Two more Massachusetts communities are cutting ties with Flock Safety, adding East Bridgewater and Grafton to a growing list of cities and towns reconsidering the use of the company’s automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology.
The East Bridgewater and Grafton police departments announced Friday that they would discontinue using Flock cameras, citing concerns raised by residents.

Many residents took the opportunity to express their opposition to the technology at the forum.
“Technology is really problematic when it comes to law enforcement,” resident Katie McMullen said to Jenkins. “You feel like you’ve looked at every angle, but you’re looking at it through the lens of law enforcement.”

“As Chief, I will always place the safety, privacy, constitutional rights, and confidence of the people of East Bridgewater at the center of our decisions … While we may not always agree on every issue, I believe that an open and respectful dialogue makes our community stronger,” Jenkins said.

Another (sorta kinda) win in a deep blue state

Man sued local governments in WA over Flock records. He’s won $300K

Washington cities and counties have paid more than $300,000 since 2025 in public records settlements for failing to release images from Flock Safety cameras. They were filed by one man who recently told Cascadia Daily News he wanted people in the communities to better understand the AI-powered, roadside surveillance technology some law enforcement agencies use to document every passing vehicle.
Between September 2024 and October 2025, Jose Rodriguez filed 53 records requests to local governments in Washington. Roughly one-third of them did not comply. The records, at the time, presented hurdles for record custodians because they were hosted by Flock rather than internally, and subject to a rolling 30-day deletion policy and download limits. In other words, the records could be gone before a custodian accessed them to fulfill a request.
Last week, Sedro-Woolley City Council approved a settlement for $40,000 for failing to release the camera data and images. But, that was only half the money, according to the settlement agreement. Stanwood was also on the hook for $40,000. A vote by the city council to authorize Mayor Sid Roberts to sign the settlement agreement passed the next day.
The settlement agreement did not include release of the records, which representatives from the cities said they no longer possess. Rodriguez was adamant the goal of the lawsuits was not financial gain; he said cities were given enough time to be able to respond before Flock’s rolling deletions destroyed the records he requested.
“Had the cities processed Mr. [Jose] Rodriguez’s records request correctly, there never would have been a need for litigation,” attorney Tim Hall wrote in an email to CDN. “The untold story of the $80,000 settlement is how much taxpayer money was wasted in defense of the unlawful destruction of public records.”

So not a complete win. The cameras are probably still there, and lots of taxpayer money was spent defending these cases and making the payout. But at least there's sunlight being shone.

The Buc-ee’s beaver logo features the face of a beaver with prominent buck teeth wearing a red ball cap against a yellow backdrop. The Beaver’s Mini Mart mascot is a full beaver, unclothed, waving and smiling against a white background.
Customers have been critical of Buc-ee’s decision to target the much smaller store.
“I love Buc-ee’s, but I don’t plan on going back until they start making better business decisions,” Austin Collins, 32, a project manager from Fairborn, said outside Beaver’s, where he was making his first visit to protest the lawsuit.

Buc-ee’s CEO suggested recently that the Texas-based travel center chain may be done looking into blue districts, saying some communities do not appreciate what the company brings while conservative states offer business-friendly and family-oriented values.
Arch "Beaver" Aplin III, the company’s president and co-founder, made the comments during the grand opening of Buc-ee’s newest location in Benton, Arkansas on August 17. The chain is known for its expansive gas stations, famously clean restrooms and in-house food offerings.
"We have a lot of opportunities. We're growing. We're building in a lot of places. But when you find a conservative business-friendly state with a phenomenal workforce, it makes a difference," Aplin said.
Aplin criticized states that he said do not appreciate what Buc-ee’s brings to their communities, suggesting the company would rather focus its expansion efforts elsewhere.

From that NASA page on the Moon illusion, I did not know this. Astronauts in orbit still see it. The Moon looks larger over the horizon to them as well.

And that shows it doesn't depend on foreground objects on the horizon so much.

