Added preliminary support for Modula-2 and Oberon to my Pascal compiler and got started on the first five applications using my new language: An application router, a database manager, a protocol analyser, a monitoring system, and a proxy server with automated TLS (a.k.a SSL a.k.a HTTPS).

The protocol analyser immediately proved its worth. It's intended as a reference implementation of both server and client of every internet protocol known to man, to test new implementations against, calibrated against existing implementations.

It promptly found 58 bugs in my standard library, including one which crashed the built-in web server.

The compiler suite will now support Ruby, Ada, Pascal/Modula-2/Oberon, Basic, Raku a.k.a Perl 6, and a dialect of Smalltalk. None of them conforming precisely to the spec because they all enforce strict type safety and a capability-based security model - Pascal's pointers for example are typed to the object they point to, and pointer arithmetic just doesn't exist.

I'm conflicted. AI is going to develop and promulgate regardless, but there are definitely dangers.

Kinda the same thing with GoF with virii or bacteria...someone's gonna do it, and I bet lots of countries STILL have programs running full tilt.

11 Watched a good Russian movie on Tubi, Dear Comrade.
A fairly new movie about real events in 1962 in a Crimea region about a strike at a plant and a massacre that happened.
Its subtitles, and done in B&W to give it a documentary feeling I think. Very good movie.

Yeah, Pascal is still in use (Delphi, Oxygene, Free Pascal) but Modula-2 has mostly disappeared. I'm implementing all three because once you have a Pascal compiler working, Modula-2 and Oberon are just toppings on the ice cream.

The behavior of matter under such extreme pressures gets wild. These properties are so beyond anything familiar to our terrestrial experience, it's mind-boggling.

And very poorly understood. Creating these conditions in a lab to actually observe some of the theoretical predictions is impossible, really. They can get close sometimes, but it's still unknown.

Anyway, the notion of solid, liquids, gas/vapors, the big three states of matter, and then plasma as a fourth, just don't cut it at these extremes.

If you think the deep interior of Uranus, or Jupiter, or even the Sun is exotic and extreme, those are nothing compared to neutron stars. That is some truly unknown territory.

Some of the theoretical conditions inside neutron stars are indeed wild, with strange matter forms predicted under certain circumstances, even beyond just neutrons.

Apparently you can still get Turbo Pascal (with the now needed DosBox). I might give it a try for old times sake.

That last programming I mentioned was driving a laser and acquisition system (PMT, HP oscilloscope, etc.) for a supersonic free-jet expansion experiment. In 1991.

29 Nortel's Protel and Protel-2 languages incorporated Modula-2 concepts, IIRC.

That was used to write code for their switches, so you won't find (I think) find examples in the wild for general computing. Google seems to know something about it, probably due to some poor sods having to support whatever Nortel DMS hardware that's still out there processing calls.

In the UK, speed cameras ended up with tyres (tires) hung over the camera, filled with petrol (gasoline) and lit on fire.

Yeah, "deconfined quark matter", and "quark-gluon plasma". The equation of state here is totally unknown.

There's another wild notion -- "the continent of stability" as opposed to islands of nuclear stability. There's a predicted one at much higher atomic mass number than anything we've seen now. Now, go up even higher than that, > 300 - 450 nucleons per nucleus.

At that point, things are predicted to get strange. The nucleus would no longer be a nucleus as we think of it.

All we can witness is the signal a neutron star kicks out, and make our best guesses from that about what could make such a signal.

Maybe we're wrong about our assumptions to begin with, and the interior of these things is even more bizarre than we imagine. Who knows?

They call those superheavy nuclei "quark nuggets". It's a form of cold quark matter.

The density of ordinary nuclei, mass per volume, is mind-boggling -- about a trillion times that of water. The quark nuggets would be denser, not all that much, but significantly denser.

If these things exist, they could still form "atoms" as we think of, little clouds of electrons swarming around the nuggets. Up to a point. Get too much positive charge in too small a volume, and the near electric field gets too high, and there would some sort of breakdown of something.

