The Monday ONT has dialed up the wayback machine tonight with very random results.

7-Up building in Portland - 1976.

It was located at NE 37th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard in Portland's Hollywood District. The building remains, but is no longer a 7-Up building. Likewise for the Dunes Motel.

Ross Diner in Quechee, Vermont in 1995.

The diner is a classic Worcester Lunch Car from 1946. The car originally operated as the Ross Diner in Holyoke, Massachusetts. After it closed in 1990 it was moved briefly to New Hampshire, then to Quechee Gorge Village. The car has been a Foley Brothers Beer Garden in recent years, but the interweb implies that this location may be recently closed?

Army-Navy Football game in 1916 at the New York Polo Grounds. Army won 15-7.

Duesenberg Automobile Company Factory at 1501 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. 1984 photo. The building stopped operating as a Deusenberg factory in 1937.

Laurel Engine No. 1, a horse-drawn steam fire engine of the York, Pennsylvania, fire department, posed in front of the Laurel Fire Company station in 1911. The Laurel station (now part of the still-operating Laurel-Rex Fire Company House on S. Duke Street) is one of the oldest continuously used firehouses in the United States.

U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey field truck being serviced, circa 1937.

The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency and mapped shorelines, prepared tidal and nautical charts, etc. It was under the Department of Commerce before being folded into the new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1970.

US Post Office, 401 North Carson Street, Carson City, Nevada, 1940.

Construction begun 1888 and it was occupied in 1891. It housed the post office and U.S. District Court until the post office left in 1970. It later served as the Nevada State Library and now the Nevada Commission on Tourism is its main occupant.

Winterview Farm Log Cabin, near Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia (about 0.1 mile south of I-81, 1.5 miles northeast of the U.S. 11 interchange). Circa 1971. I can't definitively confirm whether it still exists.

9 Heh. For Trunk or Treat at church one year, I made up a quickie poster board and crepe paper "costume" for the back of my Rav4, so it vaguely sorta looked like a whale, and I dressed as Jonah (my beard is perfect for playing Old Testament characters) and sat in the back to hand out candy.

Some kids knew the story, some didn't. I got to get a bunch of them started on it, though.

Nothing to report on the job hunt today other than I managed to find a decent swath to apply to. Poked the 'pending update' list, no responses because of course. Inching closer to being fully approved for subbing, should be fairly 'soon', at which point I'll try to sub 2-4 days a week, leaving space for interviews for better jobs.

Radio Shack offered “Lifetime Warranty” vacuum tubes, under the Realistic brand. Radio enthusiasts loved finding these, for certain hard to find and/or expensive tubes. 1L6 was a pentagrid converter used in battery powered shortwave sets and I would read tales on the collector forums in the late 1990s of people dropping by Rat Shack to take them up on their offer. They would, and did. I thought it was kind of a dick move.

The carson city post office is very, very similar to the key west, florida post office and customs house. I believe in that time frame there were only a few approved blueprint schemes available to the federal government so likely they used the same set.

Let me tell you what has happened - I asked CBD to pause it yesterday. Here's what happened today:

I was supposed to raise $6700 to be eligible for $25K in CT state election funding. I raised $8115.

I was supposed to get 150 in-district contributors (Easton, Weston, and Redding CT). I got 184.

There were 210 total contributors - several of whom were honest-to-goodness Morons.

When I went to Hartford earlier today to submit my paperwork, the election offical was shocked to find out that I only had this campaign live for about 9 days. I cannot thank the Horde and my other supporters for contributing. My area of CT is quite blue, but someone has to run. I'm tired of talking about how bad things are and watching things get worse in these Blue States. That said, running is very, very scary. Now I know that I'm not doing this for just me. I can't let everyone down now. Thanks!

The autumnal equinox occurs tomorrow at 8:05PM EDT, or 00:05 Zulu. Less than a day of astronomical summer left. The full Moon closest to the fall equinox is dubbed the Harvest Moon, the one that shines on, shines on, and that will be Sept. 26. Look up the Harvest Moon effect, which has to do with the angle of the dangle of the ecliptic at sunset on the equinox.

It happens in fall in the southern hemisphere as well, but that's in March. It flips symmetrically across hemispheres.

And Saturn is nearing opposition as well, which will occur on Oct. 4.

