Did you know why the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has a different name than the book upon which it is based?

The previous inception of the Wonka brand came from materials licensed from the British author Roald Dahl. His classic 1964 children's novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its film adaptations are the sources of both the packaging and the marketing styles of the Wonka brand. Dahl had licensed the "Wonka" name to film director Mel Stuart. The film's producer, David L. Wolper, convinced the Quaker Oats Company to advance $3 million to finance the film in exchange for the right to use the Wonka name to sell candy bars. Quaker, which had no previous experience in the film industry, bought the rights to the book and financed the picture to promote their new "Wonka Bar." Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink made a bombshell admission this morning, disclosing that there are on-orbit weapons deployed right now to protect America's interests in space.
"Today, we continue to ensure we remain ready to meet the challenges of evolving threats, wherever they exist," Meink said during his keynote address. "This is why the United States now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action."

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called A Boat in the Woods. Joshua is a professional carpenter that gave up his day job to restore a 32 foot wooden Japanese fishing vessel built in 1966. The boat is in terrible shape and he has never restored a boat before.

A friend let Joshua set up shop for the restoration on their land (thus the name of the channel). Initially, Joshua intended to live off the grid in a cabin next to the boat and harvest lumber from the nearby forest for the restoration. That initial plan ran into challenges.

Did I mention this is in Nova Scotia? Weather is always an issue.

The first upload to YouTube was October 30, 2024 and the bulk of the almost two years has involved a little bit of boat work and a lot of surrounding logistics and weather battles. A successful YouTube channel typically involves storytelling and viewers are invested in Joshua's journey - even if the work is fixing his truck, building shelter for himself or the boat, or sourcing lumber. YouTube economics and viewer support has let him pursue this project full time.

Friends help here and there, but Joshua is tacking this project mostly by himself. It is an impressive amount of labor and he is very handy.

The channel has over 148,000 subscribers. Each video typically gets between a hundred and two hundred thousand views. He tries to post a new video each week. The most recent video shows moving the boat to a new and better location (which is an outdoor shop built from two shipping containers and lots of lumber).

The video below was posted after 18 months and gives a very good story of the struggles to that point. Much has happened since, but this is a better intro and overview. Simple but compelling content.

Yes. Went splodey for some reason. It was in an inclined retrograde orbit. This has advantages for spy purposes -- faster movement relative the surface below, and some others. Takes more energy to lob it counter Erf rotation though.

59 I am of the opinion that there have been weapons in space since we (humans) were able to lob weapons into space. We have them. The Russians have them. The Chinese have them. And so on.

Whether they work or not is about the only debatable issue.

Space is a harsh mistress. Stuff up there tends to degrade in ways not thought about. It's probably worse than we imagine.

I think most of this space weaponry would be for "space to space" combat, not orbit to ground. Things like Rods from God are way too impractical -- just too damned expensive -- you've got to heave heavy payloads into orbit. Ballistic missiles are way, way cheaper.

Now, there are some possibilities for orbit to ground weapons on a smaller scale, maybe for some sort of small targeting.

The true story behind the crossing times for the cow are a bit more uncomfortable. That particular sign is just outside the home of Mavis Kelly. Mavis, as far as anyone in that town is aware, was a nice woman. Kind, considerate, organized....and someone who REALLY REALLY REALLY liked ice cream. If Mavis had a single vice it was that she was a flirt....and, also, had a tendency to break lawn furniture at picnics due to her excessive girth. BUT, that didn't stop Herman Williams from falling for the woman. He thought she was perfect...that is, until she laughed at him when he asked her out.

Turns out Herman was responsible for signs in that municipality. He worked for the county. And, Mavis either crossed the street to get her mail in the morning, or after work. Herman was a man who didn't take chances.

That gas station pic looks like late Forties-early Fifties, or maybe a little later in the latter decade. That black car looks to be that vintage. And gas stations were still using that style of pump with the big reservoir of fuel on the top, I think. I don't recall them from my kidhood in the early Sixties.

Texaco's "Sky Chief" and "Fire Chief" brands were of the Fifties. Seems I recall reading that Texaco sponosred MIlton Berle, "Mr. Television," in the early and mid-Fifties.

92 When you think of all the shooting stars you see - a piece the size of a grain of sand or whatever - I always wondered the risk of lunar missions. Space is mostly “empty” of course but they are zooking along pretty good. A pebble would demolish all sorts of things at 5000 mph. Yeesh. There’s a lot more crap up there now, too. Our stuff.

