Susan Collins fucking SMOKED Jackson at the debate last night. Like. Embarassed him.

Topic: What one question do you want to ask your opponent.

Collins: You served in Augusta for more than 20 years and were President of the Senate. In that time, more than 1/3 of your bills were unanimously voted down in committee. If you can't even get the support of a single Democrat, how are you going to get anything done in a closely divided Senate as its most junior member?

110 101 Collins: You served in Augusta for more than 20 years and were President of the Senate. In that time, more than 1/3 of your bills were unanimously voted down in committee. If you can't even get the support of a single Democrat, how are you going to get anything done in a closely divided Senate as its most junior member?

Jackson: uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

They know that an at all fair moderator will end up with them in a fail-fail state. Either they moderate, and piss off the DSA types who might kill them, or they don't moderate and go full fire breathing commie and piss off everyone else.

I remember one of my government teachers in the before times high school era saying that one of the strengths of our system (and this was echoed by Shelby Foote in the civil war series) is that it forced moderation and compromise in order to appeal to the people. Social media and insularity between groups is forcing that system to break down.

They haven't pulled anything, but they've barely responded to the late stage onslaught of ad dollars Republican groups started throwing at the state a few weeks ago.

Like, Schumer gave Talarico $2 million. That gets you late night ads outside of Dallas at this point in the campaign.

Meanwhile, Thune pledged tens of millions.

There are two contested senate races where Democrats are outspending Republicans (NC and GA) through the end of the campaign, and they're barely outspending Republicans in those states.

Fun fact, Maine's electorate is a large majority of old white people much the same as the rest of New England (median age about 45) . So Collins is a literal representative of voters there. 22 percent of the population there is 65+ in age which means more like about 30-40 percent of the electorate.

Depends on turnout now. Vote by mail figures do not show a blue wave in Georgia for example and early voting is just starting (in Georgia the early voting is now truncated compared to previous elections so it will not really be a direct 1:1 comparison with past years). NC is a hard state to read and TJM probably knows more about what is going on than I do.

Haven't seen much actual voting stats if any from there and ALL polls now are considered suspect and prediction markets are trash.

We also face the issue of how independents are going to break--most are actually leaners, not true independents and these are the most difficult to reach in polling and also turnout. Doesn't appear that we are getting huge voting numbers that way in the competitive states (ignoring those that primarily vote by mail in the West).

The idea that the state that went Trump+3 was suddenly an easy win for Democrats at the federal, statewide level because Roy Cooper, who left his governorship a couple of years ago in a terrible position because of Helene and his criminal policies, was always ludicrous.

Last time Cooper won statewide election, there were 400,000 more registered Dems than Reps (he won by 250,000 votes). There are now 10,000 more Reps than Dems. And, the propensity to send senators of the "wrong party" by PVI is far less than the propensity for electing senators of the "wrong party" by PVI. Think Hogan in MD or Romney in MA.

He's got name recognition, which is not nothing. But it's far from everything.

It's how politics work, and the "watch where they spend the money" technique is so chock full of false positives (both parties spent a total of $200 million in Texas for the senate race in 2024, and that race didn't end up close at all) that I find it pretty much useless as a barometer.

Posted by: Tuna

Smart campaigns merely send such voters fliers, etc. Because they are self activating. Waste of money to contact in most cases unless it is an early voting state and they haven't voted yet. Good campaigns from demographics and other background can pretty much figure out voting patterns of someone like the supervoter.

The indys that are sporadic in voting and move around a lot like yutes will usually be the target for GOTV operations.

So far, in states reporting on vote by mail (vbm), the 18-29 year olds are not voting like in previous elections. In Ohio, apparently down to 2014 levels. That is going to hurt democrats more than gop because young voters skew Dem and if they don't turn out by vbm, they are likely not to early vote nor vote on election day. Dem GOTV structure since 2018 at least has been designed to get them to vote by mail.

All of campaign analysis is triangulation of data sources and the rise of candidates that are the political version of The Producers! makes using campaign funding naively as the only market as questionable by itself. The most strategic of campaign funding is Senate and House committees that can now explicitly coordinate with candidates of their party and spend on ads on their behalf. The indy dark money cannot as of yet and is limited to the call Senator so and so and tell them ....... So they run mainly negative ads which depresses turnout, particularly yutes and sporadic voters.

The reason why political science though fared better in recent replicability studies on research while sociology and education studies could not be replicated, is that like economics and price, the basis of much of poli sci research is the vote data point to which everything else is attached.

We know campaign funding spent on ads, gotv, candidate appearances, etc. influences the number of votes for a candidate but it is not a one to one relationship.

Dispersal of places receiving the ballots makes it more difficult to tamper--few GOP ballots to discard in cities, harder to tamper in GOP red areas.

Do what Trump wanted for vbm, special envelopes, tracking end to end, etc. and that makes it very dangerous to tamper, not impossible but a lot more perilous than today. And you may or may not know, USPS actually images the front and back of all mail now (stemming from the anthrax attacks year ago) and has pretty accurate tracking even when the mail is just first class mail.
