An Egyptian American activist sentenced to life in prison in absentia by a Cairo court for his support of the Muslim Brotherhood is pumping cash into Abdul El-Sayed's campaign for U.S. Senate.
Mohamed Soltan, the 38-year-old president of the American Committee for Middle East Rights, is funneling funds to El-Sayed's Abdul for U.S. Senate candidate committee as ACMER contributes to Fighting for Michigan PAC, the super PAC backing the former Wayne County health official.
Soltan was sentenced by an Egyptian court to life in prison in 2015 after spending two years behind bars alongside his father, Salah Soltan, a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood who served as deputy minister of endowments for Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
Mohamed Soltan faced charges for aiding protests against the military coup that ousted Morsi, including funding for and membership in the Muslim Brotherhood, before launching a hunger strike that convinced former President Barack Obama's administration to demand his release in 2015.

Another gift from Obama.

In April 2015, an Egyptian court senenced the then 27-year-old to life in prison following what Soltan described as an unjust trial, according to NBC News.
He was released in May 2015 at Obama's request and returned to the U.S., where he works as an international investment advisor and human rights activist.
Salah Soltan [his father, whom he worked with -- ace] was sentenced to death and life in prison in separate trials for inciting murder as one of more than 50 leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood who set up a "control room" to direct "violence and chaos" amid the 2013 military coup.
Federal Election Commission reports show ACMER sent Fighting for Michigan PAC $25,000 on June 12, following two contributions from Mohamed Soltan to Abdul for U.S. Senate on April 15.
The individual contribution constitutes the maximum permitted by federal election law.
Other ACMER officials also contributed to El-Sayed's effort to become the first Muslim Senator in U.S. history.

The donations follow a documented history of El-Sayed supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
In January 2011, El-Sayed penned a column for the Huffington Post titled "Why the U.S. Should Support the Protestors in Egypt," suggesting Americans should back the uprising that led to Muslim Brotherhood control and Morsi's presidency.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned just weeks after El-Sayed's column, laying the groundwork for the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi, who became president in June 2012.

After arguing to the West that the Muslim Brotherhood would not be authoritarian like the Iranian regime, Abdulrahman Hussein El-Sayed signed a statement calling for a "purge" of the "media and police."

The most significant Bilzerian and El-Sayed donor is Ibrahim Awad, who has given more than $19,500 between both candidates, Federal Election Commission records show. That haul included a $12,651.88 jumbo gift to the Bilzerian Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee. The figure is above the legal limit and potentially a campaign finance violation if passed along to Bilzerian's campaign committee.

Is that a specific interview or just standard "journalistic" practice you're referring to?

I'd love to see an interviewer pin a subject down to the ground until they admit they don't know, they were wrong, or they were lying, but live interviewers always want to keep it moving and get to their questions. I think it would be better tv and more dramatic to get to the bottom of just one question no matter what.

He had to give a bunch of it back. But he managed to keep most of it. It was all dirty money stolen and hidden by his scumbag father. But it was put into a blind trust that was set up technically legally (by experienced lawyers) and they are hard to break open.

I thought that it was an odd casting choice, as one envisions Sikes as a muscular thug. IIRC, Curry played him as kind of a druggie. He did a good job, such as it was, but his portrayal was not really in keeping with the Dickens character.

He probably would've made a good Fagin, though.

Cooper looks like he's doing fine in NC, but NC polling in summer is notoriously bad. Cooper is polling like Cunningham did (actually a tad behind) in 2020 before Cunningham lost to Tillis.

And, I'm going to be honest, I haven't seen a single pro-Cooper thing yet. I've gotten a dozen mailers blaming him for crime. He left office with Helene a complete mess and him a complete no-show. Iryna's death is pinned on him.

And the party registrations of the state have gotten A LOT more Republican since he last ran in 2020. He won by 250,000 votes in 2020. There were 400,000 more Ds than Rs at the time. There are now 10,000 more Rs than Ds.

I think there's a better chance that Whatley wins by Trump 2024 margins in the state than just about anything else.