That gets up into the Unified Field Theory range. They've already unified EM and the weak nuclear force, dubbed the Electroweak force. That happens at energies around 200ish GeV.

Now, to unify the EW with the strong (color) force, the predicted energy range is a minimum of around 10^14 GeV. That is a wee bit beyond the TeV scale. Just a little bit.

Now, go even further, quantum gravity unification. That would happen only around the Planck energy itself, 10^19 GeV.

The Planck energy ain't that much, really, relative to human scales. It's only about the kinetic energy of a passenger airliner between take-off to cruising speed. Or about the chemical energy stored in a car's full tank of gas.

Now, give a single subatomic particle that much energy. That's the Planck energy level we're talking. A single proton packing the kinetic energy of a jet airliner.

Now, imagine a particle accelerator trying to reach those insane levels. It's impossible to do that on something that would fit on the earth. All you need to do is accelerate a single proton to the energy of the jet airliner. That would be 99.999999999999999999999999999999999....99% c.

That's all. Now, trouble is, with a linear accelerator, they have to get long. So they bend it around in circular paths. Now, that acceleration gets the particles to radiating. They start losing energy via EM radiation very fast. And the faster they go, the stronger the magnetic field to bend them in that tight circle.

Run those numbers and it turns out you need an accelerator with the radius of ... the orbit of Neptune.

And that just gets you to the GUT level energy. The Planck energy would be way bigger than that.

57 As I was a passenger in a car yesterday I watched people walking around. Almost all of them ( mostly under 30) were either carrying or talking on cell phones. I can understand carrying one if you don't have a pocket
and for emergencies, but I don't really understand talking on your cell phone when going for a walk. Why not look at the scenery or talk to the person you're with?

If I'm walking for exercise, the phone stays at home or in the car. I also leave it in the car when I go into the library or any place that asks you to mute your phone. Simpler to leave it behind, methinks.

I do bring it into the grocery or on any shopping excursion, so I can total up my purchases and add the tax using its calculator. This keeps me from being unpleasantly surprised when I get to the register.

The highest energy particle ever seen to date was a proton, a cosmic ray, that hit the "Fly's Eye" detector in Utah in 1991. It's energy was on the order of 10^11 GeV, or around 10^20 eV.

It's known as the OMG! particle. That energy was about the kinetic energy of a baseball at 60ish mph. One proton with that much kinetic energy.

The OMG! particle still holds the record, but there's been quite a few more at that range detected since, call it the 10^10 GeV level.

I should clarify. The OMG! particle didn't directly hit anything on the ground in Utah, there. It hit some little molecule of N or O high up in the upper atmosphere, and produced a many miles long cascade trail of subatomic particles and radiation, which the detector detected.

The source of the OMG! particle is something of a mystery. It had to come from relatively close. Over vast intergalactic distances, it should have slowed down due to interaction with the CMB background.

So it had to be somewhere "nearby" in cosmological terms. But it came from a pretty blank spot in the sky. It could've have been steered by some magnetic fields.

Anyway, whatever produced it had to be something spectacular.

71 Doing some sandboxing of what’s going to be a field rig for commissioning and engineering for this new project.

It’s currently running on a Linux mint rig running a vm of proxmox which in turn is running VMs of opnsense, win 11 enterprise, netbox, puppy Linux and MacOS.

Everything is peppy except the MacOs vm, which is because there are no Mac intel graphics drivers, but I’ve got an amd rtx 570 coming that will fix that glitch when I fully deploy.

The rig will eventually be on a minisforum ms-01, with 3 windows VMs, a Mac vm and 3 Linux VMs, for vendors to do their remote commissioning and run netbox, artista cloud vision and host of other goodies.

72 As distasteful as flock is, they are not installing systems Willy nilly, they are being paid to do so by local governments, so the fight is really with local governments and not flock.

As always, the real villain is government.
