Zuko was featured on the Pet thread twice. He was such a lovely dog, Perfect temperament, gentle and kind. He will be missed.

I looked back, and saw this note from you in August of 2023: "Recently, on our afternoon walks, he has taken to resting for few minutes beside the creek below our house. I believe he's looking for that bridge that gets mentioned here from time to time. I will continue enjoying our time together until he finds it."

Hi! Mr Aspirin Factory here.
Not pets, but an invasive species. These are Jolo spiders, orb weavers from East Asia. They are everywhere and some sizeable.
So far they are in SC, NC, GA, and FL.

Ever been bitten by one? Ever touched one?

Here's a little video to go with the photos. You can share it with the kids. Maybe they will want a pet spider for Halloween.

12 KT, if you need a name for a black cat with golden eyes, you could do worse than one I considered for Stirling: "Marlin." As in "rifle" or "game fish," not as in "1950s-1970s actor" (and his name was spelled "Marlon" anyway).

Stirling was named for a famous British race car driver of the 1950s, Stirling Moss, who drove for Mercedes in a number of races. But his name was also inspired by a city and county in Scotland, and by a pipe tobacco which at the time I'd never tried, "Stirling Flake."

It occurs to me that some of the old brands of cigarettes would make good male cat names: Kent, Winston, and Chesterfield come to mind!

I've been to Stirling. Pretty town. At the foot of the Highlands and right between and a bit north of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Like most towns over there, lots and lots of history there.

He's "Jim Eagle," as a certain mushbrained public official once had it, to my Stirling's Jim Crow, I guess. Stirling was 15.5 lbs. at his vet visit about three weeks ago.

His diet is progressing, I suppose. We tried weighing him, and without a digital scale it's pretty difficult. But he is just as energetic as he was before, and he gobbles all his food and has learned that Dagny's bowl is not going to be available at all times.

20 And my kitten has decided he's a watch cat. Husband was painting some windows outside. I don't think the cat recognized him and he hissed and puffed up his tail until he recognized him.

Yesterday, husband was trying to do something on the computer, and he didn't see in the cat in the chair behind him and sat down before the cat scratched, hissed and swiped at him. My response: "Well, how would you feel if someone who weighs 180 more pounds than you do sat on you? On second thought, maybe the cat was still annoyed about yesterday😉

I am not a “dog person.” And I am afraid of certain breeds. Like want to step back and assume a defensive posture.

I was I. The parking lot of our gun range, chatting with Mark Andrew Edwards before it opened and a guy with a rottie walked by. MAE’s forever dog was a rottie, so he immediately wanted to say hello and the owner was amenable and they got to chatting. I kept a respectful distance.

When I tell you this sweet girl looked at me and sucked me in is an understatement. She came to me slowly and leaned in and offered her head and her side and begged me to rub her chest. Her energy was off the charts sweet.

Never had an experience like that with a rottie. Or any big dog other than labs.

Her window is too hot in the afternoons for Dagny now, and she often curls up in the captain's chair at my desk. In dim light I can't see her gray fur. But when I draw out the chair to sit down, I can tell by the weight that something else is there. I perch on the edge of the chair so as not to disturb her until she decides she's too cramped and vaults away.

I don't have that problem with Stirling. He curls up atop the desk, generally when I'm at the computer. And if he is curled up in my spot on the light tan couch, even in dim light the pool of inky black fur is noticeable.

What should Crabapple weigh? If he's a big-framed cat like a Coon or a Siberian, maybe he should weigh closed to twenty, and needs to lose only fourteen or so.

26 Oh, and I have another freeloader. The sleek gray shorthair I nicknamed "Alfred" hasn't been around much. However, a brown tabby with a great deal of white, a feral male kitten, has latched onto my step as a great place to get chow. I pour a scoop of IAMS Indoor dry food into a plastic bowl and put it out. If I stand inside the closed screen door and don't move, I can watch him sidle up and start eating.

My two love to sit there and watch him. No hissing or growling, but they want to keep an eye on this interloper in their territory, I guess.

32 Last week, I wrote about kitty Ony (Fat Della could be her twin), showing her age, harder to get around, confining herself to the bedroom.

Last night Daisy the magnificent Malinois had her two cousins, Chowie and Maya, spend the night while their people, daughter and son-in-law, were out of town.

Daisy mostly sleeps out on the couch, or on the bed in the second bedroom, where she can keep a watchful eye on the driveway and random hallucinations. Guest dogs, however, insist on sleeping in the bedroom with us.