Thats exactly where his lab was. The worlds first industrial research lab, and the street there was the first one in the world to be lit by electric lights. The edison monument is there. 130 ft tall art deco tower with a huge edison bulb on top thats been lit continuously since 1938. Like I said, exit 132 on the parkway, go a less than a mile down RT 27 towards Metuchen and you can see the tower lit from the highway. Turn right on christie street and takes you to the state park where the museum and tower is. I drove by it all the time. Looked pretty cool at night.

I think that what my fundraising efforts have shown me is that there are a lot of people who passionately dislike current state representation. I'll also say that if every registered Republican voted in this election, I'd win. The problem is that we're so beaten down that over time we simply can't believe things will get better. Considering that I saw the Berlin Wall come down as I watched on my TV at the time, I thought that communism would never come back. If bad ideas never die, what about good ideas? That's why there's a chance.

Now, it's possible that I don't win this cycle. I'm already committing to run in the next one in 2028 no matter what, so my name recognition could get me over the line next time - especially if the Dems go all DSA on us, which they very well might. I could still win now.

I was on a business trip when I was under 25 and I needed to rent a car. Only one company at the airport would rent to me. Don't remember which, but it was only one company...and charged me twice the rate. Didn't matter to me as the company reimbursed me for it eventually.

184 After a week on the road, I'm now safely back at Villa Gorilla. I didn't get much opportunity to keep tabs on the Horde while I was gone, hope everybody is okay.

One thing of minor interest happened. While out on a Sunday drive I saw a road-killed bear in the ditch. It was on a two-lane highway running through a game-filled forest, so it wasn't wildly improbable for it to be there, however it was the first incident of this I had ever seen.

I await the comments describing how, in your neck of the woods, you have to shovel dead bears out of the way in the morning just to get to the mailbox.

Re this ecliptic angle thing. This is the angle the ecliptic makes with your local horizon. I tend to get this mixed up and backwards no matter what, but I hope I've got it right.

At the equinox the sun is crossing the celestial equator, heading south at the fall equinox. At sunrise on the fall equinox, the ecliptic makes its steepest angle with the horizon. At sunset, after the Erf has rotated 180 degrees underneath, the ecliptic makes it shallowest angle. During the spring equinox, it's just the opposite. Shallowest at sunrise, steepest at sunset. And this flips between the hemispheres to match which season is which because the local tangent planes are upside down.

What does that mean for the full moon? Moonrise occurs right around sunset, so the difference in rise times for the Moon over a few days is the lowest it will be for the year. The difference between moonset times will the greatest and this effect increases with latitude.

And vice-versa at the spring equinox full moon. Set times will be closer together, and rise times the farthest apart.

So, the Harvest Moon effect is just that. Moonrises are very close together right after sunset over a few days.

A lot of traditional Spanish dishes apparently are based around bread as an ingredient. Either raspings fried in fat prior to adding the vegetables for stewing, or sopped in water or wine as a thickener for whatever soup or stew.
The Romans did have a type of smaller flatbread that would be used as the base of whatever was being eaten. Apparently in one famous book, the narrator mentioned that when they were travelling in the countryside and paused to eat on the road, they used the flatbread to serve the food among themselves, and ate the food, and then tore into the bread, and waggishly mentioned they were so famished they "ate the plates and table as well"

East River is brackish, quite a bit of salt in it. Fresh Hudson water from the north, but the eastern outlet is Long Island Sound (salt), the water to the south is New York Bay (salt). East River isn't really a river, more of a strait.

I was supposed to raise $6700 to be eligible for $25K in CT state election funding. I raised $8115.

I was supposed to get 150 in-district contributors (Easton, Weston, and Redding CT). I got 184.

There were 210 total contributors - several of whom were honest-to-goodness Morons.

When I went to Hartford earlier today to submit my paperwork, the election offical was shocked to find out that I only had this campaign live for about 9 days. I cannot thank the Horde and my other supporters for contributing. My area of CT is quite blue, but someone has to run. I'm tired of talking about how bad things are and watching things get worse in these Blue States. That said, running is very, very scary. Now I know that I'm not doing this for just me. I can't let everyone down now. Thanks!

I know so much about turtles, that you would die of boredom once I got started. I had 10 different Box Turtles over a 20 year period and once kept a 45 lb. snapping turtle for about a month.
The Painted Turtles, Spotted Turtles, Sliders, Wood Turtles and Musk Turtles I also kept here at various times. All released to the wild, not eaten.

