Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. For this week, the Wheel of Hobbies (TM) is feeling lucky and decided on a painting plus theme for this Hobby Thread.

What are you hobbying?

The content may not be your favorite but give it a chance before you judge and bail out. Any adjacent hobbying is in scope, so jump in with your interests, stories and questions.

In any event, the thread is not limited to to the theme. Anything (legal) you are hobbying is welcome. Even if the theme does not speak to you, you might learn something or be entertained. If not, offer something else relating to hobbying. If all of that fails, just check in and say hello.

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. Leave politics and religion to threads elsewhere (unless your hobby is building or restoring churches). Pants? Nope. As always, puns are welcome and encouraged.

Anyone wise in the ways of hobbying with pallets? Maybe we'll do a full hobby thread pallet theme at some point. Many woodworkers repurpose scrap and pallet wood for their projects.

Does anyone know how pallets work? Do places that receive pallets send them back or throw them away or sell them or ? Is there such a think as a pallet deposit? Do hobbyists get discarded pallets from businesses or do they buy used pallets or ? If you stopped by a Home Depot and offered to take away the stack of pallets around back, would they agree or are those pallets spoken for elsewhere?

Not all pallets are suitable. Ones marked MB have been treated with methyl bromide which is a toxic pesticide. Don't use those. Instead, look for HT for heat treated.

I don't think anyone gives a first, let alone a second thought to just how important pallets are to the economy.

A project in a former life was using recycled plastics to make pallets. I expect that it, like so many others, couldn't shake an inherently conservative business. But it makes sense. Plastic pallets can't break like wooden ones.

14 Afternoon, hobby people,

This week I received two free pipes in a "Pay-It-Forward" from a pipe smoking forum I frequent. The fellow was thinning his herd and I drew the lucky random number.

One is a smooth straight apple, a "Canadian Club" (no relation to the whisky company), probably made by the famous Comoy's firm. I've waxed it and oiled the stem but haven't smoked it yet. It says "Made in London" on it, so I'm thinking an English tobacco -- though I usually reserve that for bent pipes.

The other: a Weber billiard with a rather heavy thick bowl and a sterling band. Waxed and oiled, it got its inaugural smoke with me on Friday morning with a mix of two mild burleys. Very nice session. I can see why Webers were good mid-range sellers back in the old pipe days.

IN SF fandom, years ago (and maybe still), the acronyms "FIJAGH" (Fandom Is Just a Goddamn Hobby) and "FIAWOL" (Fandom Is a Way of Life) were common. I suspect litter box maintenance, like oil changes and (once upon a time) defrosting the refrigerator, is A Way of Life.

On an unrelated hobby note, does anyone here mess with Arduinos? I had an idea for a device I wanted and sort of fell into a rabbit hole. Amazon should be delivering my starter kit any minute now.

Do places that receive pallets send them back or throw them away or sell them or ? yes. some are provided and returned; wrecked ones are thrown away; there are pallet reconditioners who will buy them in bulk, fix up, and resell (used to buy these by the truckload).

Is there such a think as a pallet deposit? dunno; maybe for the shipper-supplied ones; usually marked with the owners name (pop bottler, brewery, bakery, etc).

Do hobbyists get discarded pallets from businesses or do they buy used pallets or ? I usually pick up discards these days; often lefty by the roadside around here, as distinct from the ones kept next to the dock.

If you stopped by a Home Depot and offered to take away the stack of pallets around back, would they agree or are those pallets spoken for elsewhere? you could ask; a big user like an HD might have supplier ones (cement bags, shingles, etc), corporate-owned ones (general stuff probably in gaylord boxes), and more random ones that come loaded with larger, boxed merchandise like toilets or water heaters. mass users like HD might resell them to reconditioners.

29 Really had no idea about pallet markings nut then don't care what they are when I am done with them. Suspect those while longer life use are the treated, those who its loaded shipped unloaded and tossed are barely treated.

At my little startup we ship our product to our distributors in bulk on pallets. I'm learning more about them than I ever wanted to know.

But they are crucial to getting our product out.

32 I've picked up a few pallets from the side of the road. Some are good, some aren't. Useful for little projects that need a bit of lumber, but you don't want to pay HD or Lowe's prices. End up tossing most away after taking it apart for the good stuff.

34 Put a Diablo blade on a sawsall cut the boards off the pallets. Cut between the 2x4s and the boards - cut the nails. Punch out the nail-stubs and you have a hardwood plank.

I cut the pallet in half, use the balance planks to fill in the gaps, put casters on pallet then put plants and other stuff on the 'shuttle bench'.

Have an old carpenter's bench mounted on a roller pallet with my monitor and computer on top of the bench. When I'm finished it's rolled out of the way. Or it goes wherever (kitchen?).

A lot of outfits around here trash them. You can retrieve them, if you wanted. Some places require advanced notice, some advertise them on the socials for free.

Makes good fire starters. Or if you get several, a base for an out building.

This system streamlined space-calculations for storage and shipment of palletized product.

