Tell them it's AI.
AI has changed everything.
Imagine Flock cameras without AI. They could put cameras everywhere they wanted, and it would be essentially meaningless because they would never have the manpower to watch all the footage. So, in effect, the surveillance of those cameras was never actually there.
Before AI, they only called upon footage if an actual crime was committed and the footage was believed to be relevant to that crime.
Now, with AI, they can effectively watch all the footage, pull all the data they want from it, and compile a record of where every person has been for as far back as the data goes.
That wasn't possible before AI.
The AI we know today didn't start until 2022; that's just a few years ago, and it hasn't been able to track and build profiles on each of us until the past year or so.
So AI is what has changed.
AI is why things are different now.
AI is why they should care about surveillance now, too.

Kwik Trip is getting rid of its hot dog roller grills

A popular gas station chain across the Midwest is saying goodbye to one of its store staples.
A Kwik Trip representative tells Bring Me The News that roller grills will be removed for all of its store locations as of September 21.
For years, the chain’s roller grills have featured hot dogs, cheddarwurst and brats, and tornados, the fan-favorite rolled tortillas that are filled with cheese and meat.
The beloved snacks aren’t going away entirely, though.
“The items that were on the Roller Grill will now be on our Hot Spot moving forward,” a spokesperson confirms, adding the food will now be individually wrapped or packaged and will be more of a grab and go item moving forward.

Stupid. The person who made this decision probably doesn't even eat hot dogs.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

White after Labor Day!?!

The old commandment “never wear white after Labor Day” once felt iron clad. Now it is American style’s most cheerfully ignored relic. White is a year-round color: winter-white coats, ivory knits, cream trousers, and crisp shirts show up on runways, sidewalks, and red carpets in October as easily as they do in July. So where did this bossy little rule even come from? It was a social signal born of Gilded Age leisure, filthy cities, and a whole lot of class anxiety.

In the late 19th century, wealthy New Yorkers and other urban elites fled the summer heat for Newport, the Hamptons, or mountain retreats. There they lived in lightweight white linens, cottons, and tennis whites. Practical, because white reflects heat and hides sweat. Luxurious, because keeping it pristine required staff and time most people simply did not have. Labor Day, made a federal holiday in 1894, became the official last call for that season. Back in the city, it was time for darker, heavier clothes that could survive soot, mud, rain, and streets that were, frankly, grimy.

Those reasons evaporated ages ago. Air conditioning arrived. Modern detergents and fabrics made white far less terrifying. Coco Chanel treated white as a year-round staple in the 1920s; American Vogue started showing “winter whites” around the same time. By the 1990s, major fashion authorities had already declared the rule obsolete. Today the only distinction that actually matters is weight and texture: a slubby linen dress still screams summer, while a white cashmere sweater, wool trousers, or structured ivory coat reads autumn and winter like it was born for it.

The smarter question is not whether you can wear white after Labor Day. Of course you can. The fun question is how to make cream and ivory look intentional next to this season’s colors. Three unexpected palettes do that especially well.

Cream, olive, and cobalt blue
Cream and olive are already a classic fall pairing. See? Perfectly safe.

Want to amp it up? Cobalt is the unexpected voltage. That blue makes the cream look graphic instead of bridal and keeps olive from disappearing into “just another green.”

Brown, cream, and tomato red

This is the most immediately autumnal of the three. Cream keeps the look from turning into a pumpkin-spice cliché; tomato red keeps the browns from going muddy.

Lilac, olive green, and cream

This combination feels slightly off-script in the best way. Olive and cream ground the outfit in fall utility; lilac keeps it from looking like a field-jacket convention; cream is the quiet connector holding the whole thing together.

So wear the white. Wear the cream. Wear the ivory coat like you meant it. Labor Day is not the boss of your closet, and the best outfits this season are the ones that look like you already knew that.

It can also correlate the data of every thing and person in that data with every other camera, sensing device or existing record of that person or vehicle and its or their history and bundle it up in a real or hallucinated presentation.

THIS IS KEY. The reason the concept of "Flock Cameras" wasn't a craze before AI was that the information would HAVE to be stored, which is much less palpable to the residents of any town. You have not committed a crime, but the Govt. would have to store what had been surveiled. AI is essentially a real time acquisition and it seems more innocuous to your privacy if they can say, we are only acquiring that information and holding it in a very limited amount of time.

I find both detestable....BUT THEN...you posted this:

It means the blue is changing the vibe of the cream color from soft and romantic to bold and high-contrast. I can get more into the color theory of it if you are truly interested, or in case you need help falling asleep.

I have eaten roller dogs. Meh. I liked the ones that were spitted on long skewers arrayed around a slow-turning axle under hot lamps. Grilled, after a fashion. SCTV used one of those machines as their "satellite". Remember that?

