Abandoned plans for a city across from San Francisco.

Developers planned a city of 30,000 people in the hills directly across the Golden Gate from San Francisco

Two Spanish-tiled stucco gateposts once stood at the mouth of Tennessee Valley in Marin County, opening onto nothing at all.
Behind them a road climbed into the hills and stopped. It had been bulldozed wide enough to carry commuter traffic, because that was the entire idea. Those gates were the front door of Marincello, a city of 30,000 people planned for the slopes directly across the water from San Francisco. In the mid 1960s it came alarmingly close to existing.

Modesty was not a design feature. Fifty apartment towers, hundreds of houses and townhouses, 250 acres of light industry, a shopping mall running a full mile with ornamental pools and elephant trains, and a square ringed by churches and named Brotherhood Plaza. A hotel would crown the highest hill on the property. Hart costs the twenty-year build at $285 million in 1964 dollars.
An earlier draft was madder still. The Bay Area history archive FoundSF records a scheme originally drawn up for more than 150,000 residents, which the planning process eventually talked down to 30,000.

A state appellate court ruled on 2 November 1970 that the 1965 approval could not stand and the plan would have to be lodged again from scratch. A lawyer for Gulf Oil called it silly to kill a multimillion-dollar development on a technicality. Praetzel’s answer, years later, was that the technicality in question was the law.

Walk south from the Tennessee Valley car park and the track underfoot gets suspiciously wide.
This is the Marincello Trail, which the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy measures at 2.9 miles return with 694 feet of climb. The same data gives a typical tread of 120 inches, or ten feet of graded roadway, waiting on cars that never turned up.

So we missed out another blue shithole in California, right??

The headline here omits a very important word.

Snow-covered mountains ringing a valley of wide, free-flowing roads remind Venezuelan transplants that the growing suburbs south of Salt Lake City offer what Miami can’t.
One million Venezuelans were released into the United States after crossing the Mexican border during a record immigration surge, and many shunned Miami and other longtime immigrant footholds for smaller places with less established communities — a pattern found in an exclusive Associated Press analysis of fedteral data from fall 2018 to summer 2025.
These cities and towns promised better jobs, cheaper homes, less traffic and higher quality of life, outweighing Florida’s allure of tropical weather and ease of getting by on Spanish alone.

That last sentence contains the clue as to the missing word.

Utah — known as a relatively immigrant-friendly state despite deep Republican roots and support for President Donald Trump — became a top destination for Venezuelans crossing the border, along with parts of the Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston metro areas, AP’s data show. Venezuelans also went to smaller cities including Madison, Wisconsin; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Savannah, Georgia.
It’s a pattern playing out across the U.S.: Some Cubans eschewed Florida and went to Louisville, Kentucky, and Odessa, Texas; Colombians chose the Boston and Denver areas; and Paterson, New Jersey, was the top pick among Peruvians.
These communities have both benefited from the influx of people and struggled to integrate their new arrivals.

Trump’s immigration crackdown instilled fear and made Venezuelans less visible since 2023, when arrivals peaked in Utah and in the United States as a whole. Everyone here seems to know someone who returned to Venezuela voluntarily because they feared being detained and deported or because they lost their work authorization.

Saw some pushback in the comments on Tuesday against my semi-crusade against Flock. We can respectfully disagree. But you might want to skip past this segment.

Hackers find encryption keys stored on stolen Flock camera despite company's denials — group extracts more than 27,000 clips, 1.6 million images captured in a span of 21 days from the device

Flock claims that images are only briefly stored on its cameras before being forwarded to the company’s servers, but a group of hackers determined that this wasn’t the case.
Flock says that its cameras are protected by on-device encryption, and even though a security researcher noted some flaws in its system, the company said that physical access is still required to exploit them and that the images are only briefly retained on the device before they’re forwarded to the cloud. However, 404 Media says that a hacking group called stegan0gram found out that this wasn’t the case after they took down a Flock camera positioned over a roadway and analyzed the data stored inside it.
While the hacking group failed to access the most sensitive data stored on the Flock camera, they were still able to access its Android operating system and found two storage partitions, labeled “vendor” and “media.” The latter was found to contain an encryption key that unlocked another partition containing all the media files from the camera. 404 Media said that that particular Flock camera captured about 1.6 million images across 21 days, detecting around 50,200 vehicles and, more concerningly, 11 people. There were also 27,321 video clips saved on the device — MP4 files with a 1024 x 768 resolution that lasted about a second or two.
Abilities like reading license plates and describing vehicle characteristics like color, make, and model are done on Flock’s servers, but these cameras still retain some edge AI capabilities. This includes detecting people, vehicles, bicycles, and plate-like shapes, which it then crops and sends to the company servers, alongside the original images. Although the software was found to have some facial detection capabilities, the publication said that this was the stock capabilities included in the operating system and wasn’t used by the camera.

