Wednesday Night ONT - October 7, 2026 [TRex]

10072026-tractor.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and fully stocked. Step up and place your order.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Early morning activity planned here, so won't be around much in the ONT comments tonight. Please don't make a mess of the place. The cleaning charge is horrific. JQ is in charge and will rule with an iron fist.

Whisky to be aged in space for first time in university satellite project

Engineers in Scotland and Japan are planning to put Scotch on a rocket in 2028, sending a satellite containing samples of whisky and its base ingredients on a five-year mission to orbit the Earth.

It is hoped the frequent changes between extreme heat and freezing cold experienced by the whisky as it rotates the planet every 90 minutes could speed up the maturation process.

This could potentially open the door to future production of space-aged whisky, which the scientist behind the project expects to have "very bold" flavours as a result of its unusual journey.

Funny. My university experience did not involve launching rockets to age alcohol.

Mandatory Maiden

Iron Maiden released its ninth studio album in 1992 titled "Fear of the Dark." The song "Fear of the Dark" was written by bassist Steve Harris. It was the twelfth and final track on the album. I'm not a musician or a music critic but it is in a different class than the other eleven. I scrolled through the rest of the album thinking that a deep cut might be fun to feature and kept coming back to "Fear of the Dark."

The song has become a staple of Iron Maiden's live shows. It has a mix of tempo, the crowd sings along, and Dickinson adds a theatrical flair. It is metal, but there is nothing else like it. It is unmistakably Maiden. It is over seven minutes of pure energy. It isn't just a song - it is an event.

I had initially planned to include a clip from Metallica shows at the Las Vegas sphere for this part of the content but the clips I saw didn't resonate with me. Impressive visuals and nothing about the music was objectionable, but it felt like Metallica was providing the soundtrack for a movie which was inserted between the crowd and the band.

I have likely included Fear of the Dark before and probably will again. I make no apologies. Anyway, here is Iron Maiden playing Fear of the Dark live in Brazil in 2017 - twenty five years after the song's 1992 release:

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Burls Art. The sole and exclusive purpose of the channel is showing crazy ways to build guitars. Yes, it has a little shock value but the workmanship and visibility into the process earns it a place in the content. It is a business rather than a hobby. He also builds commissioned guitars.

The host does not give his real name. The channel has over 784k subscribers. Several videos have attracted millions of views. Posting frequency is about three to five a year. I'm not qualified to opine on the quality of the guitars as musical instruments or art, but I'm mostly fascinated that someone can sustain a single YouTube channel dedicated solely to making guitars.

One man's trash is another man's treasure? Playing metal with metal?

This guitar sold for $4,800.

I can answer that without going to space.

Balcones Distilling ages its whiskies for notably short periods, often as little as 2 years or less, due to the rapid maturation caused by Texas’s intense heat and wide temperature swings.

This climate forces barrels to "breathe" more frequently than in cooler regions, accelerating extraction and allowing the distillery to release spirits with deep flavor profiles much faster than traditional methods.

The whiskey that they age only 24 months has won numerous awards.

Buddy and I pooled our money together and ordered the first Iron Maiden album via Gibson's drug store (which was kind of a Woolworth type store). When it arrived, the Far Side style matronly lady looked at it and sniffed, then handed it over.

We were cutting edge metal heads in that small Wyoming town.

First concert I ever saw was Maiden on their Somewhere in Time tour, in Glendale AZ, 1987.

Carbon can reduce oxidized uranium minerals transported in ground water, and cause them to replace other minerals in the bone. 81 So I'm about two hours into the follow up to Disco Elysium, No Parade: For Dead Spies, and I do not not like the protagonist you play as, it's a female spy named Cascade, she looks like Jodi Whitaker and sounds like Marge Simpson's sister with a gravely, 4 pack a day voice.

Aesthetically and visually it's comparable, game mechanics are slightly different, there is no thought cabinet, the inner monologue is not to the same caliber as Elysium, it's bigger game world but overall, it's a pale comparison.

For instance, the Secret of Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge, was leaps and bounds better than the 1st game, which was a great game itself.

I'll finish this game, but I'm dissapointed.