For the record, Kwik Trip is the chain removing the dog rollers, and as shown in the video, Quick Trip (a/k/a QT, based in Tulsa) had the big balloon bun and wiener. Different companies.

Can't say for KT, but QT has a really good reputation for its gas, groceries, clean bathrooms, and well-treated employees.

Here's something I looked up tonight after reading about NIKE's financial woes.

NIKE's primary advertising agency used in the US is a firm named Wieden+Kennedy.

Take a guess at who one of their other biggest clients happens to be. Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev): Bud Lite.

We've seemed to have overlooked the advertising agency angle on all these woke companies. Sure, the client has to approve. But, the concept, production and finalization is right there with the Ad Agency.

I was flying all the time and grab and AVIS bus. At the AVIS lot a preg gal about 6 or 7 months went to grab her luggage and I grabbed it to help her.
She said she did not need my help.
I put it back on the bus and walked off with my luggage.

I can vouch for Quick Trip, I drive past three other convenience stores to buy gas (and roller dogs) at a Quick Trip. The store is clean and the people working there are friendly, polite, competent, not obviously stoned, and don't look like they were just hired directly from a prison release program or drug rehab halfway house.

The best running shoes (I’m talking distance running) are made by New Balance and Asics… both great support with plenty of room in the toe box. 179 As a redneck from many generations of refined Southern wimmen...my knowledge was of not wearing white SHOES vs cream or ivory shoes after Labor Day.

Cream and ivory clothing were fine and I have my grandmother's ivory cashmere coat (which I rarely wear as I would die if one of the grands smeared chocolate).

I've never worn white shoes since I was a little girl (in spring, after Easter, before Labor Day) or as a RN. I had enough white shoes when we wore white uniforms & own none.

It's also about fabric of no seersucker after Labor Day (or go ahead if it's hot as I don't care). No velvet after Easter (or go ahead, etc). This was what I learned at my seamstress grandmother's knee. She was fabulous and could probably design as well as Coco. The ablility to look at a dress in a magazine & make your own pattern out of newspaper is talent. For dresses, suits, coats, and evening gowns. Doll clothes, dance costumes, Christmas angel costume, and seasonal wardrobes for me from infancy to college.

She would take me with her to pick out fabric for my clothes. Taught me how to tell good fabric young.

No white shoes for me, ever.

I have a pair of white leather sandals somewhere. Haven't worn them in years but you never know. I might cull them to charity as I've been trying to clear closets off and on this summer. Mostly off is how I work.

With son and DIL coming (found out today) from FL in two weeks the house will suddenly get organized. It takes a visit to get me going since my MIL died. Now she could put me in overdrive.

I also pray they are coming to tell us they are expecting after May's miscarriage, but that might not be part of the visit. It broke my heart for them then as they were so excited.

Chevrolet had better stylists, now that's a fact. I liked my Y-Block V8, in my F100. I think Edsel probably used them for a while.

What caused trouble with those, Ford in not one of their better ideas decided that vacuum advance was so good they would dispense with the old springs and centrifugal weights part of it altogether inside the distributor. Load-o-Matic. Not necessarily a bad idea in itself, but it did not work right.

1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2 firing order, just like the Flathead, as the good Lord intended. Chevy V8 parts can be found laying around everywhere and will probably fit. Ford had too many weirdo parts, it took me 20 years probably to get everything squared away rounding up parts.

Karol Miller used to drive his 1956 Fairlane to Bonneville from Texas and set some records, he knew how to tune for maximum juice just by playing around with timing and jetting and stuff like that. I love guys that can show up in jeans and a T-shirt and blow the doors off people.

Thy weren't bad cars. Ford's mistake was introducing a new line of "luxury" autos (slotted between Mercury and Lincoln?) in a recession year. The only cars that sold well were the cheaper lines. It didn't help that Edsel's styling was way out there, either, but they might have sold OK in a boom year.

271 Wardrobe today was a Big Sky faded long sleeve tee shirt with many holes from many rose thorns. Pink tights. This was for the chore I had to do with a wheelbarrow full of peatmoss and dirt to haul down hills for my wacky husband. He must have grass in shady areas.

I told him I'd do it as it takes balance & I'd be damned if he was going to mess up his hip further over stupid grass. We had a few words about it & I won.

I showered, put on a nightgown with a robe as I also have a sinus thing and am not seeing visitors today.

When I go out in public I make an effort. If I go to Mass, fly, or go to a MD appt I dress well as, by golly, people do treat you better if you try & use mascara. The house would have to be on fire for me to look like some people in public, & even then I'd look better.

Dressing down but classy for the nursing reunion on Friday (if my sinuses are not gross & I will be mad). I could sashay big time into that pub but I won't.

You should never over dress or look like a slob & it's a pub. I know exactly what I am doing and I will dazzle them with how I have not aged a day.

