Hot Tennessee greetings!
It's been a couple of years, and Henry is 8 now. He's doing well enough after his gall bladder removal, just takes a liver support supplement and only approved food and treats. Here he is in opposite modes - elegance and total abandonment to a vacation nap

My dog Daisy left us this past April at the age of 13. She was a very good girl and greatly missed.

Cherished Pet Morons

At present, I have three cats (plus a shy feral outdoors which accepts food every morning) and one dog. The main cat is Prince Fluff the Magnificent, a long-haired totally white cat with one blue eye and one gold. He is one of the sons in the first litter produced by my daughter's white Siamese, Miso. We allowed Miso to have three litters sired by Augie-Doggie (a ginger and white male, rescued from the streets after being dumped). All of Miso and Augie's offspring save Prince went to live with various authors of my acquaintance and a selection of author's friends.
Attached is a picture of Prince, and of my surviving dog, Benjamin. Benji was also rescued from the street; a catahoula hound mix, who bears a resemblance to my childhood family dog, Punchy. Benji also knows who is boss in the household - and it's not him. In the second attached picture, he is on the sofa being intimidated by three kittens of Miso's last litter.

No way in hell I was gonna cross into his territory to get close to him, though..

3 Don't have any pets anymore, well maybe a outside rabbit that seems to live in the bush out front.
But fakled to mention these last few weeks have been working at a new Animal Hospital in Bucks County. Put all doors and millwork in so sometime soon maybe a link to it when it opens.

As I've said before, we wouldn't have gone out and got a Malinois on purpose, but she adopted us. High energy, indeed, although she has begun to be a little less puppy wild. Smart. Knows what she wants and when she wants it.

Finds her own fun in the toy box and no longer chews up shoes, furniture, and window sills. Knows when we've laid down our forks and demands a game of fetch right away. (Hey! I'm still drinking coffee here!) Runs like a hurricane after those tennis balls. And squirrels and deer when she can.

Also incredibly loud. Hearty barking for strangers. Long howls for sirens, or joining in with the coyotes. High demand for belly scratches from everyone who comes in the door. Has her own places and routines for sleeping.

She's become a real friend.

8 My hell-hound had his annual vet visit this week, which involves full sedation and a "snoot-to-tail" suite of dental cleaning, shots, blood work, nail trim, and anything else that needs to be done. This time it included treating a mild ear infection and removing a bump on his giant bony head. The grand total was just over $1800. He's a fur-coated jackass sometimes, but we do love the misfit so I guess I'll keep paying for him.

10 I didn't mention it before, but this new place came with a pet named Pete. Not sure what kind of pet Pete is, because all we have to go by is the grave marker in the backyard. And I'm not digging him up just to find out.

12 Afternoon, pet folken!

Okay, there goes Stirling the great black cat. He sleeps with me nearly every afternoon, then follows me out to the living room to sit on my lap whether or not I'm on AoSHQ. The difference this afternoon is not in him, but in little Dagny. I woke from my nap to find her on the next pillow, curled up sleeping. Unusual behavior for La Siberienne.

Stirling's trip to the Fat Farm continues. I don't know yet if the diet has had any effect on his weight. Since I don't leave dry food out for them now, Dagny has gotten less picky about her meals and devours what I give her -- so I guess I'm cutting down on what she eats too.

While they are not our pets, Mrs. Krebs says that traffic from Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds at our nectar feeders has begun to taper off. One day soon it will stop altogether and that will be another indicator that summer is drawing to a close here in Sussex county.

The bull with the big horns out on the plain looks like a classic longhorn of the kind Gil Favor, Rowdy Yates, and the drovers would have handled on their Rawhide drives. Or a wild aurochs out on a European or Asian plain.

18 No pets, just two fawns and Mom, and two very healthy hen Turkeys. All in the front yard.

Earlier in the year those two hens were guarding 13, no 11, no 7 , no 6, no 5 baby tuklings. Tough neighborhood.

19 I wish I could just let my kittehs outside by themselves to enjoy exploring, etc. like I did with every other cat we had when I was a kid.

Now I have coyotes, hawks , eagles to worry about and it would kill me if I let them out and one or both wouldn't return.

I do take them out with me but I don't want to stay out as long as they do.