Chowie sleeps on the floor at the end of the bed, or sometimes on Daisy's mostly-unused bed in the bedroom.

Maya likes to sleep under our bed, where we have set up a bed for her. But, lately, Ony cat has been spending the night there. She also crosses under the bed to get from her cat tree (where the food is) to the water dish. Maya wants to sniff after the cat, which Ony severely dislikes.

At bedtime, Ony was ok on the high corner bench, where she can use a window sill as a bridge to her cat tree. But this morning when I got up, she was sitting in the bathroom, apparently unable to navigate the cluster of dogs.

I carried her back to bed with me. Poor kitty.🐈

What I do is to feed both cats at six a.m. and six p.m. Then I have to stand there until Dagny finishes her first third or so of the bowl, and take it up and put a pot lid atop it on the stove so the big black one can't get to it. Eventually, when I go into the kitchen, little Dagny will follow and give me The Look, and I put her bowl down again, rinse and repeat. Sometimes it takes three or four times before she finishes. I figure if I can keep the big one limited to his own portions, it'll work out.

Crabapple sounds like he needs to be fed separately from the others, and kept from their bowls until they are done. But that can't be easy to do.

When I mow the acreage, not only do I have cattle egrets following me around getting the bugs turned up, there are martins and swallows booming and zooming by nailing the insects that have taken flight. I enjoy seeing both.

39 I enjoy bird-watching swallows!

Partly because there are almost zero flying insects that make my time outdoors more pleasant.

In my neck of the woods, there are almost zero cliffs in the area. The cliff swallows have come up with a brilliant hack. Most of the overpass bridges are constructed with horizontal concrete support beams, that are protected from above by the greater footprint of the bridge deck. There are many bridges that I drive under that have HUNDREDS of swallow nests plastered into the sweet spot!

In the spring when young are in the nests, there are usually several hundred parents dipping and diving around the bridge to catch bugs.

That "ballet" is quite entertaining to me.

The worst is early in the summer when the young ones are just learning control of their flight and have a tendency to smack into you. I've had to wear protective eyeware during that period of time.

It is almost time to plant the winter wheat in Kansas, so the farmers are currently discing under the weeds or cover crop.

I swear, the flocks of cattle egrets fly around looking for the big green Deere tractors. As soon as they see one working the field, they land in his most recent pass to start feasting on wounded bugs.

51 I guess the big black and yellow spiders in the big webs around here are something other than the Jolo spiders. Look similar. Jolos look like they have longer, spindlier legs.

53 Charlie the poodle is very sensitive to the weather. I don't know if it's the air pressure or humidity or what but even when it's not actually storming he's upset. When it's actually storming, especially with thunder, he just goes crazy. This morning at 3 A.M. he got me up and we sat together for several hours.

I have NOT seen that. I am amazed that the cliff swallows seem to avoid getting hit by cars travelling at highway speeds.

In my yard in the city, we have purple martins as our swallow species, and they also seem adept at avoiding collisions.

I guess I have not noticed enough when the new birds take wing to observe bad flying.

I would definitely keep the eye protection on!

Frequently, I see a flock of 60 cattle egrets just spread out in the grass around a herd of 30 cattle.

Oh, I love Purple Martins. The coolest thing I've seen with them is the type of bird house they prefer. There is an Ice Cream/ waffle house set-up near me with all kinds of amusements (two mini-golf courses, driving range, old time arcade and various snack bars). The owner (who is a dairy farmer) set up a series of Purple Martin houses, which are on top of these really high poles (over 20 feet high). The house on each has about 20 or 30 separate entrances to what looks like apartments. They are always full in the Summer, but they migrate down to South America in the cold months...I happened to be at this Dairy bar when they returned one year, and IT WAS LOUD. It's like they were celebrating. Hilarious. And, they are one of the best bug removers on the planet. I love them.

Angus is a good name for a black cat. This one is the skinny Siamese build, runs and hides from humans but will sometime sniff a finger. Rough with a brother but not too rough if you manage to pick him up. Just starting to meow at us.

A lot of Hordefolk are leery of FB (understandably), but if you do use it visit The Chirp Corner sometime. It's videos of the poster ,often with accompanying doggo, setting out a big and varied spread of bird foods. The fun is watching who comes to dive in- my favorite so far is the orioles who have landed at the feeding station, insect in beak, to dip the bug into the cup of jelly before eating it. Of course the visitors occasionally include a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed neighbor.
