I relate to most of this ONT. Thank you.
The 1970's kid didn't mention riding bikes in DDT clouds. The most exciting evening of the summer week for my brother and me, other than the ice cream truck. If both had happened at the same time we would have spontaneously combusted with joy. Mother would simply tell us not to ride in the street. Except it was in the 60's, the rest was the same of being outside all day. Once we moved to the farm no one knew where anyone was. We could have been dead from a stampede or snake bitten or drowned. She knew no one would kidnap us as they'd regret it. When we went to our grandmother's, every Saturday of our lives til we drove, we were then with feral cousins and still not allowed in the house unless it was raining or cold. They let us in for meals only. She and her sisters would go shopping and leave seven of us in the car. Most of our bodies were in the car, but legs & heads were hanging out. Or we made baboon noises at people or acted mental. No worries about kidnapping then, either. I totally got the diagram of the bass player. You did really good, Weird Dave, to do this so quickly after forgetting. Thanks for not forgetting. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 02, 2026 10:23 PM (hzuYO) 41

Tennessee botched the death penalty. That is actually a blessing in disguise... Hear me out. Now we get to do it the right way: firing squad? electric chair? hanging? NO. We need to make a pay-per-view special where we put her in a large hydraulic press and smash her thinner than a fruit roll up. After that, we feed the "remains" to some rats.
We have a press at work that is big enough to fit her in, only have to remove about half of the 11 platens. Its a difficult task, but I will do it for justice. Posted by: Lemmiwinks at October 02, 2026 10:26 PM (mTzaS) 46

I'm trying to remember the weirdest injury of my husband and they all blur into confusion. Married 47yrs.
A couple of weeks before our wedding he cut his hand really badly making dinner. I got him in the car and he was sort of giddy from bleeding (it was a lot of blood). He held a towel on it and above his head for the drive to the ED. Until the day before our vows he was wearing a gigantic bandage on his left hand. It was the start of something once a year or more. When we were broken up once in college he showed up at my door with a hand injury and gravel embedded into his thumb/palm. He was riding in a parking lot of a bar on the tailgate of a truck. Friend patched out and he fell and decided he'd go see his student nurse. It was late and I was in bed on a school night. I opened the door and looked at his hand. Asked wth he thought I'd do about it (I doubt I had a bandaid, much less stuff to clean it). I had no time or pity for the bum who kept breaking up seasonally so he left. He went to the ED the next day for debridement and an antibiotic. I ain't no fool. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at October 02, 2026 10:36 PM (hzuYO) 65
Another option for the death penalty (also pay-per-view):
Stand that evil scrunt out in the Bonneville salt flats with a rope around her neck. Make sure the rope has at least 1000' coiled up with the other end attached to the bumper of a '69 Chevelle. There’s more than a slight bit of truth to that, but sill, more 70s from my experience. The fashion…the bike handlebars. But they really don’t touch on the deep down remembrances… Slight skin abrasion? Mercurachome. Painless. Bloody gash? Methiolate. Ouch! And I don’t remember the actual reasons… but there was the spray-on “plastic-ish” bandage. It seemed to get the job done. Right back at it. The med that never reached her vein caused necrosis of both inner elbows. Plus it can cause pulmonary edema. It sounded like a pack of drunk chimps tried to start her IV. You want gold-backed currency.
You will settle for Fiat currency. You get Yugo currency. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 02, 2026 10:35 PM (n2qDf) I know this is a joke on the Yugo being a Fiat, as much as the Lada was. There is a school of thought that the advent of the trans Atlantic cable and the telegraph net in the US broke the hard currency standard since the banks could kite debts and resolve them faster than they could be settled in gold or silver, and this made "debt backed assets" a normal financial item. Under telegraph communications, any attempt to settle a debt in physical gold could never catch up with the debts being created, and traded or cancelled by a countering debt. This point of view is in support of the idea that some sort of globally shared ledger is the ultimate expression of this trend, and it would not be inflationary if there were either some backing mechanism, or if there was a token of sort that had a hard limit to production to prevent inflation. Gold “backed” was a post Depression scam, for the most part. You want the real thing.
America actually had the largest stock of free circulating gold coinage ever in world history. Prior to FDR outlawing gold, natch. The argument was, people were “hoarding” gold, and this was “against public policy”. He did this as an executive order, congress nor the courts really did nothing. Presumably when they acquired 20,000 tons and piled it in vaults at Ft. Knox bullion repository, this isn’t “hoarding”. He also reneged on existing government gold Bonds (a form of default) and forbade gold clause lease contracts for real estate. The latter were very common, particularly for long term 99 year lease. No telling what bullshit can happen to money in a hundred years, a gold clause contract protected the property owner from financial jiggery-pokery. Before Greenspan went over to the dark side he penned a very succinct paper in 1966 entitled “Gold and Economic Freedom”. Posted by: Common Tater at October 02, 2026 11:13 PM (lDzxK) 116