Most of the incoming pallets, from various sources like packaging or parts suppliers, were too flimsy for our products and so were either scrapped or sold to a reconditioner. Employees could sometimes get permission to take some home.

43 You can usually tell whether a pallet is a discard or not by the way it's places. Drive around the back of strip centers and take a look.
Construction sites, shops that take deliveries. Stopped at one he said take it all - pallets and 3'x8' sheets of corrugated metal.

I found a series of video tutorial by a guy named Jeremy Blum from like 12 years ago when he was a pimply-faced kid but he seems well organized and paces well so I bought his hard copy book. Any specific learning sources you would recommend?

46 It you're into spools, like the huge ones the telecom folks use, those too are sometimes given away free. I had one that I used outside as a work table.

Lasted about 8 years before becoming useless, and then burned.

51 My current project isn't exactly painting, but I am getting ready to stain and varnish a little wooden box that will house the "Bayou Jumper" radio I'm about to start assembling. I expect this will take some time, but I'm in no rush. I would've gotten an early start this morning, but I had to do some home repairs and yard work first.

52 I made a shooting bench from pallets. It works just fine. I also made some sitting benches. I have a method that requires a minimum number of cuts and board removal.

I get a couple of pallets every month and have a surplus. Every once in a while I'll set a stack by the road and they will be gone in a day or so.

I used to burn them in the shop in a wood burning stove. They make some good heat but it's a hassle breaking them up and they burn up fast.

It's The Brown Leaf, within the Badger and Blade shaving community. I started with the shaving forums, then drifted over to the pipe/cigar forum.

I like vintage pipes. Now that I have a sample of nearly all the shapes that appeal to me, my purchasing now tends to pipes from long-extinct but well-thought-of companies like Marx and Weber, older Dr. Grabows, etc. -- ones connected to pipe smoking history. My Marxman pot-bowl may well be as old as I am.

61 JTB, the Brown Leaf could use some new blood. Activity seems to center around "Pipe of the Day," "Cigar of the Day," and "[Current Month] Acquisitions."

We used to have an active thread called "The Codger Cabin," where one member would post images from the golden days of piping, from the 1920s up toward the present: ads for pipes and tobaccos, ad paintings featuring pipes in some fashion, and more. He knew a lot about the history of the hobby. (Did you know that Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco only dates from the late 1920s?) Alas, he seems to have fallen away from posting, not sure why. But the thread is still fascinating.

If you're into classic shaving, with double-edge blades in safety razors or with straight razors, the shaving forums are terrific too. Just be prepared with any of these that you'll wind up being tempted to spend money!

71 I have been trying and failing (so far) to design a gutter cleaning robot driven by an arduino with the help of AI. Being a complete clutz when it comes to things mechanical, it's a slog. If you are inclined any of the AIs should be able to get you started with setting up your arduino. It's WAY less difficult when you basically have a tutor telling you each step.

I do use an old Gillette safety razor that was issued to my father-in-law in 1951. He never used it after he left the Army in 1956 and it sat in a drawer until I came along. Still works great. The blades last a LONG time since I have a full beard and only shave my cheeks. Won't be spending money on other razors but do like to try different aftershaves.

79 It's not a hobby, but I figure it's close enough to qualify since I've done it for free most of my life... Just got home from my first Football broadcast at my new job. UCONN crushed Lafayette 56-7. I was Live on-air way more than I thought I would be. The technology and "on the fly" adjustments were taxing at first, but by the end of the game, I felt 10x more confident than I felt in the first quarter. Super intense, stressful, but ultimately I'm calling it a successful first day.

85 I got a new OTA TV antenna to try out for my MIL. It works not bad. I picked up a few new channels, including on broadcasting Newsmax. I didn't know Newsmax did that over the air.

I also pickup BuzzerTV better now. They show old game shows 24/7. Right now Match Game 74 is on. I kinda dig the 70s hair. And CNR.

91 I'm not a pallet expert or enthusiast, but like cardboard boxes there is a wide range of materials and quality, depending on the item it is intended for. A lot of pallets are barely worth even burning, made of indeterminate species of south american lumber and probably never intended to be re-used.

92 The desire to do hobby stuff is never stronger than when you can't. I strained the heck out of my right hand and can't pull a trigger, hold a whittling knife or a drawing pencil. I've done this before and it takes a couple of weeks to straighten out. Bummer!

However, it gives me an excuse to read more and I never lack for books.

93 I’ve used pallets for several yard projects - an exterior for mailbox post, a wishing well, storage shelves. The MB ones are great for those types discouraging arthropod and other pests. Just careful when handling and cutting. I do spray them regularly with anti-arthropod chemical warfare once completed projects as well,

It's the clamshell style. I have the plastic case it came with (surprised it survived his time in the Army.) The plastic is a bit clouded with age but is intact. The razor has a bit of verdigris on it. I should learn to clean it properly.

I have a Western Electric 6B telegraph key mounted on a base made from pallet wood, complete with nail and staple holes, improvised from the first piece of wood that caught my eye that day, I never imagined still using it 20 years later, lol
