There are musicians I'm always told that it's Settled Science that they're the greatest ever. You aren't allowed to question it. But when I listen, I think, "What's the fuss?" or "This is terrible."

In my own neck of the woods, two are Wilhelm Fürtwangler and Maria Callas. But aficionados of other genres may have that same feeling about consensus greats. Any other examples?

Callas' voice was expressive but I never cared for the tone. Her voice lacked the bell-like quality I expect for those arias. I don't tell people they are wrong about such things, I simply state my preferences. Since I don't really give a damn about their tastes beyond conversation, it's easy to walk away.

Pete plays acoustic a lot actually when he play solo. Only sometimes with the later version of the Who.

Part of it is his hearing issues (tinnitus), another part is he composes on the acoustic, not electric. Buried in the recording mix on studio albums, you will hear Pete strumming along on acoustic on a number of Who hits as well as playing lead.

Fwiw, Pinball is one of three Townsend songs he performed that night. Drowned and Won't get Fooled Again as a duet with another distinguished classical guitarist, John Williams.

Oh sure, the remaining 20 percent has its candles shining in the dark like Barber's Adagio, the second movement to Beethoven's 7th, Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts theme, and most of the soundtrack to the LOTR movies. And, of course, Bach the 18th century version of a string bass.

Some may disagree with this but they would be wrong. :-)

It is a very British movie, same as foreign audiences not always getting American Graffiti.

And the Who is a very British band, note that they stayed in England (Moon lived on the West Coast for awhile in the mid seventies after his divorce) even when taxed to death.

So the Rock Opera double studio album that the movie was based upon was a guy having a total breakdown in his life to the extent he thinks about ending it all, and decides at the last minute when clinging to an ocean rock in a storm that love was what he should be seeking, not material things.

The movie had to tighten up the action and it helped make Sting a major celebrity because of it. The Who had little to do with the movie other than John Entwistle doing the sound track (and revising his bass lines from the original studio tapes).

The movie is about a Japanese high School girl rock group. They go to London for vacation and get to play their music at a small festival.

I learned to play music I loathed playing so I can kind of deal with anything musical once. Not my bag of tea, I won't take a second drink. Spent probably too much time in record stores during my yutehood.

And some bands that are great on recordings suck as live acts and some vice versa as well.

It is a very British movie, same as foreign audiences not always getting American Graffiti.

And the Who is a very British band, note that they stayed in England (Moon lived on the West Coast for awhile in the mid seventies after his divorce) even when taxed to death.

So the Rock Opera double studio album that the movie was based upon was a guy having a total breakdown in his life to the extent he thinks about ending it all, and decides at the last minute when clinging to an ocean rock in a storm that love was what he should be seeking, not material things.

The movie had to tighten up the action and it helped make Sting a major celebrity because of it. The Who had little to do with the movie other than John Entwistle doing the sound track (and revising his bass lines from the original studio tapes).

The only way that would happen if Pete did it and he did it only once for Tommy and hated the whole process working with Ken Russell. It wasn't Ken particularly, it was the exhausting effort to twiddle and supervise all the musical talent.

Quadrophenia album was kind of a difficult period as the Who's studio, Ramport was not finished at the time and some of the recordings had a mobile studio truck outside doing the recordings. Lots of legal issues between band management, the band members themselves, and Pete trying to do essentially a solo album with his bandmates doing their parts. I suspect Pete was not interested six years later in doing that all over again like Tommy.

They revived Quadrophenia as a ballet over there which seems to be odd but probably better than a lot of dredged up crap on stage.

It is not so much that AI generates awful music; it is more because it has no literal soul in it--it is built in bits of plagiarism from all musical artists in the past, tossed into a AI blender, and spooned out as a smoothie.

Pop music has been dumbed down literally so much and processed and computerized to the point where it is about as appetizing as ultra processed food. And that is before AI got to it.

Speaking of crocs, as I was leaving the car show today, I noticed a yuuge sandstone boulder at the gate. Looked like a petrified log in it. It was not. It was a fossilized crocodile, about a yard and a half long. Could clearly see the impressions of the plates that made up its hide, plus the skull, eye sockets, and teeth. Amazing preservation. I suspect it is a Champsosaurus, not a true crocodilian, whose time period spanned the K-T boundary. In other words, they survived the big meteor that did in the dinosaurs.

Grunge was a musical moment but Rap killed it and almost all rock for a generation or so. Now with AID gone, curiously rap has dropped off the map recently on hit charts. Wonder what all that was about.

It had its moments, Roger went full on sociopath right about after Wish You Were Here. He told of a fan at some show in Canada that he lured to the stage so he could spit on him--think that was the Animals tour. And that then inspired him to do the wall. Always amused that Toni Tennille's voice is on the Wall album in One of My Turns. She says, IIRC, "OMG what a fabulous room, are all of these your guitars?

191 There is a version of O Holy Night sang by a male singer in English that I look for every Christmas. It was on a CD of Christmas songs I got in college. I can never find it but it is one of the best non choir versions of the song I have ever heard.

It also works into my particular mania where once I hear a given version of a song any other cover just sounds... wrong.

195 Speaking of Pearl Jam, I recently saw the movie "Song Sung Blue" about a couple who were part of a Neil Diamond tribute band. They became so big locally that when Pearl Jam toured Wisconsin they were asked to open for them. Fun scene with young Eddie Vedder jamming with the band.
