13 The article by the Amazon HR leader about getting back to programming was interesting. I’m not a big corporate type so I don’t see the tech integration often. How people will think about using data and combining stuff out side the traditional accounting two column approach is changing so rapidly.

I am enjoying learning about it but glad my career is at a stage where I’m almost phased out anyway.

No, it's not difficult to sell on eBay, though I suppose if you had lots of items (a "store"), it could get tough to keep it all straight. You take pics of the item and get them on your computer, write up the description, then sign in to eBay and follow its "How to sell" instructions. It will tell you the fields to fill out and when to upload the pics. I kept it simple with the hats: No returns, honest descriptions. You estimate the weight of the package when it is mailed -- put it into its box and bring it to the post office to be weighed, or go to Office Depot. EBay calculates a range of shipping prices for you based on that weight and your zip code.

When it sells, you print out a prepaid shipping label, which deducts some money from your payout (but the buyer paid for it), package it up, and ship it.

Used in the 1969 film, as was a great deal of Portis's dialog. Except for its ending, the John Wayne-Kim Darby film is a very faithful adaptation of the novel, almost as much as Polanski's Rosemary's Baby was the year before.

The new movie with Jeff Bridges is faithful too, but it is drab and colorless --"ashen," as one of our commenters said about another film.

31 Fen, if you want to keep it simpler, you can pay for the shipping instead of the buyer. Just set your price a bit higher to cover it. I suppose it'll work the same: You enter the weight of the total package and the destination zip code (or eBay gets it from the buyer), and the shipping label will take care of it by deducting that from your payout.

And how efficient and optimized is that code? If the code a human designed and wrote would run in O(n) time, but the AI generated something that runs in O(n log n), or worse yet O(n^2) time, it might look okay on a single instance run but as soon as that thing has to scale up, the time delay is going to make itself felt harshly (the total runtime will be ghastly long.)

I've experienced this personally on a project (way before the days of LLM generated code.) A module written by another project team member was imperceptibly slower on a single call when used by an end-user, but when it was called repeatedly in a large-scale batch processing run, it caused the total run time of the batch to balloon from 2 to 3 hours into days. (He wasn't paying attention to the efficiency.)

It's starting to make sense why they want a ridiculous number of data centers with the obscene amount of processing power. They're willing to lean hard on the hardware layer to make up for code that is generated quickly, but is inefficient, or at least that's my guess.

Ugh. I hope I'm wrong. I fear I'm right.

The newer True Grit is a worthy adaptation, I guess. Bridges is pretty good, though he does mumble a few of the lines; the actress playing Mattie is actually close to Mattie's age; Matt Damon makes a good Texas Ranger, and Josh Brolin a good Tom Chaney. But, like so many movies nowadays, it's filmed in a drab style, and night scenes are so dark you find it hard to tell who's speaking or doing whatever is going on in the scene.

This one does give you the book's ending, though, if that's important. Personally I love the 1969 film's ending.

I actually prefer the more recent version because I always thought Kim Darby as Maddie was terrible casting. Glen Campbell too.

Brolin as Tom Chaney comes across as meaner and maybe a little mentally slow. The scene in the courthouse is great and I liked the music.

The language kept me on my toes like when they came across the hanged man and Maddie asked why they hanged him so high up in the tree and Rooster said "I do not know. Perhaps in the belief it would make him more dead."

51 My own "coding heroism" story: Working in FoxPro, I was asked to improve the processing time of a report. Digging into it, I found the programmer had set it up to compare every single record in a 1000-record table with every record in another 1000-record table. One million comparisons every time the report ran -- an hour or more!

There were only about twenty-five records that met the condition needed for the report. I set up a relation between the two tables and searched for the condition in the first table, then looked to see if the corresponding record had been found in the second. If so, do some stuff; if not, go back to the first table and search again.

The report ran in a few minutes, and I looked like a genius. (Until I got laid off, that was.)

Indeed, and the LLM probably found and fixed the bug within seconds to minutes at most.

It’s always amuses me when you give an LLM a task with verbose mode turned on and it’s says, thought for 247 milliseconds and then proceeds to provide the complex code or answer.

109 I'm not against data centers, per se, but that's a dumb thing Trump said. These data centers don't employ many people at all, and none from a given local area, unless it's already an engineering center.

There's probably some tax revenue involved, but it can't be much - these companies aren't headquartered in the far flung areas where they build them, and the data centers aren't selling products that can generate sales tax revenues at the local level.

They are not building out power infrastructure or paying utilities to do it as used to be the case with most industrial capacity, and the burden of demand is spread amongst customers.

I do not see how a data center can make a big difference in the overall wealth of some community or another. That doesn't add up.

Trymp is bullish on these data centers and he's talking his own book, but this talking point is dumb.

THIS. When going to manage my "content library" (which contains Amazon purchased books, as well as Documents uploaded via the Send-to-Kindle function), the "Docs" (Documents) portion was completely GONE.

Thankfully there's still a link on the new user interface to the old interface, at least for now, so I can still manage uploaded Documents.

Also, the new interface is missing the page selector, which lets you select a given index page full of books in your library, or simply key it in by number at the end of the URL. "Oh, nobody has hundreds or thousands of books in their library, we can get rid of that, the user can just scroll infinitely until they find their title."

171 164 As a ending to my story, after 9 prescriptions by the end (sleep apnea was way scarier than the BP b/c I had had that previously) and a lousy 27 more weeks, I did birth my sole family athlete...so if I didn't already have a Tim, he'd have been my personal Tim Tebow (it's why we watch football, and I let him play flag football...he does have mom wrapped a little around her finger...

PS - My spouse was always a gem b/c I was the world's worst pregnant woman...I never glowed!
