Explanation: Single shots like this require planning. The first step is to realize that such an amazing triple-alignment actually takes place. The second step is to find the best location to photograph it. But it was the third step: being there at exactly the right time -- and when the sky was clear -- that was the hardest. Five times over six years the photographer tried and found bad weather. Finally, just ten days ago, the weather was perfect, and a photographic dream was realized. Taken in Piemonte, Italy, the cathedral in the foreground is the Basilica of Superga, the mountain in the middle is Monviso, and, well, you know which moon is in the background. Here, even though the setting Moon was captured in a crescent phase, the exposure was long enough for doubly reflected Earthlight, called the da Vinci glow, to illuminate the entire top of the Moon.

19 Got a tiny bit of housework done. Hung a roller shade. I'm getting faster at it, but my workflow still sucks. I always find myself climbing/descending the ladder about 20 times per window. If I count the front porch, there are 40 windows in this dump.

Got a quote for hauling out two old chests of drawers: $200. (Salvation Army claims they have no drivers anymore, but I see their trucks all the time; I live two blocks away from their base of ops.)

I was thinking more like $50 to haul them out. I'd rather just take a nail puller to both of them, reduce them to scrap, and toss them out piece by piece myself, than pay three figures.

I agree 1000 percent. I went camping last weekend with my bf and her family to get out of town. Took my Nellie with me. Was so excited as we were on the river and I know goldens love to swim. I think I have a dud. She got in, paddled about 20 feet and came back to shore and stole my towel and laid next to me the whole time. Still love her to death tho.

Plus, the Ukes have more spine to fight than most Western Europeans (especially considering the mass migration). This scenario isn't too far fetched. Had Goldens in my life since I was 7 when our first one adopted us. Long story. There was always one in our house, sometimes 3.

My second to last Golden was part fish. He would sneak away and run to the beach swim, dig up clams, swim some more, roll in the sand, and then swim. He loved to swim like a fat kid loves cake.

My last was broken. I got him from a breeder who did dog shows so I thought she had avoided the cancer that is ravaging the breed. I was wrong. But he hated the water. Wonderful dog, loved everyone, typical Golden in every way other than water was his mortal enemy. Loved him anyway.

The Moon's angular size in the sky doesn't change much at all. At given instant, over the half the earth where the Moon is visible, while the actual distance to an observer anywhere over that half does change a little bit, it's a vanishingly small fraction of the total.

So, to get a shot like that, you just have to get the right distance away from the target so the angular size of that target just matches the Moon.

Then add foreshortening from a telephoto lens and there you go.

The angular size of the Moon is about 0.5 degree. The width of your little finger at arm's length is about 1 degree, so the Moon is about half a finger (and so is the Sun).

However, you'll notice the Moon looms much larger looking low on the horizon. This is entirely an illusion, a trick your brain pulls on you. Hold your little finger out and you'll see the angular size is dead constant as the Moon moves arcs across the sky.

You get far enough away, and use telephoto lens and you can get everything the right size. Of course, this makes it very weather dependent and so quite a challenge.

Overall, they’re pretty slick. Just have to start wargaming the port to Electron so that they are cross platform.

They could be deployed as is but it would require the end user to install python, npm, and other libraries manually.

It’s fairly technical and is largely built for MacOsLinux and is not very windows friendly.

Again, imagine the half of the earth that can see the Moon at any time. Over that area, the Moon's apparent position against the celestial background will move around about 1 degree, or two Moon diameters.

Over the course of a ~12 hour diurnal visibility period, when you add the parallax shift as the earth rotates with the Moon's own orbital motion (which is the fastest angular rate of anything), the Moon's position against the background can shift up to 4 Moon widths.

I have done that upside down thing when I was much younger -- as mentioned above, I'm not gonna try that now, with this damned arthritis, but it does seem to work.

I haven't tried it with a mirror, though. It's a perspective error your brain makes when it sees the Moon close to objects on horizon. The trick is just to break that error.

Another illusion with the Moon you'll sometimes people go on about is the "Moon is following me!" illusion.

The Moon is very far away, yet still visible, and our brains normal processing (half of what we think we see is our brain "post processing" you might call it) just doesn't.

So, if you move in a straight line as far as you reasonably can over a short time period, the Moon's apparent angular position relative to you doesn't change at all. Imagine you carrying along a little coordinate system with you as move. The Moon's position vector doesn't change at all.

But the position of all the other much closer objects does change significantly. Hence, "The Moon is following me!" This applies to stars and planets and the Sun as well, but people don't generally notice that.