When spending other people's money on ourselves, people tend to maximize quality while ignoring price. If they had been spending their own money on something for someone else, they'd minimize price and be less concerned with quality.

https://tinyurl.com/ympuzdan

And I have some mosasaur bone, and ammonite fragments, too. It never occurred to me that they might be radioactive, but I have the means to check it. That Precision Scintillator was introduced in 1954, and it has acorn tubes in it, invented during WWII for proximity fuses. It would be right at home in that Forbidden Planet movie. I have the Scintillator, the manual, the calibration source, and the leather case. I did load it up with batteries once, and it worked just fine. The sensor is a large crystal of sodium iodide, coupled to a photomultiplier tube. A gamma ray passes through the crystal, causing a faint flash of light, which is picked up by the photomultiplier tube, and amplified thousands of time, resulting in a current pulse: a "count".

114 The UK DM has two different stories of motherhood tonight:

1) A petite fashionista, apparently living well near Dallas, Texas from photos of her house and poses, stabs her tall husband in the forehead and then her two sweet children, ages 3yrs and 10months early Tues morning. Due to Clancyitis aka post partum depression. Right. The babies thankfully will live after being stabbed in the chest and abdomen after her husband called 911. EMT's said she wanted to kill herself. Officers said this changed when they appeared and she wanted a lawyer. Another for the growing list. Demons walk among us.

2) A young mother in Ohio fought Stage 4, 2B triple negative breast cancer and a double mastectomy when her first daughter was 1yrs old (now 9yrs old). She then developed headaches and a brain tumor metastasis and kept fighting with partial brain radiation and a PARP inhibitor for BRCA mutations to stop the tumor's growth with no active disease. In 2023 she conceived naturally and was able to have a second baby girl, 22mo old. She said, "My life with these kids is messy and perfect and I love it."

The implement in the top pic is a swather of some kind. Well, a John Deere swather, by the color of it. I have not seen swathers that do a triple swath before. I suspect the crop is some kind of green feed, like alfalfa?

Here, they often swath grain or canola, let it dry in the swath for few days, and then combine it. But weather lately has been good, so mostly straight combining is being done.

So, if you haven't seen "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" You don't really get it, but there is a significant scene preceding the final conflict. It was the entirety of "The Number of the Beast." and I laughed my ass off for how ridiculous it seemed while still being appropriate for the moment, and then I laughed even more because what made it so ridiculous and so appropriate is that I liked Iron Maiden, I liked them when I was a kid, when they were one of the major instruments of youthful rebellion and FUCK YOU ROCK! And realized. . . _I'm_ a Maiden Fan!! That's what we look like now rocking out in the car.

Posted by: polynikes at October 07, 2026 11:10 PM (KC5Lt)

Canola is a cultivar of rapeseed (which is a relative of mustard). Rapeseed oil contained too much erucic acid to be palatable, but had industrial uses. By good old selective breeding, Canadian agribusiness was able to create a rapeseed so low in erucic acid that the oil was palatable, and fit to cook with. Hence "Canola". It's really striking to see a field of canola next to a field of flax, with its blue flowers.

Yeah, rotating crops is a good thing. To plant the same crop year after year will make the soil poor. You need to let the soil retain the nutrients it needs and help build those nutrients back up. So farmers rotate crops to keep good soil.

A concept that WHITES celebrate and share and utilize while growing food. While it was an accidental habit over time, supposedly with the Mennonites was actually defined by a BLACK MAN! who also whites celebrate, and almost never gets a day of recognition during Black History Month. 217 One of my Friends in the Corps came from money, he was from Marin County, that says how well off his family was, not super money but money. One of the reasons we bonded was first, I was a damn near psychopath, willing to do damn near anything for a story, he could get me. He said a number of times I reminded him of his dad, because while his family is from money, his dad wanted to be a normal working class guy, and he did a good job at his fraud, but at the same time, he recognized things.

One of those things was QUALITY! And my friend found it funny when we went to his family house for New Years, and his dad opens the licquor cabinet and there was 2 of everything, but he said, something that I said almost verbatim. "Stoli straight, everything else for mixing, Beam for mixing, Don't touch my Livet." Because I just happened to be a Livet guy.

It's even more funny because his dad kinda hated me, but his mom absolutely loved me. I guess it's true about people who share characteristics are more likely to find the flaws in each other because we recognize our own.
