Trump Announces Truly Huge Deal to... Take Over 65 Billion Barrels' Worth of Venezuela's Oil Reserves?!

Why would they do this?

Because successive socialist governments have, get this, run the oil industry into the ground. They did not do basic maintenance and never bothered to upgrade and modernize their infrastructure. They have billions of barrels of oil they never invested any money in so the oil remains underground.

The socialists, if you can believe this, simply extracted oil (and embezzled the money) while doing nothing to safeguard the future health of the industry.

So Venezuela needs outside help to do the most basic things.

I don't know if I like this. Venezuela has a nasty habit of repudiating past agreements and "nationalizing" -- stealing -- foreign investments in their oil industry.

But, who knows, if there's a Trumpian president, maybe they'll remember what happened to Maduro before nationalizing the newest capital improvements.

The US has struck a deal with Venezuela to control more than 65 billion barrels of its proven oil reserves, Donald Trump said.
The US president wrote that the agreement would more than double American oil reserves and "substantially lower Gas Prices for all Americans".
In a late-night address on Saturday, Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez hailed the deal as one that would help her nation's economic revival.

The media's stories all push the same attack line: The oil will not be extracted for years so Trump is a Big Orange Liar when he says that the deal will lower gas prices.

Try Googling it. Every single media story claims Trump is a liar about this reducing gas prices and he's doomed, doomed in the midterms.

They've managed 100% narrative coordination. Putin is envious.

But some analysts have reacted with scepticism, including questioning whether it would address long-running obstacles that have deterred investment in its oil industry.
Trump has recently been under domestic pressure to tame petrol prices, which have spiked due to the Iran war.
He vowed to tap into Venezuela's reserves, the world's largest, after the US captured its then-President Nicolás Maduro in January, ostensibly to stand trial on drug charges in New York.
Rodriguez, who is Maduro's former vice-president and who the US backed following his capture, said on Saturday that the energy agreement with the US would remain in force for 25 years.
She said it would target an increase in crude output to 1.5 million barrels per day and preserve the country's sovereignty over its natural resources.
Rodriguez hailed the accord as a "historic" deal that would help revive the economy and boost government revenue, saying it would help shape the country's future.

15 Look up the conditions we have put on how Venezuela uses the money they make from this deal. It goes into an account we monitor and control. Any disbursement has to be approved by us and be beneficial to the Venezuelan people so the leadership there cannot simply embezzle it.

There is also a whole separate set of incentives and punishments aimed at making them liberalize.

Well, less than a year ago they did sign an energy and security deal with Russia (under Maduro). That seems to have been negated.

Venezuela certainly has the crude, but they don't have the ability to refine. They were circumventing economic sanctions by sending to Iran for refining (who would push it back to Cuba and over to China). Each of these countries was ignoring economic sanctions, and this was the vehicle.

Now, the US is in negotiations with Canada who uses Crude as a negotiation point. Well, that leverage just took a nose dive with the Venezuelan agreement. Since January (Maduro's exit) the US has be averaging 500,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude to be refined at Gulf state refineries. By, comparison Canada provides 4 Million barrels to the US daily for refining. So, we covered 1/8th of that amount without an agreement in place with Venezuela...and now it will speed up. Wouldn't want to be Canadian right now. They are royally and truly screwed.

It happened in the mid-00s as well.
When prices were about to hit $140 because of the Iraq War and the instability of supply Bush signed an executive order opening up more territory on the coasts for oil exploration.

Oil prices dropped almost immediately and never really got that close to $140 again, because fracking was on the horizon.

67 I've been hearing about container-portable micro reactors since I was a kid. We're almost there.

A company called Radiant has shipped their prototype 1MW helium-cooled, TRISO-fueled micro reactor from California to INL/Battelle (on a semi!) as a PoC... its review process at INL has been fast-tracked and is expected to be approved with 8-10mos.

They have selected the old K-25 site in Oak Ridge as the production facility, due to its proximity to X-Energy's TRISO-X fuel production plant, and plan to build one reactor per week there, once they have commercial approval.

The first 15 have been pre-ordered by the Army for Ft. Benning.

Alongside the salt-cooled modular reactors being developed there by Kairos and others, the face of energy is about to change. It really is just over the horizon, now.

This is in its infancy, but the toothpaste is out of the tube.

That appears to be a canard nowadays. Part of the increased flexibility in more US refineries comes from the import of even heavier tar sands petroleum from Canada. Should help with diesel prices, asphalt, and tar as well. Second, Venezuela does produce light crude as well from different fields that can be mixed onsite to fit what refineries can handle.

Big trucks do a lot more damage to roads than cars. Mass times velocity does a number on interstates, bridges, and highways. Reason that they should never be on regular streets not designed for heavy trucks either when they use those streets for a shortcut.

So either tax diesel appropriately which catches most of the heavy truck damage or apply mileage taxes to them. Or you raise car fuel taxes and/or mileage taxes. Your choice.

FWIW, a lot of that traffic used to be on railroads where the RR bear all the costs of maintenance and pay for diesel as well.

The Premier of Alberta flat-out said that if Canada tried to embargo the US, they would lose access to our refineries, which would simply use Venezuela to take up the slack and they would be completely screwed.

She also reviewed how there are no pipelines going to Ontario and Quebec that don't entire US territory. They were proposed, but blocked.

Big trucks do a lot more damage to roads than cars. Mass times velocity does a number on interstates, bridges, and highways. Reason that they should never be on regular streets not designed for heavy trucks either when they use those streets for a shortcut.

So either tax diesel appropriately which catches most of the heavy truck damage or apply mileage taxes to them. Or you raise car fuel taxes and/or mileage taxes. Your choice.

FWIW, a lot of that traffic used to be on railroads where the RR bear all the costs of maintenance and pay for diesel as well.

A few states like Arkansas designed their highways way back when 73k was the maximum weight limit. They were forced to go to 80k along with some other states and the road bed simply could not take it.

And fwiw, when trucks speed, it increase the damage because of physics. So another way is to reduce truck speed to 55-60 mph maximum to limit damage.

And Eisenhower never intended for trucks to replace heavy rail either. It was more both than either or.

While I was out today I happened to drive by Rivian showroom,

So I thought I'd check it out for yucks.

I test drove the their R1S.

I have to say I liked it a lot. Well-made, one pedal driving is cool, their driver's assist was scary good.

If it weren't for all the issues associated with EVs, I might consider buying one.

But then there's the price, you can get a pretty great ICE spending roughly half what it would cost for an R1S.

Nice car though.
