Random Digit Dialing wont work anymore because you can't guaranteed the area code is tied to a landline. People get a phone number and then move five times.

In the 1990s we saw it as a blunt instrument, very expensive and time-consuming. Much better were cross-indexing primary voters with the phone book.

I get a ton of random texts, which I assume is the same thing, because people rarely answer unknown numbers, but it's still self-selecting to "shy Trump voters" are invisible.

Overall I consider getting into orbit, rather than into space, to take a good deal more thrust and maybe ISP. So the engines have to work past the parameters of earlier launches.

Corruption is endemic, and the landslides are often the result of deforestation, and the overuse of dams for hydro power that destabilizes slopes as water levels fluctuate.

When it was built, the government was more tolerant of dissent, especially in the technical/scientific fields and one of the leading scientists said that if they build it (which they did) they would also tear it down, it was only a matter of time.

One of the students at the local college published a story recently about 'stuff' and rental units. Around here, a typical storage unit will run you about $1500-2000 per year. According to the article, the average worth of the stuff in the unit is worth $2000. The median time the unit is rented is 7 years (and then the stuff is cleared out and donated to Habitat for Humanity).

So, one spends about $10.5k on the rental for shit that you give away at the end of it all.

Here's my hottest take: we are at just past peak gun collecting. Prices are going to start falling and will do so for years as the Boomers sell off their collections, and there will be more than Gen X and the impoverished Millennials can possibly buy. We saw a preview of this with slot cars and model railroading, but millions of "Dad's rifles" are going to hit the market and there will not be enough people to buy them.

Yes, but this time it is very different. China always had excellent craftsmanship, and it built to last. When dams failed, it absolutely was corruption and that signaled that a new dynasty was needed.

But Communism took it to the next level. Mao is the only emperor in history to create and *empire wide* famine. That cannot happen absent Communism.

And there is no longer any pride in workmanship, it's just garbage and what you can get for it. Family formation has collapsed as well, and Chinese society is collapsing at its most basic level.

One of the coolest structures I've visited is the Storm Surge Barrier at the Delta Works in Zeeland, Holland. It's a series of gates that can be opened and closed with a massive hydraulic system to prevent another flood condition. The Zeeland area is at or below sea level and years ago there was a massive flood that killed a lot of people.

You can tour it and see how the whole thing works. The Dutch know a thing or two about water management.

Keep an eye on the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province, China, which opened to traffic on September 28, 2025. It's exactly a year old. China was very boastful about it being the highest and longest suspension bridge in the world....for now.

China used to do epic canal building, and used water diversion with great caution. The issue is that Maoism was all about "mastering the earth" and that mean building dams all over the place, without regard to downstream effects.

Oh, and hydro power is the future! So they are now stuck with layered dams which have to keep the reservoirs high to max out electricity, but when heavy rains come, they will be overtopped, so they open the flood gates.

Only it's not one dam. It's every dam, passing the flood onto the one below it. Absolutely crazy, and they're doing this in Tibet and Nepal as well. Nepal gets hosed because it's downstream.

She's doing okay. We're going to swap out all the bedding tonight because there may be lingering poisons in it. I guess it has to be washed twice.

In terms of chemo sessions, two down, ten to go. One a week, and she's coming out of this week's infusion. Basically, we're figuring out the rhythm.

But then you got to place like the Forbidden City and see buildings that are hundreds of years old and really well built. Communists ruin everything.

Excellent movie in the Jack London "To Build a Fire" and "Call of the Wild" man and dog in the wilderness tradition.

Plot involves an ex-soldier and his retired war-dog stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash.

Good direction and acting in a minimal story with realistic stakes. Kudos to Brad Pitt.

I live about 20 minutes from the Iditarod HQ. So, yeah. It's a lot of fun, but I like the smaller races too. I live about 5 minutes from Knik Lake, where they run the Knik 100 and the Knik 200, along about Christmas time. Lots of the same mushers but a lot fewer out of state tourists. We go down and meet the mushers and the dogs, who are all beautiful and sleek. The Alaska sled dog is an odd mix of various types bred for speed and endurance. I think it would be fun to see their DNA reports.

Our two dogs were puppies in sled dog kennels that, for one reason or another, were not chosen to compete. They run, all the time, and love it. But they are also couch potatoes. And they are beautiful, too.

240 Ruby, the smaller dog, has decided that our contractor is evil. She won't leave the camper so long as they are on site. Once they leave for the day, she pees for about five minutes. That is one stubborn dog.

Meanwhile Piper (the dog, not the commenter), will go in and "greet" them enthusiastically, get into everything, and generally cause mayhem. So, she gets to stay in the camper too. But at least she will go outside to pee.

Beowulf was cool, in a hallucinatory kind of way. Ivanhoe was difficult but kinda adventurist. Grapes of Wrath was boring as hell.
