While returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner tonight, the plane I was traveling in lost power as we approached the Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau.
After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly. They got us safely off the water and transported us to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where we received excellent care. Thankfully, both the pilot and I sustained only minor injuries.
God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side. An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is.

I just want to say thank you for your prayers and support.

We were incredibly fortunate, and I’m thankful the pilot and I are both doing well. The experience was a reminder to never take a single day for granted.

A Wisconsin congressman just swam out of a sinking plane in the dark and the usual crowd will treat it like weather.
Tom Tiffany was heading home Saturday night from a Lincoln Day dinner when the Beechcraft lost power on approach to Wausau. Pilot Len Boltz, retired Air Force, had seconds. The plane hit Lake Wausau. They rode the fuselage until it started going under, then they swam 100 to 150 feet to water they could stand in. An airboat pulled them out about 15 minutes after the 911 call.
Tiffany needed 12 stitches over his right eye. Boltz needed four. Both walked away. Tiffany is 68, he is the GOP nominee for governor, and he said God was watching over them. He also said the campaign does not stop.
That is not a stunt. That is a man who spent the day shaking hands, got told to buckle up because they were going down, and still showed up the next morning with a bandage and a pulse. Precious life is not a slogan when you are treading water next to a sinking Bonanza.
Pray for both of them. Then remember how fast a normal night can flip. 🇺🇸

We'd show the pilot during pre-flight, and then keep it in a rack on the flight line in case something goes sideways, they could test the fuel closely as part of any investigation.

One time we had to get fuel in rural Cambodia, someone had set it all up beforehand. At the prescribed place and time, some locals showed up in a fuel truck and pumped us up with approx. 360 gallons of their finest. Nobody (not even me) thought to test the fuel beforehand. Doh!! They sent some good stuff, and we didn't die.

I was a competitive swimmer back in the day and could easily do that. Probably could go down and back multiple times without coming up for air.

But that was then, when I was in incredible shape (training 12 months a year, etc).

Now? Well, when I swam with the sharks in Hawaii in May, I went down about 20 feet, hung out with the sharks, then surfaced. I had small snorkel fins on, which helps, but also a dive mask and snorkel tube, which doesn't.

When I was living in the islands there was a small commuter airline that serviced the islands. The entire fleet of planes were WWII float planes. It was named Antilles Air Boats.

Haven't been back in a number of years but the airport on Virgin Gorda was a trip. Dirt strip cut into the side of a hill on the ocean side. It could only handle small planes and on windy days you could feel the pilot working the winds to line the plane up right.

The Crusades, for example, started as a way to reclaim territory in the Levant that had been part of Christianity but had been overrun by Muslims, who then mistreated the Christians. In practice, it was a way for second sons to go find glory and spoils, and eventually to become kings in the Holy Land.

Yes, religion can be divisive. But in current practice, the only problems are with a "religion" that isn't really religious, but political, i.e. Islam. Once again, religion is just the excuse, not the cause.

Domestic abusers prey on the people in their own house and circle to gain a sense of power and dominance in an otherwise powerless life. They often dress it up as "for the best" or "to correct" but it is just violence against people that have no real defense or recourse. They preferentially look for easy fish, people with a history of abuse, abandonment or being exploited and isolated. People who won't fight back because abusers at the very base are cowards who fear having the shit kicked out of them by an angry mob of family or neigbbors.