While I’m thinking of it, Mr Musk should figure out a way to retrieve “Snoopy” and return it safely to earth. It’s the upper stage of the Apollo 16 lunar module, currently orbiting the Sun. It would be really cool to see how it has fared over 50 some years in space.

I have been shocked at how much shit they can put in your body in the course of a 2-day IV bender. When I came off the last one my body was reeling for a couple weeks as it processed all the stuff the pumped into me. I felt like Joe Biden I was so disoriented.

Those sidearms on the Soyuz have a very practical use. The Russians capsules come back on land, and there was a high possibility, if something went wrong, of landing in remote and hostile places. They did happen a time or two. It was part of the survival kits.

We always did water landings, with a big navy to recover. They do have survival kits for some contingency scenarios, but I don't what that actually entails.

Me, I'd want to carry something to the ISS if things went south with the Rooskies or something, but I'd keep it very quiet, and probably wouldn't let all the crew in on it.

Air rifle works, if feasible in your area of operations.

Rodent poison also works well for me (on the raccoons that occasionally get into my attic).

I don't believe cats would eat the baits. Don't know about dogs? I wire the baits to a joist, so the poison can't be transported out of the attic.

Perhaps you could wire some on the feeder so only RB coons could reach them?

Tater, I posted last thread that NASA just discovered a new crater on the Moon, some impact that happened in the April-May 2024 time frame. A 10-20m impactor and it made a crater about 700' in diameter.

Can you get a test for antibodies to Covid? Those are both "long covid" related issues.
There are some treatments reportedly good for dealing with Spike protein, and if you are not worried about that, try using aloe vera and DMSO on your face for the Bell's Palsy, or ask around for the best DMSO treatment for that.

One of my brothers had Bell's Palsy, a decade or so ago. I took him to ER, both us us thinking it maybe was a stroke. (Thankfully it was not!)

His face was 'lopsided' for a couple of months, but that did finally go away. I'm unaware of any meds or specific treatment-- just "wait and see" was all.

They did have survival kits, no firearms but I think they had flare guns and strobes, a little drinking water, and similar kit to what the military has for downed airmen.

Lots of cool stuff in the survival and life raft kits. Through an extraordinarily unlikely series of events, I ended up with a pen flare and a couple dozen expired cartridges. Some were duds, though most were not, and were a lot of fun.

I had Bell's Palsy a few years back. Complete recovery in due time. It's a viral nerve infection, so an Rx for an anti-viral and a corticosteroid may help a lot. They did for me. See your primary care person for treatment.

Was able to do rehab/PT exercises on my own at home (from internet search) to regain control of left side of my mouth. While recovering, the left side of my mouth would get quite chapped, so keeping Vaseline jelly handy was recommended by my primary care nurse and that helped greatly.

Worst part of the Bell's Palsy was not blinking my left eye for two weeks. That cornea is angry!

Doc said to put in eye drops and tape it shut. Did that, and it worked loose in five minutes. Had my wife do it, worked loose in ten minutes.

Had nurses try it while I was in the hospital for the afib, worked loose in twenty minutes.

The only good thing about this episode, is that I now know that I have the eyelid strength of 10 normal men!

Frankly, I would have picked a different superpower if God would have let me choose.

Starman they called it, is in an orbit with a period of about 1.5 years, with an aphelion beyond Mars orbit, and perihelion just inside of 1 au.

Now, it doesn't have an active transmitters or anything, and non gravitational forces will cause it to drift over time, but you can find some projections of where it should be via the orbital elements. The error in that will accumulate greatly over time.

Non-gravitational forces are stuff like solar wind, uneven heating and radiation and all that good stuff, where are significant for a small object.

145 My SiL's father passed away this morning from pancreatic cancer. His wife died over two years ago, and I prayed that for my SiL's sake, she would not lose both her parents in one year. God gave us two years, and a far more gradual passing than his wife. (She had MS, he was her caregiver for over two decades, and one morning she suddenly had an aneurysm.)

I know they're both happy in heaven now. But once again, I'm going to be very pregnant at an already emotional funeral. I went through an entire pocket pack last time.

I think it was a Suspense! which tend to be a little overwrought sometimes anyway. A lot of plotlines in those days were predicated on the thought that no ordinary individual would ever have the simple expedient of a firearm to protect themselves.
