margin business that is only competitive with other investment choices when interest rates are rock bottom.

That is why Trump wants US interest rates down in part.

Black and white fallacy does not make for good politics which is why libertarians get their ass handed to them in elections. Some people, particularly those in driving type jobs, are hurting from high fuel prices, so any amelioration of their pain makes them more favorable to retaining GOP in office. Oil is a global market now that US oil can be sold abroad again. Fuel is not currently.

But it is consistent that investment money (which is discretionary spending) will go to what the mgmt/owners/etc think will bring the highest yield. Or in bad times, not be invested at all. Contra Keynes, it is investment increase or lack thereof that drives business cycles--not consumers or government.

And that is also why during Dem administrations, they shut down facilities like in CA that are running at a loss currently. You can only run a factory at a loss for so long before you close it. Future CA environmental laws kicking in made it almost impossible to run a refinery in CA so the companies figured you cannot fight City Hall and folded.

71 52 Walking back or outright eliminating some of the stupid mandated alterations to basic motor fuel would lower costs, and permit some of the mothballed refineries to reopen, too. Shitcan the "ultra-low sulfur" Diesel requirement, for one. And the oxygenate requirement for gasoline. Stick with the "no lead" requirement, because preserves the catalytic converters that make the oxygenate requirement unnecessary.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

From my understanding--oxygenates in fuel stem not from need but from the archaic in tech terms, Clean Air Act of early 1990's. OBD-II computers basically obliterated the need for it due to a better ability to adjust fuel intake for different temperatures to prevent smog and other nasty byproducts.

MTBE was the original oxygenate used until we found it was leaking into water supplies with ill effects and then they started on our current ethanol crap which persists due to corn farmers and at the time, nat sec ideas when we imported oil from abroad of keeping a domestic source of energy. Not really needed now by my understanding.

85 Part of the problem with building new refineries, or even keeping old ones operational, is the massive size of these things. I don't think people realize how big a refinery is.

There's one in NJ that's not even a big one relatively speaking, but it covers almost 1500 acres. That's about 1,200 football fields.

These are yuge complexes that cost billions to develop and probably decades to complete.

Yes, the oxygenate requirement is an anachronism. No longer "needed" to protect the environment. They reduce the energy content of the fuel, meaning you have to burn more of it to get the same miles. And cause the fuel to be costlier to make. Shitcan the oxygenate requirement, and you would get cheaper gasoline, and more miles per gallon using it.

Both so far are not proven datapoints. If the Democrats do not turn out by EV or mail, then they are not going to turn out election day.

Right now the biggest miss seems to be that pollsters are modeling likely voters by those willing to respond to pollsters rather than screening questions and background (voter histories on past voting indicate strongly whether they will vote or turnout in the present.) At least so far, the 18-29 yutes are not showing up at all in actual vote by mail or EV stats. History tells us that as time gets closer to elections, these voters are the least likely to turnout in person or even early. That screws up poll weighting for a big turnout by yutes by heavy inclusion because they answer text requests for polling. Selection bias. Ditto for older TDS types in EV, it is appears that the stage four TDS cannot wait to vote against GOP but that is a small percentage of voters.

These midterms so far appear to have an older skew to them and Boomer No Kings types are voting early and responding to polls as are yutes that probably will not vote.

Exactly.

The United States lost approximately 1 million barrels per day of refining capacity & saw several major facility closures or conversions since 2020 due to poor economics, aging infrastructure, and changing market demands.

Look up: Notable U.S. Refinery Closures and Conversions (Recent Decade)

Forbes: Operable U.S. refineries dropped from about 135 in 2020 down to 130 by 2026, as companies prioritize large, low-cost Gulf Coast complexes over aging or high-cost regional plants.

And the shift to "renewable" fuel: U.S. hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) renewable diesel capacity surged over the last few years, climbing past 5 billion gallons annually. The vast majority of this product flows directly to California, where state incentives (like the Low Carbon Fuel Standard) make it economically viable.

But, Market Consolidation and the "RIN Cliff" - The aggressive pivot to green fuels has hit a ceiling, with saturated markets & falling profit margins.

The frantic pace of conversions slowed dramatically.

170 About a year ago, I made a prediction (I don't make many, but I did make this).

I said that 2026 would be the lowest turnout and lowest spending midterm in decades.

Well, it's not lowest spending. Both parties are spending a lot, but it is gearing up to be lowest turnout, the hole centered around Democrat bastions, especially in states with a modicum of election integrity built into the system.

Why did I predict that? Because I figured fraud was high and that the Trump 2.0 admin was serious about hurting Democrats where they consolidated power: fraud.

Fingers crossed!

172 I'm confused.

Should I believe the polls, which are PROJECTING anticipated data, or should I believe the party registration numbers, which are REFLECTING actual data?
Posted by: Washington Nearsider

Treat them as one data point amidst a host of others. Due to technological changes (scam callers have destroyed response rates), and sociological changes, people don't trust pollsters to respond, public polling as we know it is dying.