278 I spent a fortune having a guy rebuild my 292, and as it turned out he didn't do shit. I was overseas at the time, and trusted him. He did (I think) put some new bearings in and piston rings but that was about it. I then spent years learning all the ins and outs of engine tuning for performance.

The first thing everyone wants to do is drop a huge carburetor on it. If you don't do anything else, this is usually a big mistake. In the case of a pickup truck, hauling heavy loads it doesn't get you anything. If you'll notice trucks in those days had really tiny carburetors. Has to do with air velocity and venturi and good fuel atomization. Starting off the line with a load of gravel at a stop light, you don't want hesitation. Those engineers were smart. If you think you know more than the people who actually designed the engine, you might be right, but that's not usually the way to bet.

I spent most of the tuning un-fucking some "golden screwdriver" mechanic or previous owner who didn't understand what he was doing. Worn out shit won't tune

Engine tolerances are weird, sometimes they cancel each other out, maybe even usually but sometimes they will "stack up" and go the wrong way.

That's where the Studebaker V8 shines. Sixes, too. Gear driven camshaft. If they get more than a degree or so of slop, the cam gear breaks a tooth, and the engine stops. But the Celeron cam gears last a long, long time, much longer than any timing chain.

The Bureau of Land Management sends its annual report up the chain. In the report is a mention that BLM is going to remove 20,000 cattle guards over the next five years.

A frantic note comes down from the White House. Why are these cattle guards being fired? Will they be retrained for other jobs? Can jobs be found for them at other agencies?

My First Rebuild was a 292 "Edsel Special" in a Ranch Wagon. It was all sludged up, and dad had devised a two-tubed pressure vessel that used air pressure (we'd just gotten our first big compressor) to spray solvent through all the galleries and the crankcase. Those engines used a clever top oiling setup, with hollow rocker shafts that passed oil into the rocker arm journals only when itty-bitty holes lined up. This prevented a common problem in some other engines, a foaming of oil in the valve covers that retarded the return to the oil pump gallery. This was once believed to be the reason you couldn't "hot rod" a Studebaker.

The trouble was that if oil changes weren't regular ('ignored'), or heavy non-detergent oil was used, those shafts and holes got blocked and the hydraulic lifters would stick. There was insufficient oil pressure in the actuators, so it caused more than just wear.

Carefully disassembling all them itty-bitty parts, just soaking them clean, and then re-oiling all the internals made the oil light go out, the missing and clicking go away, and the oil burning decrease a lot.

338 Well the chain stretches, quite a lot. Advancing the ignition timing seems like a way to compensate, but it really isn't.

If you put a breaker bar on the flywheel and move it back and forth, the distributor rotor should move back and forth with it roughly immediately.

Then they jiggered with the valve timing itself, for emissions. Even in '64, it was retarded as hell with the stock chain and sprocket set. Took me a long time to figure that out. Once they get loose on top of that, forget it. I didn't want to spend a lot of time on gear, I figured out a way to use a pie plate on the crank and a coat hanger pointer, and get the valve timing advance just so, an actual 6 to 8 degrees advance, not just guessing.

This was especially important at high altitude. By the late 60s and early 70s they had de-tuned everything so badly for emissions (NOX) a brand new pickup truck could barely haul a horse trailer. I imagine there were a lot of pissed off cowpokes out there.

339 Yeah, Y-Blocks had known oiling on the passenger side head. They used a weak oiling system.

With solid lifters and pushrods, the entire upper valve system would get starved for oil.

With a good sharp tune, and a dual exhaust Y-Blocks are a really sweet motor and sound awesome with straight pipes.

Don't know if anyone saw the fireball yet or not.

That's where the Studebaker V8 shines. Sixes, too. Gear driven camshaft. If they get more than a degree or so of slop, the cam gear breaks a tooth, and the engine stops. But the Celeron cam gears last a long, long time, much longer than any timing chain.

Ever see a Crosley engine? They had a gear-driven overhead camshaft. There was a vertical shaft in the front, driven off the crank by bevel gears, and another set of bevel gears at the camshaft. One set of gears was 3/4 reduction, and the other was 2/3. Product of those two? 1/2, so the cam ran at half speed.

GO HOKIES!!! Not sure what to expect with them. New coach (James Franklin), and he's had success turning down on there luck programs around. Not so much success beating teams he needs to beat to go on the next level. Ask Michigan and OSU. We'll see.

Also a PSU fan. They had a pre-season game against Marshall. It wasn't close. Most of the team seems to be made up of ISU transfers which makes sense considering new coach was former coach of ISU.

382 I mentioned last night that I was considering using a cutoff wheel to cut the shaft of an alternator rotor at the face of the pole piece behind the slip rings, and then drill out the shaft to weaken it so the pole piece can be pried off to free up the wire spool.

Well, it works, but it takes time. Have to refine my technique further.
