Bought two new PCs. Finally found what I've been looking for - a barebones 13900HX mini-PC that takes DDR4 SODIMMs.

For most people who don't have 256GB of DDR4-SODIMMs just sitting around that's not particularly useful, even at the discounted price of $400. But for me, when I do have 256GB of DDR4-SODIMMs, including 64GB in a dead laptop and 64GB in a dying one, it's exactly what I needed. It's two to three times faster than the old laptops - when they work at all, and nearly 50% faster on multi-threaded work that the mini-PCs I bought last year.

Do I need them? No. Do I want them? Yes. They let me keep on trucking with parts pulled from laptops I bought in 2021.

Minisforum M1-1390 for anyone interested though the US store is currently out of stock of the barebones model. It's a big little PC - 8" square, the size of the old Mac Mini before it shrank in the wash.

I don't get to use it too often these days but my 14900K laptop is a beast at video encoding. Runs as hot as an oven but it can do some multi-threaded processing with the quickness. Beats my desktop 5900X with ease.

The cooling system in the M1-1390 looks like it can handle it the heat. It will need it for sure.

That's nice and all but OpenAI and Anthropic have been having problems with unreleased models in testing, which they then never release or release after re-training to alignment.

Mensch is simultaneously selling people that American AI is unsafe and monitored while also selling Mistral as safe with monitoring.

Which works as long as nobody knows the kind of crazy shit Mistral's models have done in their free time, which Mensch has no plans of revealing to anybody but French and EU regulators who have agreed to also keep their mouths shut.

While our guys are retards, at least they are being somewhat transparent about their retardedness while the EU and China are going the 'stay silent rather than remove all doubt' route.

62 Speaking of miniforum, I just picked up an ms-01 i9 unit and maxed it out with memory and nvme and an rtx a2000e 16gb from ebay.

It's now part of my 3 agent setup that includes an apple m4 max with 64GB of ram and an i7 with an rtx a2000 6GB

It's primarily for working with sensitive client files and research.

It's all working pretty nicely.

69 Yesterday I went for a walk at the local Senior Center. There were all kinds of flowers there and a beautiful monarch butterfly resting on a purple flower, the name of which I didn't know. Then I took a walk through paths in the fields flanked by lots of Golden Rod which look really lovely in masses. I find it's good for me to take a break from news and go out in nature.

You might be able to find some decent deals on Apple laptops or Mac minis on Amazon, especially around Black Friday after Thanksgiving into the next week.

The processors might be older, M2s, M3s or M4s instead of the current M5s and M6s but she probably wouldn't notice any difference.

Apple rarely does sales on their own site/shops, but their partners like Best Buy and Walmart will put them on sale along with Amazon.
