USPS To Put Cameras in Trucks That Scan Roads for ‘Community Safety’

The United States Postal Service is running a pilot program to put cameras in its mail carrier trucks that continuously scan roads and signs, map roadways and sidewalks, and improve “community safety,” according to a letter posted by a labor union and a statement from the agency to 404 Media. The idea is that, since the trucks are constantly traveling anyway, they can be used as a way to collect data, eventually potentially across the nation.

“The purpose of this pilot is to leverage the Postal Service’s unique ability to collect this valuable data due to the scale and frequency with which our fleet of postal vehicles travel the streets of every community across the country,” the letter, posted by NALC Branch 238 to Facebook, reads.

The letter, written by the United States Postal Service (USPS) Labor Relations to Brian Renfroe, the president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, says the USPS will partner with Next Base, a dashcam company, for the pilot. At the moment, the cameras will be used in the Washington, DC area, and will be installed on a hundred vehicles, the letter says.

Buc-ee's is kinda asshoe when it comes to trademarks and logos

Buc-ee’s and Ohio gas station chain settle trademark infringement lawsuit

Buc-ees-Lawsuit-rr.jpg

Texas-based travel center Buc-ee’s and Ohio gas station chain Mickey’s have settled a trademark infringement lawsuit over the companies’ cartoon animal logos.

On Sept. 15, Buc-ee’s and Coles IP Holdings, the parent company of Mickey’s, reached a confidential agreement during a settlement conference, according to court records. The settlement stems from a lawsuit Buc-ee’s filed in February, claiming Mickey’s cartoon moose logo is too similar to its own cartoon beaver logo.

***

The filing said that like Buc-ee’s logo, Mickey’s logo incorporates “a cartoon animal facing right with wide eyes and a smile, overlaying a round background.” It argued that the similarities between the two logos would likely cause confusion among customers.

What am I missing? What could possibly be confusing about the differences in those 2 logos?

Lake Powell water level is getting lower than usual

Why Lake Powell Keeps Dropping Through The Fall

Lake Powell rises for about ten weeks a year and falls for the other forty-two. The Rocky Mountain snowpack melts from roughly April into July, the reservoir climbs, and then the melt stops while Glen Canyon Dam carries on releasing water downstream at a rate the river cannot replace. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains why every autumn brings another run of headlines about falling water. In 2026 the pattern was unusually stark. The lake peaked on June 1, and by September 15 it had set a modern record low of 3,516.62 feet, the lowest since the reservoir first filled in the 1960s. It is still going down.

What Happens If Flaming Gorge Is Drained To Save Lake Powell

To keep Lake Powell from collapsing, water managers have been quietly draining another giant reservoir upstream, one most Americans have never heard of: Flaming Gorge. It is a bold, and increasingly desperate, move to buy the shrinking Colorado River system a little more time. As of 2026, the latest release is the biggest one yet, and it comes with a very real cost. Here is what actually happens when you drain Flaming Gorge to save Lake Powell.

Both of these articles seem to be "just the facts" style. No mention of the climate bogeyman that I could find. Refreshing.

You can never fill a bathtub if it has a 4” drain wide open sucking the water out faster than you put it in.

In the case of Lake Powell, there are three wide open drains - Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Looks like leap seconds are going to be eliminated. The CGPM, General Conference on Weights and Measures thing month is likely going to vote to eliminate them in May 2027.

The possibility of a negative leap second due to the earth's little rotation speed up starting in 2020, which likely would've crashed the internet scared them enough to do this. The earth's little speed up has abated looks like, so we wouldn't have needed one, but it scared them enough to do this.

So, UTC will then just run free, ticking at atomic rate. Otherwise, they've just kicked the can down the road on a replacement scheme.

They've raised the tolerance of the difference between UT1 (precise mean solar time) and UTC to one hour. It will take at least 500 years before that difference gets anywhere close to that, maybe 20 minute tops in 500 years.

