9 Willowed: I've always thought "Taurus" the constellation and car, and "torus" the topological shape, should be pronounced differently. "Taurus" would employ an "ah" or "aw" sound farther back in the mouth, while "torus" would have a simple "or" sound. So the Ford TV spots years ago about "Taurus -- For Us" did not sound right.

But whadda I know, I'm just a son of a Western Canadian lady who referred to a Phillips screwdriver as a "French" screwdriver.

To me people like William Shatner and Michael J. Fox have "standard" speech. I grew up among Noo Awlins "Yats," people who talked like Brooklyn cab drivers in Forties movies, and adopted it as a second language, so to speak; a "dialect" of English. But my drama and radio background cemented my early speech training. (The "Yat" dialect is fading, though you can hear it in the suburbs to a degree.)

I have never yet met anybody, in real life or on the 'Net, Canadian or not, who referred to a Phillips as a "French" screwdriver. My mother's father was Swedish and her mother from an area that is now Ukraine, so maybe the term originated in those countries? No idea.

29 On the way to getting my hair cut yesterday, I stopped at the fuel station on the avenue nearest the river. $3.64 for regular E10, .15 less than the cheapest I've seen elsewhere and .25 less than the usual price now. They had E0, and now the pumps do not have the "May Contain Ethanol" sticker on them, but I was not tempted -- not at $4.69/gal. The Buick gets better mileage on the non-ethanol. But not 25% better.

Despite its big (by today's standards) engine, the Buick does not require or even recommend premium; the manual has zero mention of premium fuels.

An n-gram is a sequence of n adjacent symbols in a particular order.

The symbols may be n adjacent letters (including punctuation marks and blanks), syllables, or rarely whole words found in a language dataset; or adjacent phonemes extracted from a speech-recording dataset, or adjacent base pairs extracted from a genome.

And wouldn't you know it: On the way home after filling up, I saw an Exxon-branded convenience store with $3.59. Oh, well.

Is there some reason why Exxon seems to be pulling out of this market? There are still Exxon stations, but a number of convenience stores have recently stopped taking Exxon cards. Is it that Exxon charges something for a franchise operator to use their fuel and their name, and the chains are economizing? Or is Exxon abandoning this market?

45 Morning all. Gonna try to grab an hour or so before the second alarm goes off because my sleep is all messed up today.

Will it work? Who the eff knows, I'm sleepy but not falling asleep....

Been working on a personal code project with lots of AI help. It's going well, but I better understand both the allure and the trap of vibe coding. The initial code worked for a specific situation, needed to be tuned, got the tuning done and decided it needed to be refactored, and now the free version of the AI keeps losing context after minutes, so it's a real struggle to refactor into proper classes, methods, instances, etc for modularity and maintainability. (maybe once I have a job I can subscribe to one of the code-AIs and make an actual persistent session with project files).

They want money. They're getting paid, but they want Elon Musk money. For that, they need take their company public in an Initial Public Offering (IPO), so it has tradeable stock that it can give them to sell.

However, in order to keep up with the LLM Joneses, they are setting a lot of cash on fire per year (burn rate) in constant capital expenditures (capex), since their industry doesn't build such durable infrastructure as a railroad. They're constantly having to improve their models, and the data centers are full of solid-state memory (faster than traditional hard drives) that wears hard with all the read/write cycles.

If they can convince the Feds to put a regulator over them, then they are sufficiently wealthy and well-connected to make sure that it will be staffed as an amenable authority, that will order them to do what they wish they could: stop spending so much.

The pretext for the order would be to save the world from being destroyed by the uncontrollable power of their tech. The actual purpose and result would be to stanch the capex burn rate, so they get rich as Croseus on the IPO.

62 @FenelonSpoke: The XBOX is a computer gaming system. Basically, it's a specialized little computer optimized to play games that are sold specifically for that system by Microsoft. Earlier versions used DVD discs that the game came on, but now everything is streaming so probably not anymore.

They come with game controllers instead of a keyboard and mouse, and I guess those things are popular, but I always found they made my hands cramp up after using them longer than 30 minutes.

I much prefer a general-purpose computer with keyboard and mouse for my gaming, and everything else I want to do on a computer.

The Microsoft Xbox is a video game console, like the Sony Playstation or Nintendo Wii. Having a common little appliance devoted to graphics and sound theoretically makes it cheaper for gamers -- and simpler for game developers -- than the endless variety of home computers with different motherboards, graphics cards, and operating systems.

In practice, developers have to make for the computer market anyway; and on the flip side, the Steam software platform has simplified that for developers anyway. And also, the consoles do not have as much of a price advantage anymore; as computer hardware gets commodified and console gamers expect computer-like power, their cost and capabilities tend to converge.

So, an "Xbox game" is often just a dumbed-down computer game that doesn't assume the user has a keyboard. That is also true of the Playstation, but Nintendo has an institutional habit of innovating control devices, to make genuinely novel games that use inputs that computers don't have.