Private polling, which is escalating in costs due to non response problems and the need to triangulate data--for example, they actually check voting records of respondents to see if they voted in the past or partisan skew rather than taking their word for it, and using geographic random bloc strategies to determine overall error rate, is still doing okay.

But polling is getting lousy at determining just who is going to vote which is a) dependent on party/candidate turnout mechanisms for the sporadic voter class, b) the inclination of that individual voter to want to be turned out.

I am excluding fraud from the equation because we have guesses about how big it is but not firm data except it almost always benefits Dems.

I really don't know. The "Yes" (pro-independence) side is well-organized, and I see a great many yard signs around here. The "nos" were kind of late getting out of the starting gate, but signs are springing up now. I take that as a sign that the "nos" misread the mood of the public, and figured they had it in the bag, but have now woken up.

IIRC, only about one third of the people in the original Thirteen Colonies were strongly pro-Independence.

A "Yes" win in this referendum does not automatically lead to Alberta gaining independence. It directs the provincial government to begin negotiations with Ottawa towards separation. Ottawa cannot be expected to bargain in good faith. If the "Yes" vote is strong, I see the current squishy conservative leader in Alberta to be replaced by more of a firebrand. Then Ottawa does something particularly stupid and evil, and triggers a Unilateral Declaration of Independence.

Why should any vendor wish to come up with innovative new refinery equipment when no new refineries are being built and the need is only for replacement fittings?

Second term midterms are a different cat than first midterms. And due to identity voting, we get a muddled signal when looking at past elections. But your assertion is historically safe that second term midterms are usually lower in turnout. That means voter mobilization of base voters versus the sporadic can lead to unpredictable swings like in 1998 depending on whose base is more motivated to turnout. I think this will be an older and whiter midterm turnout year and perhaps higher rural/suburban than urban if Ohio is predictive.

In small part, "Sixteen community groups have agreed to support a “community benefits commitment” with HRP Group, owner of the former oil refinery site along the Schuylkill River, the company said."

193 Amusingly 2020 is the highest on record but I assume that's mostly due to the sheer number of fake ballots that year.

194 Every single published public poll I have seen has talerico winning, some by as much as 9 points. That is statistically impossible here in Texas. There is no way any democrat can win a state wide election by 9 points. I saw a campaign poll released by paxton that has him winning by 4 points, that is about where I think the race will end up.

We are being gaslight and they are trying to keep republicans in Texas from voting.
Posted by: Mister Scott

Yep. Problem is that the media that carries these polls has close to single digit belief among GOP about them. I think these are aimed at the discouraging the GOP leaners more than the base. The problem for the Dems is that the GOP base has been growing faster than the Dems and in a number of 'swing' states as seen in CNN's coverage of all places.

195 The fakenews is big on playing up decrepit 68 year old Karens in nowheresville Ohio and how they don't want data centers. They are all former three time Trump voters (and probably McKinley voters) concerned about their property values.

The youth never turn out. They really never turn out for midterms.

But every four years it's "the year of the YOUTH vote!"

In Ohio, it is running below that. About 8-9 percent so far. And yutes are usually the ones that vote early by mailin requests, not early nor election day.

199 This race isn't going to be close, but Talarico will get about 45%.
--
That was my take during the primary, when they were releasing polls showing him beating both Paxton and Cornyn.

Because Talarico's number was the same against either--that was his ceiling, not his floor.

They keep citing this but often media just puts on Democrats claiming to be GOP base voters again and again. You choose--gay or fake, fake or gay sort of coverage.

202 We are being gaslight and they are trying to keep republicans in Texas from voting.

There are quite a number of state offices that are up for election too. It ain't just about Paxton and the do-nothing cardboard cut-out of a US Representative.

203 Perhaps President Trump can nationalize the recently closed refineries in California in the interest of national security.
Posted by: rickb223

Nationalizing won't remove the CA policies that lead to their closure, nor the selective regulatory enforcement. The operating costs of a refinery in CA will not change either. And, you're handing the next Dem administration a weapon to shut down other companies or allow forced sales to cronies. Bad idea all around.

=======

There was that Republicans for Talarico group that became famous for all the right reasons.

The women who started it were literal Democrats who had long histories of working for Democrats.

It got shut down the next day after it was found out.

205 I would not discount that the 3-5 % of the "youth vote" (22-34)" that voted for Trump in 2024, thinking that he will give them unlimited free time, nirvana and Sidney Sweeney, and got very disappointed that he did not, will go and vote for you next red-green nazi du jour on the D ballot.

206 It’s not just govt. that stopped refining from expanding. Blackrock and Bloomberg with their ESG bullshit closed off a lot of credit sources to refining for several years.

And they're declining as a % of the population overall, especially among dems, who have kids at Euro levels.
