I tried using the spare capacity on my second server (the one hosting my own blog and many others, though not this one) to host development of the new blogging software and the results were... Bad. The problem was not the new software itself but Rust debugging builds, which unleash a water cannon of useless redundant writes over your filesystem, and the filesystem on the server was not prepared for that, so while those builds were running the blogs froze, usually for a second or two but sometimes for minutes.

So this morning I grabbed two of the mini-PCs I bought last year before prices went crazy (actually after they went crazy, but that particular model resisted the price increases long enough for me to grab a couple or four for less than the price of the RAM they contained), upgrade their SSDs to 4TB each (same story), and drop Ubuntu 26.04 on them. And it... All worked.

Not sure exactly how they'll perform but they're eight thousand miles away from the servers so you shouldn't see any performance issues there. I just did a disk-to-disk copy of 18GB of files and it went zoom, so that's one datapoint.

16 Before James Bond, before The Saint, Roger Moore started his career in Hollywood in the late 1950s doing guest roles on TV shows.

He had roles on 77 Sunset Strip, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Which quickly led to a regular cast role in the 1959 show The Alaskans as a swindler/adventurer type during the Klondike Gold Rush.

The Alaskans only lasted one season, but since it was a Warner Brothers show, and since the character was similar to another pair of swindling card shark cowboys, they picked Moore to replace James Garner/Bret Maverick when the time came.

Moore played the British cousin Beauregarde Maverick for 15 episodes on WB’s, you guessed it; Maverick.

Moore actually gets 16 episodes to his credit as he’d previously had a guest role on Maverick playing a rich playboy who switches places with Bret because the wealthy woman he’s pursuing doesn’t like rich men - a sort of Prince and the Pauper-type plot, without look-alikes involved.

Moore also played a rather famous character, once, ten years early. In a 1964 episode of the UK variety/comedy show Mainly Millicent, Moore played James Bond.

18 I picked up a Lenovo 11 inch Idea Tab (8 GB, 128 SSD) about a month ago so I didn't have to crack open the laptop all the time. The current street price on this one is $190.00.

Some specs: aluminum build, 500 nit IPS 2560 x 1600 screen, 7000 mAh battery/20w charge, quad speakers, Android 16. I've been using it for surfing the web, watching media, listening to music, email, texting, some very light duty office stuff and it is handled all of this without quite well.

The Lenovo skin over Android hasn't been an issue so that's a plus. The knock is you only get two OS updates and about 3 years of security updates; by then the battery will probably be croaking and I'll be on to a new one so the short update support isn't an issue. It also has Pogo pins on it for a keyboard but I haven't been able to find one.

It is something of a winner especially when compared to the cheap Chicom knockoffs and what Walmart is selling for roughly the same price. It's not as nice as my Samsung Tab S10 Lite with a trackpad keyboard I keep in the glove box of the car which will now set you back about $600 with keyboard (if you can get them on sale it's possible to pick up these up for $300).

My first experience was a few days before Christmas in '89. Snow fell steadily that morning, the last work day before the break. A thirty-minute commute home that morning took me two hours. People were panicking and spinning their wheels. My car was front-wheel-drive, but even I knew the rules were simple: Slow the hell down, leave a *lot more* following distance, and don't change direction suddenly. Basic rules that Swamp drivers can't follow even in the dry.

When I got to Denver, I had no trouble even with my rear-wheel-drive cars -- though I never drove in hilly or mountainous country when snow was falling or expected.

49 Come to think of it, I've never driven the Buick in snow. We haven't had any here except at the start of '25, and I stayed home for that. And when I've traveled elsewhere in it, it's been during spring or summer.

Must've been the same winter storm that hit us in '89.
That was my only White Christmas, as it snowed Christmas Eve here.

Back then, every Christmas, my family drove about two hours to other towns where my grandparents lived.

Since I'd just gotten my driver's license a few months before, and it was about 20 degrees outside (and he hated the cold), Dad thought it would be a good idea to send me out with Mom's Buick to fill the car up before we left.

So I grabbed a buddy of mine who lived several houses down and we rode off through the neighborhood to go to the gas station. All good until I had to stop at the neighborhood entrance and make a left on the the main road.

I hit the brakes and that big, heavy, Buick laughed at me and slid, and slid, and slid until the car was in the middle of the intersection. Thankfully, nobody was on the road at 6 a.m on Christmas.

I drove about 25 mph the rest of the way to the gas station and braked like I was an 85 year old lady.
Lesson learned.

I wasn't sure he still worked there , because of hadn't seen him for a while, but I guess he was working in the back. Last time I saw him up at the registers we had a nice conversation about his playing the drums in his church band which he really enjoys.

Our sales tax went from about 5% when I was a teenager to over 9% now. The only break they give you is no sales tax on groceries.

They love to add another 1% every decade, ostensibly to pay for roads and schools, which will never end because the county keeps handing out building permits for tens-of-thousands of houses in developments around town.

82 LA County sales tax is going to 10.25%. At least the bums will be healthy:

Reading about your USB dongle troubles.
If plugging it in the back of the PC doesn't help, it may as there might be a USB 3 port back there depending on how old the motherboard is, you can always try installing a network/Wifi card on a PCIe slot on the motherboard.

Those will come with a set of plastic antennas that should give you better reception, too.

Just make sure you buy a card that will fit the slots on your motherboard and it, again, depends on how old the motherboard.

Wifi cards are rather cheap, so buy an something like a Intel 'Killer' Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) card and you should get some excellent speeds pretty cheaply, probably for around C$65 or less on Amazon or wherever you get your PC parts.

If you don't want to spend that much there are plenty of cheaper cards out there that will work well.
But, make sure your older motherboard has the right slot open and can handle a newer card.