Palm Springs has its own aquifer so historically they didn't need to drink the rivers. (Steve Sailer, of all people, wrote about this a decade or two ago.)
But these days they've been draining the Colorado River like everyone else, to refill that aquifer.

100 I think my 95yr old mother has decided she's tired of living. Acting different. Nothing is wrong with her other than some aches in her legs/back, which she's treated for. She's led a blessed life and despite burying one son she remained happy and content til now.

When you outlive your family and peers I guess it is time. She's got round the clock sitters and my brother lives nearby. Something changed in the past couple of weeks.

I'm sort of sick to my stomach with dread of what's ahead, but will be happy for her as she knows where she's going. I will probably have an ulcer soon to distract me.

USPS To Put Cameras in Trucks That Scan Roads for ‘Community Safety’
____________________________________

How this would play in a private corporation:

"Hey, boss. We're playing around with the idea of putting cameras in all out delivery vehicles to help keep the community safe."

"That's great. You have a good heart. WE, HOWEVER, do not have the funds for that. We had a net loss of $9 Billion last year. So, I want you to think about where we can make cuts."

"But, boss."

"Cuts, Howard....cuts. And, lets start with the fancy paintwork on all out vehicles. We have over 200,000 vehicles, and we pay for that red white and blue striping with the eagle's head. That costs us. Going forward, every post office gets a stencil and some black paint. The stencil says "MAIL"....that's all, and that's enough. Cuts, Howard, bring me cuts."

I think the primary issue is that Buc-ee's didn't want people to assume that it was the same brand under a different name. There are a lot of businesses that do that, especially in the restaurant business. The name is different, but there are similarities in the logo.

Burger King uses a different name in Australia (Hungry Jack's). Different name, and a logo with similarities.

Panera Bread also has locations called St. Louis Bread Co. There are logo similarities.

Denny's operates as The Burger Den and The Meltdown in different locations, but the sign color is similar.

Add to that Buc-ee's just opening up a location in Ohio last April.

I've seen girls in the ED (and one in a university clinic when I was a student) who were raped. In the university girl's case she had a needle mark on her hip from being sedated.

There are rape kits. There is shock and grief. The police are called and names given. This is rape, or what I thought of it.

This female waited 2yrs (I think) before claiming rape, after consensual sex with three frat boys. For drugs. This is prostitution in my book. She was drugged and then another group came in (from what I read). She took more ketamine to deal with the second group.

I could be wrong and she complained the next day, but I remember reading two years. This is not rape it's extortion. Maybe finding her conscious or ethics and feeling humiliated...but it was not rape in the sense people think of it. My opinion.

Thank you. Something's different when I talk to her on the phone. Can't explain it.

Her own mother also did this with back pain but ended up in the hospital. She cooperated with PT, etc, to get discharged. I flew in to care for her with a cousin who's also a RN. She got home and did not want to leave her bed (she was a very active gardener). She was simply done and died a month later.

So I've sort of seen it before. My mother is very sharp, emails daily, works on Ancestry as a hobby. Reads a lot of books and does crossword puzzles. Grocery shops online. Takes care of medical/hair appts with drivers or sitters.

We'll see but I have a feeling she's like her mother and ready to go. She's also 95yrs and the same age as her mother. I both dread this but understand how she may feel to have lost everyone her age.

It is possible to have a flat (zero intrinsic curvature at every point) torus. But a smooth embedding requires 4 dimensions. There's no way to curve a 2D surface into a torus in only 3 ambient dimensions.

However, if you relax the smoothness, you get this fractal flat torus in 3D:

https://t.ly/Qi3SA

That surface is "smooth" up to one derivate. It has tangent planes. However, it blows up at the second derivative level.

I know a guy who told a story...
He had relations with a woman, and lo and behold a year later he has summons to appear in court for child support (I think it was NY state). In the end his lawyer told her lawyer that if she didn't pull the suit, he would explain, in graphic detail how it was very unlikely he had enough "juice" left to impregnate her. The suit was dropped. In the end she got child support payments from the court from four other guys for that child...

