Woke up an hour before I planned. Not the fault of Stirling the Great Leaping Cat, just the way things go sometimes.
If it does dry out a little this morning, it would be a good day to wash and spray-wax the car, which includes dolling up the tires with a semi-gloss spray. In cleaning out a lot of "stuff" yesterday, I found some Rain-X gel in a tube as well as a can of their spray windshield cleaner. I could try applying that to the glass and outside mirrors. Seems to me I heard an old hack for that, to use chewing tobacco (no, not actually chewed) and rub it over the glass so that rain detours around the coated area. Presuming that really works, I wonder if my pipe tobacco would do the same. Got my first application built: It's an image manipulation server to run on your local network.
I need a better AI. Had to write out a five phase prompt just to get GPT 5.6 Sol to break out a request/response model out of an XSD, that had 160ish complex types, make abstraction models in a popular language and then serializers. I gave it a head start with XSD, WSDL, CSV mapping and meta data files. It stumbled and fought through the whole thing and now looking at the output, if this was done by an intern, that intern would be fired. I used 5.4 on previous work and had passable output, though it botched the serialization so that elements were skipped or got into endless loops. Only through lots of coaxing, examples and iterative assignments did it actually work. GPT may be good for conversation, but Claude kicks its ass when it comes to enterprise grade work. According to Baylor Universities own charter: (and About page) • Train Baptist ministers and church leaders • Educate future civic and professional leaders • Promote Christian moral formation alongside academic learning • Help build the institutions necessary for a growing Texas society. By holding a rally for Screwtape on the campus of Texas' oldest university charted by the Republic that has remained in continuous operation since 1845, I would say that the current administration has completely rebuked the university's founders and original mission. "Not the first to do that
Posted by: man" Nope. I have a car made in 98 and it has an electronic oil level gauge, but it still has a dipstick. How much can it add to the cost of a $50k truck anyway? When the stupid tv screen on your dash fails you won't be able to check your oil. Posted by: fd at September 17, 2026 07:01 AM (MWfyi) 98
GM is doing away with the dipstick,"
Just as well, not needed for EV, and quite frankly I don't want today's generation of individuals opening the hood on a car. Today's GM owners are the equivalent of a military Category 4, and can only understand simple instructions through comic books. Posted by: Community Notes at September 17, 2026 07:02 AM (9s47C) 99

Maybe there is a potential market for aftermarket dipsticks.

That is a throwback to the Boomers who also had to worry about adjusting the points and regular measuring of the spark and valve gaps. Besides, given today's direct inject engines, no need to check oil. Either the car's engine will seize due to engineering and manufacturing defects or the vehicle will be repossessed before the first required oil change. Food and drink reporter Madeline Wells and her SFGATE co-workers dine at Yank Sing, in San Francisco, on Thursday, Sept, 15, 2022. Charles Russo/SFGATE After 27 years, San Francisco dim sum institution Yank Sing is closing its restaurant at Rincon Center. The final day of service at the location at 101 Spear St. will be Sept. 20, co-owner Vera Chan Waller confirmed to SFGATE. The Stevenson Street location, which opened in 1974, will remain open. ===== Sadz. This is probably the best place in the city. But that part of the culture is literally dying off. "Besides, given today's direct inject engines, no need to check oil."
If you view cars as disposable, then sure. For some people, the only time they change their oil is when they change their car. Those stupid boomers, checking their oil and greasing their ball joints. What a waste of time. Posted by: fd at September 17, 2026 07:12 AM (MWfyi) Processing 0.02, elapsed 0.0239 seconds. |