How the American revolt against Flock cameras mirrors the Boston Tea Party of 1773

A grassroots revolt against automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, has gained momentum across the United States.
ALPRs are AI-powered cameras that capture images of all passing vehicles. The camera systems turn details into datapoints searchable by anyone with access to the information.
Today, there are more than 130,000 ALPRs on U.S. streets. And more than 5,000 law enforcement agencies use cameras produced by a single manufacturer, Flock Safety, which says its cameras have helped law enforcement agencies identify and arrest criminals and reduce crime.

As a historian of the American Revolution, I see parallels between Americans’ revolt against ALPRs and colonists’ destructive and often violent pushback to late 18th-century British rule.
If this summer’s celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding failed to inspire widespread patriotism, the increasingly bipartisan revolution against ALPRs suggests Americans have not entirely lost their rebellious spirit.

Incredible surgery!

Twin sisters conjoined at the head underwent successful separation surgery

Surgeons at a children's hospital in Missouri earlier this year successfully separated infant twin sisters who had been born conjoined at the head, hospital officials announced Wednesday.
Sisters Hiyab and Wuhbto are now recovering and undergoing rehabilitation and intensive care, more than six months after their cranial separation surgery in February, the hospital said.
The Feb. 24-25 surgery, at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, took more than 24 hours to complete and involved a team of specialists across multiple disciplines.
"It is still too soon to know exactly what their long-term development will look like but what we do know is that they now have opportunities that would not have been possible without this intervention," Dr. Joanna Kemp, head neurological surgeon at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, said in a press conference Wednesday.

Using fossilized teeth, scientists have finally taken the T. rex’s temperature — and it wasn’t too different from our own.
Researchers once thought that dinosaurs were sluggish, cold-blooded creatures. Later findings challenged that, suggesting that older dinosaurs were warm-blooded and could control their body temperature.
Most scientists agree that Tyrannosaurus rex was warm-blooded, but pinning down the exact core temperature of an extinct creature is difficult.
“We can’t just use a thermometer to do that,” said Jasmina Wiemann, a paleobiologist at Johns Hopkins University who had no role in the latest work.

In the span of just one year the townships of Gates Mills, Hunting Valley, and Chagrin Falls have all gone full nazi, and have installed Flock cameras EVERYWHERE.

My friends say that basic traffic fines for speeding start at $250.00.

Do you have any idea of how hard it is to drive 35mph on boulevard type roads. The damn things are 2 1/2 lanes wide, and one way traffic on each side.

Hell, back in youth 60mph was going slow ...

Takes all the fun out of driving it does.

I guess next week they do the door and window trim, maybe the base trim, and the electrician is coming out again to install the fixtures and finish the switching. I am guessing that the temperature implied by the mineral makeup of the critter's teeth is a tad lower than the critter's core temperature, seeing as teeth are somewhat exposed to cooling outside air. But the delta between mouth temp and core temp is likely similar in modern-day large animals, so a core temp can be inferred.

He has better care than most elderly people around. He has a staff that tends to his every whim, security guards that keep him safe, and activities that keep him as mentally occupied as he's able (and would like) to be. That's why he didn't take the opportunity to retire early and try to stay in the Senate for what he knew would be his last semi-sentient term. If he retired six years ago, he would have been dead six days after he left the Senate chamber for the last time. Boxer and Feinstein were the same way. For them, home would never be as fun as the Senate.

How fun!

We do Thanksgiving with a crowd that varies mightily by year. There is a core of folks who always attend, and then we collect strays. It's a blast.

We also do a fondue night for New Year's Eve. It's our wedding anniversary, and we do a late dinner (actually, we graze on it all evening) and then fireworks. There may also be shooting involved, and other forms of mayhem. Also a blast.

Folks we see often, and some only once a year. It's good for everyone.

One of the guys I used to sail with is a multi time Sunfish world champion. He moved back to St Croix where he grew up. He invented a new way to rig a Sunfish that made him really fast. The Jen's rig.

You can find used Sunfishes around here for short money. Great boats. Easy to sail and never get old no matter how skilled you get.

He was conscious but not alert nor oriented. He was not responsive. He did not speak. He did not move his legs. He gave one random thumbs up.

This is not a well person. He most likely has suffered a series of ischemic accidents. He probably needs assistance with all activities of daily living including continuous medical supervision. I would say based on this his prognosis is poor.