I do believe that at some point, you are just done. My parents outlived their friends, even though my dad took up mountain running at the ripe old age of 70 and had groupies in the running community that were younger than I am. Both mom and dad had memory issues, particularly after dad's stroke, and once they gave up the running life and didn't have anyone to play cards with, I think it became clear they weren't particularly interested in much. Dad still did crossword puzzles, mom still played solitaire, they like having dinner out and all that, but, at some point, they were done.

Didn't help that dad was killed by the that damned clot shot. Mom lasted three years after that, but she couldn't entirely remember that dad was gone, so who knows? She was the memory care busybody which kept her in the mix, but eventually even that gave out.

Dad was 91, Mom was 94. That's a good run for anyone.

Now I get to pray their asses out of Purgatory into Heaven.

John Nash ("beautiful mind") and another mathematician named Kuiper (not related the astronomer after which the Kuiper Belt is named) proved that such a 3D embedding of the flat torus existed in the '50s, but had no idea what it would look like.

Then some other work in the '70s "convex integration" laid the framework for finding it.

And it wasn't until 2012 that the crazy infinitely corrugated torus was discovered and visualized.

311 I understand when you say at some point, people are just done. My father in law, a great guy, lived til age 94, but over the last couple of years he told most of his visitors that he was ready to go now. He said he liked his children and their families, but it still didn’t make up for knowing that all his own brothers and sisters, and his wife, and his friends throughout life, and his business partners, and that just about everyone he’d known was now gone.
He said he felt like the last survivor out of his group, and he never wanted to be the lone survivor.
So we mourned his death when it came, but also knew that he was ready for it and at peace,

Well, my mind has unblown and reassembled itself. The normal vector, as we think it does exist. The tangent plane is a plane, and it must have a normal in 3D space.

The "normal doesn't exist" was a misstatement in some description I was reading. What fails is any notion of derivatives of those normals and tangent vectors.

Now, what it is mind blowing about that. The flat torus is just that. It's a closed 2D surface that is everywhere flat, zero intrinsic curvature. That means a simple X-Y plane metric exists. It's still closed, but it's flat.

But that crazy smooth fractal embedding means, trying to apply the rules of the ambient 3D space to that surface breaks down. You can't get to "aha, this is a flat 2D surface" using the basic rules of vector calculus applied to that crazy thing because those derivatives blow up.

I've got to stop thinking about this, because I may indeed go crazy....

You can think of fractals as sort of introducing a concept of fractional dimensions. A number of dimensions in between whole numbers, something crazy like a 1.5D space. In some topological sense, dimensions must be whole numbers, but that fractional dimension concept "exists" in some sense.

So, a truly smooth embedding of the flat torus exists in 4D space. So what all this means is the true "minimum dimensionality" necessary to embed it is some fractional dimension in between 3 and 4.

Posted by: JQ at October 02, 2026 01:26 AM (rdVOm)

343
Another interesting thing about that flat torus embedding. While the derivatives of the tangent vector (and normal) don't exist, if you look at what's happening in the limit as you approach that "infinite corrugation", you see those higher derivatives become infinitely oscillating. They remain bounded, but just infinitely oscillation, like 1/sin(x) as you go to zero.

So, you can see this as sort an exercise of trying to cram 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag so to speak. You can take the smooth 4D embedding and try to cram it down into 3 dimensions.

You succeed, but only in that fractal, infinitely oscillating sense.

My parents were of the negative reinforcement mindset--

We (children) were *expected* to behave correctly and get good grades, do our chores, complete assigned tasks without question.

Wrong actions received punishment. Always with an explanation, so we knew *what* was wrong.

Promised myself that it would be different when I had children (which, ultimately, wasn't in God's plan for me)

Infinity. That's the root of the strangeness of all this crazy stuff. And there is a progression of infinities, see Cantor's alephs.

