Continuing work on my software suite - I will get back to my book, I just took a detour to solve literally ever other problem first. Nothing terribly exciting added today; still porting Hack to a never-was computer and Ada to a bytecode runtime. I did add the ability to branch databases for testing - one command (and a little time, though the database never locks) and you have a copy of the entire database available for testing, that you can throw away once you're done, or split off and use standalone.

It's not a bad rule, I hope he's successful, but based on what I've experienced on my bus with kids, they just naturally get louder and more excited as they talk about things they like, and then they argue and get loud and talk over each other, and this escalates quickly.

The biggest plus I've experienced in control over the kids has been sticking with the route and giving them the consistency in driver that they both want, and need.

Y'know how kids act up for substitute teachers? The same's true for drivers. Kids want routine. If you give them that, they're a lot happier and easier to get to behave. Kids feel secure when they know the fence is there, and if they push on it, it doesn't move.

Pro-tip: Do not use the official Volvo parts diagram to reassemble your P-2 platform PCV system.

You will wind up swapping the location of two hoses, and have to disassemble the entire assembly again to swap the two hoses.

Which gives you new opportunities to drop other bolts that will fall down the front of the engine and disappear again until you re-disassemble what you just put back together again.

And each time, you get to deal with what is known as the most difficult banjo bolt on the entire engine.

There is a reason why the labor to do this is usually over $1,000.00.

I think spouse is ever hopeful 😉. But he's been doing this for about 11years, so he's used to them. Other rules are "Remain seated", keep hands to self, no eating on bus and obey bus driver."

I don't normally mind them, and Volvo usually uses them in the appropriate locations.

This particular one is on the underside of the intake on the passenger side, with minimal clearance and access. Best installed using a stubby 17mm box wrench. And the location allows for the top crush washer to fall off in the attempt, and if you did not place a rag over the alternator, the crush washer can fall into the windings of the alternator.

All together, I would rather not ever have to deal with that bolt. But events caused me to remove and install the thing four times during the fun filled event.

And the whole thing starts because of a less than 1/4 inch diameter semi rigid tube that goes from the banjo bolt to the oil trap under the intake gets brittle over time and either cracks or clogs. And if it breaks, you get wild trouble codes for Mass Air signal too low with no visible reason for it. And because the tube is inside an insulation sleeve, the break is not visible unless you do a smoke test of the system and suddenly discover smoke pouring out from under the intake on the passenger side.

54 The furry thugs are well. Stirling continues on his (to him) starvation diet; I need to weigh him to see how things are going. Little Dagny is eating all of what I give her now too. I used to leave a ilttle dry food out for them overnight. Now that I'm not, to decrease Stirling's vast intake, she seems hungrier at mealtimes.

Tomorrow I have to get blood drawn again, to check on some mildly-off readings last time. Which means no breakfast or coffee from midnight until after my 8 am appointment. I'll try to stay up later tonight and have a small snack late, then sleep later than usual, so I won't have to sit around before leaving. At least I can look forward to breakfast at a favorite diner afterward.

55 Speaking of eating out, the trip to Cracker Barrel yesterday was pretty good. It started out with strong rain, then that vanished and we had a good run out to the far side of the lake. Had to wait about a quarter-hour for a table; at 10:15 on a Labor Day morning, the place was busy. The place looked like CB used to, with the old logo and decorations. Food was good, if expensive; with OJ for Miss L., coffee for me, and two lunch plates plus tip, I got dinged close to $40. Grrrr.

Smooth traffic-free run mostly at 70 back home, too.

56 VIA, the one Volvo I've ever had, a mid-'70s 164 (?) sedan, was fun to drive while I had it. That's the one that caught fire and burned up while I was driving it in early 1985 and put me off foreign cars for quite a while. I don't think I had it long enough to do any maintenance on it myself.

Wolfus, unless there's some business you're running that we're unaware of, why do you do your taxes quarterly? Unless I'm misunderstanding and you're just estimating what you'll owe or receive after filing.

At 287,000 miles, I am fortunately able to do most of the maintenance myself. And at that hight mileage, even the PCV work is considered maintenance rather than repair.

I think this is the third timing belt, water pump and idler on the thing.

But...if you can keep up on these things, they do keep running. And as long as I'm spending less than car payments on repairs, I'm still ahead financially.

Because I don't have SS withhold anything. You can't tell them a specific amount to take out, and their minimum is 7% a month, which is for me close to $200. I'd be way overpaying the Feds in return for a big refund next year. I can put that money to use every month better for my purposes than they can. And I don't want to make a big payment in April.

So yes, I am trying to estimate what I'll owe. Earlier this year I sent them quarterly payments. Then I got my big refund -- I'd miscalculated on my 1040, quite a bit -- and saw that my SS was taxed lower than I'd thought. This year, it looks as if I'll be taxed even less.

And there's that indefinable, immeasurable thing about "liking the vehicle better than anything you could buy at present." Even if your repairs are a bit more than a reasonable car payment (that mythical animal), if you love the car, love driving it, and smile when you walk up to it, you're still ahead.

I see. I just set my SS at ten percent. We're in the twelve bracket, so I figure that's close enough. But, next year - or most of it - should be non-taxable if Trump's new rule of non-taxing SS benefits for over sixty-fives is still in force.