Posted by: Cow Demon at October 02, 2026 11:26 PM (6jna9) Hard currency puts an end to central bank printing, which is the cause of inflation. Inflation destroys saved wealth, and high enough inflation makes it a good deal to have a short time preference, and buy everything today, since actual goods with value will only increase in an inflationary economy where money just loses value. Short time preference means not investing in long term things like houses, decent cars and marriages, since the cost will invariably become greater the longer the debt is serviced. It is claimed that high inflation destroys futures, and ruins morals of a nation, since all the virtues have to do with saving for the future, and preparing for the future, not satisfying wants today. Posted by: polynikes at October 02, 2026 11:32 PM (KC5Lt) the financial panics were less in scope than the Depression, and generally dampened out without intervention. The last big one, 1898 was notable because the US Government got caught up in it and almost had to declare a default until the big banks bailed it out. The gold reserve system had issues with business cycles due to easy loans made possible by both banks kiting debts, and Congress allowing issuance of unbacked loans for development. However during the period from 1865 - 1890 the US dollar was deflationary, in spite of honoring the greenback fiat script printed to finance the Civil War and the various panics. Remember, banks had to physically clear their debts, and there was the profession of the man who collected the bank notes for a bank, and then would turn them in to the bank issuing them to be reimbursed for gold. If the bank had overprinted, which was profitable of course, this could bankrupt the bank.
some of the "wildcat" banks had their main branch so far out in the sticks it was hard to find, and depended on that to keep them solvent. Paper notes always were lost or destroyed so overprinting a small amount was not risky, but it would lead to greedy overprinting. There was a central clearing bureau that was as private as Wall Street that did nothing but record and clear debts, and provide guidance as to which bank appeared solvent. The problem is this: the ONLY thing that matters in terms of currency is this:
Do People Like Using It? If yes, it doesn’t matter “what backs it”. But people love to overcomplicate money. “BUT I WANT MY MONEY BACKED BY GOLD!!! IT’S JUST STUPID PAPAER IF IT IS NOT BACKED BY GOLD!!!” OK…so you turn down all currency paid you unless backed by gold? I bet not. Because People Like To Use It. When the DM was reintroduced in 1948, it took off Because People Liked It. Simple as. How to control inflation, evil central banks or not: spend your money on 1) a good or 2) a service. The PRC is not the world’s largest and most dynamic economy. So too bad, Mark. The euro exists because the EU wants it to replace the USD as the reserve currency. How to control inflation, evil central banks or not: spend your money on 1) a good or 2) a service. Government is neither. Notice the sectors of economy with the highest rises in cost, like education, and medicine, are flooded with government money, what if it stopped, or was at least sharply curbed?

If the claim is that “gold has no intrinsic worth”
It begs the question. Why did the US government outlaw it? I mean, it isn’t worth anything. Right? Well sort of - they outlawed it, but they couldn’t make it worth nothing. Not the way a government can totally renege on bond payments or totally repudiate currencies. Worthless overnight. Pretty cool, huh? The beauty of gold was that it was always valuable without any regard to the government or entity that issued it. Thousands of years. No paper currency has lasted more than maybe a hundred years or so. I think the Dollar is the current record holder. Small size Federal Reserve notes starting from 1914 are legal tender (apart from any special collector value) and obligations of the government. That is remarkable, I suppose. Monetary inflation doesn’t just corrode savings, it trashes investments equally. At official “targeted” inflation rates of 2% to 3% your purchasing power is cut in half every 20 years. And you owe tax on the “gains”. Gold was honest money, that’s all. So it’s no surprise dishonest governments said “Fuck that”. Three governments outlawed gold in the 20th century. Spain was an unusual situation, they stole so much gold and silver that they had trouble finding things to do with it. Spain was in the position to set up trade with China which only wanted silver and created a glut of imported chinaware and other such things in the European market, and the Spanish crown used as much gold it could get to fight wars in Europe.
Due to the wealth of the Indies, the Spanish real was the strongest currency and it was far cheaper to import goods than to manufacture them, which is what they did. >>Why would you claim gold has no intrinsic value, yet (presumably) pieces of paper do? Seriously, are you high?
Because it doesn't. Nothing does. Are you stupid? A thing is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. Just like your house or any other object. Gold wasn't blessed by God as the basis of world trade. South Africa has by far the largest reserves of gold mines in the world. How they doing? Russia is up near the top of that list. Has Putin taken over Ukraine yet? We don't live in the 1800s anymore. Gold can be a solid investment, at times. But it is idiotic to pretend that basing the world's economy on a single metal is a solid basis for today's world. It isn't which is why nobody with any understanding of how the world economy works, other than Ron Paul who admittedly is a super genius, is suggesting that is something serious people should consider. The US dollar is the world reserve currency because of a variety factors but it has almost nothing to do with gold. Posted by: JackStraw at October 03, 2026 12:18 AM (viF8m) 210