First there is countable infinity. That's the infinity of the integers. That is wild enough -- see Hilbert's hotel. This is aleph-0.

But with the real numbers, you take that to the next level -- see the Continuum hypothesis -- aleph-1. The infinity of the real numbers, the real line, is greater than the infinity of the integers.

Each step of additional infinity adds to the craziness.

Now, how do you get to aleph-2, the next level of infinity bigger than the continuum.

The number of points in the plane is the same as the number of points on a line, aleph-1. The number of points in 3D space is also the same.

In fact, the number of points in a infinite dimensional space, an aleph-0-D space is also just aleph-1. There are no more points in a infinite, infinite dimensional space than there are points in between 0 and 1 on the real line.

To get to aleph-2, you need an aleph-1 number of dimensions. An uncountably infinite number of dimensions.

406 >> but all rational numbers; they too can be placed into countable sets.

AS well as all "algebraic numbers". Take the square root of two. That's irrational, but not transcendental, which is another way of saying algebraic. The set of all algebraic numbers is countable.

The algebraic numbers are those that are possible roots of a polynomial of *finite degree* with rational coefficients. And the set of such polynomials is also countable.

Now, got to an infinite degree, with Taylor series notions. That gets you to analytic functions. The number of analytic functions is just the same as aleph-1.

But that is vastly smaller than the set of all possible functions.

The Ancient Greek Homos first learned the square root of 2 was irrational somewhere in the 5th century BC. It was discovered by a Hippasus, who was a member of the Pythagorean Cult.

The legend is they kept this a secret. It was too terrible, and thus we couldn't handle the truth type of thing.

The fact that there existed a number that couldn't be expressed as the ratio of whole numbers was just too terrible to contemplate. Their world was shattered.

Yeah, those transcendental numbers are uncountably infinite, yet we're aware of fewer of those than algebraic irrationals.

A sort of analogous thing happened in 1872, when Karl Weierstrass discovered the infamous function now named the Weierstrass function. It was the first fractal curve discovered, although they didn't call that for a while until that theory was developed later.

It was a function that was everywhere continuous, but nowhere differentiable. This completely shattered the notions of smooth functions.

The great mathematicians of the day were outraged, "Damn you to hell, Weierstrass!". One of them even said that if Newton (and Leibniz) had known of this, they wouldn't have invented calculus, because they would've just given up at the madness they exposed.

422 That Dirichlet Function looks like two fuzzy lines, one y =1, and then y = 0. They are fuzzy, because neither is continuous. The thing at any region, no matter how small is infinitely oscillating between 0 and 1.

But yet, since the number of irrational numbers is infinitely greater (the aleph-0 vs aleph-1 thing), the function out to be "mostly" 0.

And there's some general notions that will actually agree with that in some abstract sense.

Another class of non-analytic functions that are very useful are the so-called "bump functions". Here's the problem, you want to model something "turns on" at some point, yet want to make it smooth. A step function is the simplest, turn on a switch. But that is discontinuous.

The bump functions allow you to do that smoothly. Turn on a signal, and do it smoothly. They are continuous and smooth. Yet non-analytic.

We've mostly been talking history/philosophy of math, and not real math. But, I'm gonna do it just a little bit, so the rest of you, avert your gaze.

This is simple example of such a smooth bump function. y(x) = 0 if x = 0.

That is a smooth version of the unit step function. You'll find it is infinitely differentiable. Yet it is non-analytic. You can't build a Taylor series around it.

What those smooth bump functions show about analyticity vs non-analyticity is a global vs local thing, and that has some "deep thoughts" implications in a lot of physics.

An analytic function "leaks out to infinity". The local tells you the global. That smooth bump function breaks that. for x < 0, it's just a flat line = 0. Nothing about it predicts that behavior at x = 0.

What I mean by that is not that anything about the function blows up. It's that the behavior of the function *locally*, in a small region "leaks" out everywhere. The local tells you the global. That's the basic property of analytic functions.