A neighbor has free range chickens. They team all around. Been a while since I heard coyotes, and the foxes, bobcat, and that one mountain lion are all gone.

22 I am Auntie to a Belgian Malinois, who we suspect started life as a military dog and then Something Happened. Clearly trained early because you can leave an open bag of *really good* dog food out and he will not take a single bite. That said, he is a four-footed Engine of Chaos that has no malice in his heart. We joke that he escaped from a secret government lab because his skull is clearly made out of solid titanium. He has smacked it into my jaw enough times I am sure of this (again, with love!)

His greatest joy in life is tug-of-war. I am a favored combatant because not only can I fight him to a standstill I will also growl like he does, which, you know, only makes it BETTER. Yes, a lot of dog and a lot of high energy dog. But a love.

I empathize with you. We got this kitten from someone way off the road and he had never been and inside cat , so I can tell he's like to be outside but I'd worry about him since we are so near the road, . We also have foxes and hawks that would try to eat him.

30 The one time Stirling slid out the door, when I accidentally left it and the screen door open, he went about five feet, crouched down and froze, and cried for me. He'd fluffed out his fur so much I didn't recognize him at first. I scooped him up and he leaped out of my arms -- back into the apartment.

Dagny has never wanted to go out. In January '25 when we had the snow, Linda scooped her up and took her out in it for a few moments -- "She wants to see her ancestral homeland." Not really. Dagny let out a distressed yell as if somebody were pulling her tail, and leaped as fast as she could back into the warm living room as well.

Since then, both cats love to look out at birds or whatever might be on the lawn. But they have no real interest in going outside.

31 My big red part-Coon, Arizona, occasionally slid out the door, but then he'd freeze a few feet outside -- "This Outdoors place is BIG and SCARY!" -- and I'd come grab him.

Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat had no real fear of outdoors, and got out when Linda had the chickenpox. I put up signs around the complex and we got her back in a couple of days. Later in her life she loved walking on a harness and lead.

Little Tatiana, my first Siberian, zipped out into the hotel hallway when we were there for a hurricane in '08. She made it a game: She'd run ahead, pause and look back at me -- "Catch me if you can!" -- and as I drew nearer, would take off again. I nipped up and got her when a couple with a dog got off the elevator and made her hesitate.

But one day when I left the screen door unlatched, his brother big black Wolf went out and sprawled on the walkway in the sun. He didn't want to leave his fine home, just to sit outside for a bit. When I walked back, I found him -- and Chekov trying to work up his nerve to follow.

No cat update this week. They are all doing well. I am currently fending a kitten off my lunch. Onyx is really into human food, no matter what it is. He also likes to supervise me getting my medications together and will lay across the storage bag.

36 Big black Stirling has retired to his perch, the back of the sofa -- at the opposite end, so I can still reach him for petting. Dagny often sits there too. I have a never-used pillow at my end, so that's why they curl up down there.

39 That last photo from Piper made me laugh. It reminded me of how our three toy poodles, with a combined adult weight under 20 pounds, reacted to thunder or other 'threatening' noises. They would form a protective circle around 4'11" Mrs. JTB but would hide behind my 6'5" self. Let me know who was the priority in our house. It wasn't me.

Patsy was maybe five or six months old when I had her spayed. She was an outside cat. I decided that I just didn't want her to go back outside. I've taught her to stay back from the door and she's adjusted. She still likes to stand and claw at the glass, which might amuse the neighbors. Your kitten will adjust to being annside cat if you insist on it.

44 None of my cats have ever been nervous about thunderstorms. Oh, if a particularly loud clap sounds, they'll freeze and look toward a window, but they don't hide. It's Stirling, the once-confident kitten, who hides when he hears fireworks in the distance. It didn't happen his first Fourth of July, when he was about four months old. But on New Year's Eve of '21, at age nine months, he suddenly took a fright and slunk under the bed. Still does on those two dates.

Her Majesty is working on submitting the documentation for approval to judge more breeds. She has 8 breeds right now and is applying for Scottish Deerhounds, Beagles, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Basenjis. That would be 12 breeds down, 193 to go!!

That's why I am glad he is not 150 lbs and that he gets fed regularly. And having not had a kitten in about 13years, I forgot how much they eat! He does run it off though.
