Gun Thread: Eighth Anniversario Edition!

090626 8 yr cake scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Eighth Anniversary Edition? I tell you, the time flies by. Thanks to all of you who make this a regular stop on your internet wanderings. I appreciate it bigly!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

2026 Texas MoMe!

090626 texas flag scaled.jpg

They Mome'n down in Texas!

The time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 16-17. This is the eleventh annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. A double-doozy even. A bigly double-doozy! If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event.

But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of. For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place..

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and eighty-three times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

TXMoMe veterans: please jump into the comments to encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun! What was your first MoMe like? What were you expecting? Were you surprised? Did you have a great time?

Call for Volunteers
Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival and we'll be in touch. Thank You!

RSOs from prior years: Expect an email from me soon.

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

***

NOTE TO ALL: This is a private event, held on private property, and is open by invitation only. If you have not contacted Ben Had, and received a personal invitation, you are, how do I say, not invited. Attendees: do not share the location of the event with anyone or risk losing your own TXMoMe invitation.

So with that piece of serious business out of the way, are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

23 Weasel, the Fourth Shot has been reclassified as an "unplanned lateral excursion", and, as such, should not induce shame, much less apoplexy, amongs the ancestors.

In all seriousness, folks, go watch that video again. And then again. Weasel is giving a masterclass on shooting. Watch how he settles in. His breathing. His trigger control. There is iron in his sights for all Morons to see, and coupled with Milsurp ammo, a 3" group is nothing to sneeze at, particularly since he *called* the 'flyer'.

* bows to Weasel-san *

47 As far as a range report, went out last Friday with my nephew to get his new rifle sighted in. An AR-15 style in 5.56. I forget what optic he was using but it did well at 100 and 200 yards.

I had bought my rifle out for the 200 but I only put a couple shots on paper as my windage dial decided it was not loose enough. :-)

I put it away and believed I fixed the problem when I got home.
Will hit the range the week after this one to make sure it will be ready for next month in Texas.
Reminds me, I have to cut some foam for the Pelican case for the new rifle.
And I am also in the process of recreating something that I saw someone using up in New Hampshire to cool down the barrel faster.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at September 06, 2026 07:32 PM (OF02a)

48 It is possible that the cake is now Weasel's revenge for all those 0700 Eastern Time Zoom calls he had to take from an extremely irate Ewok, berating him for the Gun Thread not out-commenting the Food Thread.

I mean, we've all seen MisHum, CBD, and even the Ewok abuse the Commentariat in return for perceived slights and/or disappointments.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at September 06, 2026 07:33 PM (0sNs1)

49 My Colt Police Positive Special is a 4" 1918 gun by serial number. It's a "rescue" gun one of my co-workers told me about that one of his neighbors had. The neighbor was an elderly man in his nineties who had to go to a nursing home. The pistol had belonged to his father and grandfather, who, like him, had been police officers. The family was going to turn in the pistol to the police for destruction since they didn't think anyone would want the thing. My co-worker brought me over to see if I wanted it. The pistol itself has holster wear and worn finish on the left side where the thumb came into contact with it. It's in good shape considering that it was carried by three generations of cops. What made it noteworthy was that the original box had survived. it was badly worn, but it still had all the original paperwork, even the hang tag. I offered $375 cash for it. The family was surprised that it was worth anything, and they gladly took my cash offer. The late Phil Schirer is correct - most police sidearms (i.e. 4" and 6" barrels) are really undervalued compared to contemporary snubbies or the large caliber revolvers. This is still true today.

70 And I am also in the process of recreating something that I saw someone using up in New Hampshire to cool down the barrel faster.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at September 06, 2026 07:32 PM

Bacon wrapped around the barrel helps it radiate heat faster.

Just sayin' - for no particular reason.

71 fraammish, did you get my reply?

Absolutely! Poor little buddy!

73 Weasel, greetings and salutations in case you didn’t see my reply in the food thread. I got the Radom p35 back on loan from my nephew since I bequeathed it to him in the first place. I’m still figuring out logistics but I’ll probably bring that one. I tend to ruminate on logistics like a dog on a bone.

74 53 "No loose sh*t!"

Your scope must have been absent from the last 8 years of Gun Threads!

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at September 06, 2026 07:38 PM

That is no "wobbly" sh*t. :-)

Everything was steady, but the screws on the windage loosened up enough where it did not click.
So tighted up and will need to see if I got the windage back to zero next time I go to the range.
Not worried about the elevation, that is locked in.

I didn't! Looking forward to meeting you and seeing you shoot!

76 62 Have you considered adopting the concept that Sir Hiram Maxim utilized so effectively in the 1880s?

Posted by: Duncanthrax at September 06, 2026 07:47 PM

The blood of my enemies coating the barrel? LOL

I understand water cooled PC's are good (I have one myself) but I do not think a water cooled bolt action is what Maxim had in mind.

77 67 Up at the hunting shack for the weekend with plans of shooting. The reality of tractors, fallen trees, chainsaws, and other random work is winning. Perhaps tomorrow.

Posted by: scampydog at September 06, 2026 07:51 PM

Good luck, scampy.

We have had nine days in a row above 100 degrees. Doesn't seem very sporting to shoot the deer while they are lying down in my creek.

So you are into organic tree farming like Weasel?

79 Oh! We will have an improvement out on the rifle range starting this year - I picked up a 12'x10' shade canopy to use. BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair)

I am bringing my 10x10 shade canopy too. And a chair or two.
Maybe even a cooler.

Let's see how much my new Jeep can hold. :-)

If you're really interested, you can buy little stick-on thermometers which change color to indicate barrel temp.