155 I had a good shop day too. Last week, power went out for 4 hours. Went out to start my generator-no dice. It's a ten year old inverter type. First time it failed me. Figured it was the carb, but ordered a new generator anyway. Also ordered a carb. Disassembly of the enclosed type is a pain, but I installed the new carb and it runs perfectly. Now I have 2.
The open frame generators are much easier to service, but are much louder. It's worth the hassle for the quietness.
Can't afford to be without a generator here on the NC Coast

I drove by Paramount Studios today! That area of town is trash. Everything barred up, weedy sidewalks. But you can see that beautiful Art Deco style out front and some of the interior buildings, which are Historical Buildings in their own right. TMZ says the departure is happening. 65 acres comes available in a yucky area of town. With Bass's aptitude for development, it should be a kingdom for pests and vandals in no time.

I'm kind of stodgy.

Grand Banks is absolutely still around and building gorgeous yachts. They'll have at least one yacht at the show.

We called that kind of powerboat trawlers, not as a slur, just cause that's what we called cruising powerboats. Just a habit. It's where old sailors go when they get too old to pull strings. That's why Hinckley and other started building power boats.

This is a great cruising area with the islands and other popular ports and there are tons of those boats around here.

Your area and further north are probably the best areas in the Americas for what they call shanty boats. There are Utubes of couples with, they call them shanty boat but they are attractive, and comfortable, perfect for sailing those inlets which are gorgeous and everywhere.

Well hold on to your ass, because I can read the Hieroglyphs too. Not like I used to, because after 9/11 I basically said fuck that whole area of the planet. I put the books down, stopped my reading. Still comes in handy in museums though.

248 Actually, the funniest damn thing that ever happened to me while reading hieroglyphs was at the crazy horse monument in S dakota during sturgis week. For some reason they had a king tut display. There was a replica of his chair, all decorated with hieroglyphs. I was down on one knee reading it somewhat under my breath. Something like Nebkheperure (his royal name) blah blah, lord of the 2 lands, blah blah, and when I get done I went to get up and I turned around and there was this big burly bearded biker dude behind me and looking down at me with this slight frown or maybe more like whats this asshole doing. I looked at him and said, well, thats what it says, and I kinda slid away. lol

Now that’s a real talent; impressive! I did get to where I kinda figured how cartouches worked, they’re fairly simple. Kinda embarrassed to admit that in high school, I was nerdy enough that a couple friends and I (and one GF) wrote notes to each other in Tolkiens dwarvish runes. The Elvish script looks cooler, but cursive is hard unless you can do calligraphy.

The reason California was able to do that is something we all know here, but that few in the wider public are aware of. As legitimate jobs left, California, with the state and city governments assistance, replaced them with massive federal fraud at every level. We don’t know the scope completely, but there’s a chance that 25% of SoCal’s economy is based on pure fraud of one flavor or another.

As the legitimate jobs leave, SoCal is increasingly in the position where any serious clampdown in the fraud will collapse their entire economic structure in a relatively short timeframe.

One of the scarier places I used to visit on business post 9/11. Home of the Muslim Brotherhood. Pretty lawless on the western scale. White guys don't blend that well.

If it ever calms down I would recommend you visit the City of the Dead. Giza is amazing as well of course, but there are some great places to visit around Cairo as well if you want to get the vibe of the area.

yeah the cartouches are where the royal names are. Whats not simple is that a pharaoh had 5 names and a 6th secret name. We know the pharaohs by their birth name, the name given to them by their parents, which is called the "son of Ra" name. Ramesses, Tutankhamun, Thutmose, etc, are their birth names. If on top of a cartouche you see what looks like a duck, and over the back of the duck there is a circle with a dot in the center, that is the Son of Ra name. Ramesses is easy because because the god Ra is the first part of his name. There is whats called honorific transposition, and the gods name always appears on top no matter where it appears on the name. In Tutankhamun the god Amun is spoken last but in the cartouche it would appear on top, so if you don't know that rule you'll never get the translation right. Ramesses II's royal name is User-maet-ra Setep-en-Ra, and that cartouch would not have the son of Ra symbols over it, but something different. There's a shit ton of rules in reading this stuff.

In 1997, I was tasked with setting up the company email server. While researching this "email" thing, I found stats showing that most admins would browse user mails; it was mostly harmless snoops but occasionally a stalker, creep, loser, etc. There were endless spam issues, and sometimes server exploits via the email ecosystem. Spoiler alert: It turned out that email solved a lot of problems, but steps had to be taken to curb abuse. It's kind of Flock-like.

Since we know beyond the shadow of a doubt that public cameras are here to stay, maybe we should fix the issues instead of trying to ban it, since banning new tech and new ideas has never worked.

(And apply the fixes to Ring cameras, traffic cams, security cams at homes and bussinesses, etc because they're the exact same thing, and there are currently about 60 million of them according to AI).