DDT has been banned from "general use" in the U.S. since 1972.

It is still permissible for emergency authorization, but I don't know if that has even been triggered since '72.

Of course, under Democrat rules, the laws only apply to the little people.

When I was a kid mumble mumble years ago, Anchorage was mostly swamp, and the mosquitos were epic. Literally a curtain when you went outside. So thick you ate plenty of them. Just awful. However, I never got mosquitos bites per se, they would bite but I didn't react. My sister got welts the size of tomatoes.

They sent trucks around spraying everything with DDT. Worked pretty well, but not completely. Made life bearable.

By the mid 1970's many of the swamps had been drained for development, so fewer mosquitos and I guess we didn't miss the DDT so much.

I don't live in Los Anchorage any more, and the mosquitos out here are... epic. Need a visit from the DDT truck twice a summer or so. But, not available.

Speaking of Saturn, it's little moon Hyperion would be the quite geodetic/geospatial nightmare. It's a tri-axial potato shaped mess that rotates chaotically. Well, "tumble" is a better word that rotate. It's so chaotic that the characteristic time is only about 100 days. Unpredictable past 100 days out from any point in time.

So, calculating sunrise and sunset times and so forth would be impossible for any length of time. And talk about polar wander. The axis of rotation moves all around the surface in chaotic fashion. There is no "pole" to define geodetically. It would have to be mapped in a body frame coordinate system only, with that orientation relative to chaotically jumping around.

So, at any point on the surface, the sun might rise over there, then jump back down, then pop back up in another spot over a short time span. Then zig-zag around for a little bit, then shoot over and plunge below the horizon in some other random direction.

Landing on Hyperion would be the true test of real pilot. Quite the difficulty level. You wouldn't know where the surface would be relative to you until you got there, and then getting synced with the movement of a spot on the surface would quite difficult.

Not that you'd want to. The surface is sort of like a brittle sponge or honeycomb. And highly charged. Little sparks, little lightning bolts would hit you when you got close enough.

The Cassini probe got hit by such a discharge when it made a close approach. It didn't damage anything, luckily.

Well, I've gotten the education on turtles all right.

The San Diego Zoo used to have an incredible turtle grotto that was so soothing and fun, like a screensaver. It was a little outdoor pond, but the tank viewing area was in something like a cave, and you could see the turtles and gariels and a few fishies swimming around or resting on the ground. Spotted Pond Turtles, Chinese Stripenecks, Snakenecks. I used to take my friend's kid there, and we'd spend an hour just watching those things swim.

Some very wet springs we'd have have an outburst of baby toads at this one spot on the farm. you know, where the old hoghouse was.

I'd take some home and release them in the garden by the deck. Never saw much of them after, I think maybe the neighborhood cats weren't conducive to toad life.

I don't live in Los Anchorage any more, and the mosquitos out here are... epic. Need a visit from the DDT truck twice a summer or so. But, not available.

Forgot how time-consuming it is to make them. But there's 8 dozen in the freezer now, and another dozen to cook up fresh & share with hubby for lunch tomorrow!

Using Elmer’s Glue in place of milk in bowls of cereal, spraying hairspray on bread/meat to make it look shiny and wet, things like that are tricks used to make not very appealing food look more appealing.

347 The Elmer’s glue is a necessity, though,
If you are trying to photograph a bowl of cereal you can’t use milk, all the cereal will be a bowl of mush if it sits there for more than half an hour.

Nobody from General Mills wants to try to sell a soggy bowl of Frosted Flakes.

So you pour out a a good bit of Elmer’s glue, and then add the cereal pieces on top where you want them to make it look natural. Then you squirt out some more Elmer’s on top to make it look like milk is covering some of it.

Voila, looks like a shiny, perfect, bowl of flakes, no sogginess detected, and it’ll stay that way for the four or five hours it takes to get all of the shots you need.

351 I'd never go out of my way to run over any creature. Can't understand why anyone would do such a thing. (Except maybe tarantulas.. because I hate spiders.. but they're *protected*.. also, would be afraid some would not be smashed and would then climb on/into my vehicle.)

In Hawaii, there were always animals smashed on the road to (ex)hub's base... usually cats. Even saw several times, some a-holes cross the center line in order to hit one. B@st@rds.
