46 The SS Raffaello was a lovely ship built by the Italian Line for transatlantic service. It's sister ship was the SS Michelangelo. You could see them tied up at the pier on West Street in Manhattan often in the 60s. They were not financial successes as the era of sailing to Europe was eclipsed by Boeing 707 travel.

60 I enjoy Raphael's larger crowd scenes like his School of Athens. In many of his portraits the facial expressions are a bit wooden, typical for the time and something I mention often enough. This painting is different. The expressions are natural and realistic. The skin tones are soft, pleasant. Look at the slight blush on Mary's cheek. Their eyes are lively and Mary's direct look at the viewer is riveting. The colors of Raphael's sunlit outdoor scenes are vibrant in an eye catching way. The colors here are still rich but softer, appropriate to an intimate, indoor setting.

It is a remarkable, gentle family portrait. Even without the religious aspects it would be wonderful and touching.

I think that's the wrong John. The title says St. John who was John the Apostle. Diet of locusts and honey John was John the Baptist. I initially thought it was John the Baptist because of the similarity of the ages. John in the painting has hands in a worshipful pose and a crucifix over his shoulder.

I could be mistaken.

Mary holding the Christ Child while a young John the Baptist watches and prays from the right. Mary sits in a sedia camerale (a papal chamber chair) rather than a rustic seat, blending divine holiness with human maternal warmth.

A lovely, uplifting painting, circa 1513–1514, likely for Pope Leo X. It's housed in the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy.

Didn't realize this artist also died relatively young.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, now generally known in English as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur.

Born 1483, Urbino, Italy
Died April 6, 1520 (age 37 years), Rome, Italy
Periods - Renaissance, Italian Renaissance, High Renaissance
Full name - Raffaello Sanzio
Parents - Giovanni Santi, Magia di Battista di Nicola Ciarla.
(His father a painter and poet; his mother also passed young, in 1491.)

Strong limbs, a stout trunk, lots of energy. Unfortunately, zero coordination, like her dad. Just brute force. But still, physically powerful. Her cousin is a healthy kid of the same age, but she just manhandles her when they wrestle.

You can't ever really tell when they're babies, it's always a crap shoot.

A) economics shows that one off payments generally go for paying off debt or investing, not consumption (see 2008 Bush stimulus payments).
Effect on inflation is minimal for one off payments/rebates/etc because consumption doesn't change that much on a one time windfall of a relatively small amount.

B) if the payments come from tariff income, then it is actually what economists recommend to set off increased costs to the lower end of the income distribution to the extent that tariffs took away part of that groups spending ability

C), there is NO paying down the debt period. That cannot happen until we enact far greater budget cuts as the deficit is about 1.6-1.9 trillion right now and as we have seen, a big part of that is actually a) Medicare whose taxes need to be raised and fraud eliminated, b) Medicaid which is riddled with fraud, and c) Social Security which needs either increased age to retirement, benefit cuts, or some other method.

I think Trump is using the Reagan method which according to you would be bribery in reducing tax burdens in order to put more pressure on the GOP Congress to start cutting off funny money to their own welfare clients.

Eh, that can be said for government employees as well. Why do all local governments run on salary increases for public workers--it is because they vote as their paycheck depends on it. Plus we schedule the local elections at such a time as to depress the electorate so that taxpayers often don't vote but government workers do.

I can go on to government contractors, those wanting tax cuts, etc. We could make defense a lot cheaper is a) we cut out foreign actions, and b) we go to universal conscription which eliminates the biggest bill in defense spending--payroll.

Everyone is getting some and the mythical virtuous American citizen that is not getting something is similar to Gorillas in the Mist.

Frankly, I get bemused of people posing as fiscal conservatives yet not wanting their piece of the pie cut.

As for using that money to pay down debt - that may be the case, but its undeniable that the "free money" that was handed out during covid was the primary economic factor behind the inflation we experienced.

As far as not using that revenue to pay off the debt... I'm of the opinion that the best way to eat an elephant one small bite at a time.

Tariffs currently are not illegal because Scotus in making his emergency tariffs legal, made his use of retaliatory and predatory tariffs legal. That argument won't hunt.

And no, you would have to cut 1.6 trillion out of a 7 trillion or so budget and NOT touch the trillion spent on interest. That means to even stay status quo, you will have to cut 1/3 of the federal budget and that is going to have to come from the holy triad, social security, medicare, and medicaid. Or you raise taxes (which gets tricky) because the marginal revenue decreases as the tax rate increases and you take a hit on economic growth at investors put money either abroad or in tax shelters.

Mebbe, I have been watching Japan with fascination for decades now. Its debt to GDP level is about 300-350 percent of GDP. China is not far behind. Yet we haven't seen Japan nor China collapse suddenly.

I think the marginal increase in federal debt and spurring economic growth is what is important rather than the particular size of the national debt.

Andy Jackson paid off the federal debt in 1836 and the US promptly went into a deep depression that lasted until Van Buren got kicked out of office.

Simply put, a lot of things my economics teachers taught me are apparently not true, some are partially true, and some remain to be debated. Government debt to gdp is one of those.

For anyone, I recommend Carmen and Rogoff who are economic historians and their book, This Time It's Different--they study government economic collapses during the past 1000 years or so.

Calm down. I don't personally recommend it due to poor performance of conscripts historically but needless to say, that helped keep US debt to gdp down post WWII.

Personnel costs for defense are about 40-50 percent of the defense budget roughly 400-500 billion per year. So, you face a hobbesian choice. And defense is no. 4 spending category after SS, Medicare, Medicaid, excluding interest on the debt which cannot be cut absent repudiation of the federal debt.

And as I point out, there are no painless choices here and ironically growing the economy faster than the rise in debt ratio is probably the best option right now and the most politically salable.