Posted by: Cow Demon at October 03, 2026 12:06 AM (6jna9) This is a recency bias. At one point paper currency was considered impossible because of the risk of default and pre-WWI fiat was considered so inflationary that it could not be used except for closely controlled economies like Colonial India - and it was highly inflationary there. Fiat was a response to a central bank or authority not having enough cash on hand to meet demands for debt. The big one was Britain at WWI when all the gold was called in and paper issued in response, with a peg to gold at a very nice rate that the Bank of England could afford and not reflecting actual values. England would have defaulted if they had not gone to fiat, and all Keynes did was to formalize the UKs technique of staving off the default. Eventually all fiat systems have to reset due to ongoing inflation. It can be sudden like the Mongols or Argentina and Brazil, or like Paraguay and Colombia they can try to ride it out. The monetary value of gold is dependent on the exact same magical belief in it holding value that paper currency has. Gold jewelry is convenient because it's an easy material to work with, but the value holds only really because gold is expensive. Industrial uses for gold exist, but are extremely minimal due to the price of gold, so that isn't propping up high gold prices. Only thing left is rarity, which is dangerously volatile to the discovery or exploitation of new reserves. Asteroid mining projects have the potential to exponentially increase the total amount of rare heavy metals we have access to and upend the entire market. 50 years from now SpaceX might just turn gold into Zimbabwean Dollars. You are forgetting that Spain also pissed it away on fighting constantly and other government expenditure. It is a classic case of, again:
To curb inflation, spend your money on 1) a good or 2) a service. Government is neither. [ . . . ] Posted by: Cow Demon at October 03, 2026 12:10 AM (6jna9) Governments print money to spend it on themselves because if they had to shake it out of the citizenry at that amount they would have a revolt. Fiat is designed to spend on the government first, it is what it was always made to do. 1) fiat is created by a central bank 2) it is made to pay the government, not to make your life better 3) It does not matter if it is printed by an idiot or the wisest man on earth, it is not for you and your friends, it is for the government, and you get to pay for it through inflation instead of taxes. 4) Fiat causes inflation because it increases the money supply greater than it increases the things it can buy. Robbing the Aztecs and Incas has the same effect by increasing the money supply. 5) this is not a defect of gold, it is a problem of increasing the money supply, the only difference is that it is easier to do with fiat Posted by: Kindltot at October 03, 2026 12:34 AM (rbvCR) 229
Right. I’ll tell you what’s dumb, Jack.
Wages have been stagnant for Americans. since 1974. You ARE high, if you think funny money has been good for the poor, or anyone else. I can explain it for you, but I can’t understand it for you. Posted by: Common Tater at October 03, 2026 12:18 AM (J48Co) Maybe go to an ATM and scream at everybody that they need to stop using evil paper currency and should only accept gold and silver coinage? In spite of the fact that People Like Using Evil Paper Money and there is nothing you can do about it? Posted by: Cow Demon at October 03, 2026 12:34 AM (6jna9) 230

On a lighter note, we should be out of the camper in about two weeks. The house looks fantastic. Propane tank comes next week, then the countertops and tile in the shower. I need to get over there and vacuum just about everything, and do a shit ton of laundry. Can't wait until they hook up the appliances, but it's coming, at last.
A whole summer living in the camper is... nearly over. I don't think I have ever had cabin fever in the summer before! Lol. Luckily, it's a nice camper. Posted by: tcn in AK at October 03, 2026 12:39 AM (+iz5Z) 240