42 Very sad about Dolly's passing. One of the last stars who genuinely liked people more than money, and was happier to gain fans rather than dollars. Her genuine-ness seemed perfect and I sure hope it was.

Watched another in the series of "Worst Films Ever Made," in this case "Gummo." The tornado should have come back in the third act and wiped out all these characters.

Now up to 95 percent in, Mazzei has about a 2500 vote lead. Becomes a numbers game at this point regarding which counties and precincts are remaining. 50.7 to 49.3. Also looks regional, Drummond doing better in Western OK and Mazzei taking Eastern OK.

Haven't been impressed by Drummond. Nor a lot of OK GOP, they seem to have a Texas GOPe problem despite being ruby red. In states like that, you get basically Democrats running as GOP and D crossover votes letting them do it in primaries.

Buc-ee's was Shell-branded at its largest station in Luling, Texas (among others), and purchased over a million gallons per month. Shell had (probably still has) a tracer in its branded gasoline for which it tests every station periodically to make sure only Shell-branded gasoline is being sold under Shell's trademarks. A random test of the Luling station revealed that only about half of the gasoline sold there had the Shell tracer; i.e., it was not Shell gasoline (who knows what it really was and they were pocketing the difference in price between branded and unbranded gasoline). After an infringement suit was threatened, Buc-ee's settled and then quit selling branded gasoline at any of its locations. Buc-ee's is a stringent trademark enforcer, but also an infringer! I would never buy fuel from Buc-ee's. Hopefully the beaver nuggets are real!

She also had a card catalog with something like 20,000 jokes in it on cards. She had a bunch of quirky vehicles, including a 1965 Checker Marathon Station wagon. I think it was yellow, IIRC. The wigs were displayed on styrofoam heads, of course. She lived to 95. I heard a long interview with her when she was about 90. Sharp as a tack, funny, and still had the laugh.

Jack, I saw the same distribution of votes in the recent governor's primary race where Norman failed to make the runoff. He simply does not appeal outside his district. That is always a risk when you run a House of Rep guy. Statewide races are harder to win for strongly ideological candidates. Darline also had more money, Lindsay's election team, and won a tough two races to get to the general. Tough for a person who was never a politician.

In the main primary two weeks ago, it was a classic regional thing. Update went for Norman, Pee Dee went for Fry (he was their guy). Low country went for Darline, but just barely, because Mark Sanford, Mr. Appalachian Trail was in it and came in second. Midlands went for Darline, but Sanford was stilling spoiling pretty good there.

I think they were worried enough the Pee Dee might have gone with Norman, so they had to get Fry to endorse Darline. Which he did, and the fact that Trump signed on to a pet highway project Fry was pushing for didn't have anything to do with that, I'm sure.....

Anyway, in the end it was Upstate vs everybody else.

160 Phyllis Diller had a wig room in her house. Dolly must have similar. Phyllis was a painter and did collage and such and if you made an appointment, bought a piece of her art for $3-400, she would give you a little tour and a look at her wig room. She also had a card catalog with something like 20,000 jokes in it on cards. She had a bunch of quirky vehicles, including a 1965 Checker Marathon Station wagon. I think it was yellow, IIRC. The wigs were displayed on styrofoam heads, of course. She lived to 95. I heard a long interview with her when she was about 90. Sharp as a tack, funny, and still had the laugh.

I have no quibbles with what you say. Ironically, Trump is the closest thing to a FDR political phenomenon that the GOP has ever had. Teddy perhaps comes the closest to the mark for Trump.

And like Teddy (and not FDR for his first six years), Trump has struggled mightily with the GOPe faction in Congress that wants to fail and lose to Dems. Particularly in the US Senate.

I blame Mitch McConnell and Senate GOP for Barrett. Basically with Ruth keeling over right at the 2020 election, Trump had to accept whoever Mitch would let him have for the seat or Biden would have filled it.

It should require a warrant. The problem is that again, technology has moved far faster than the law. Back when Scotus decided Katz in 1960's, it was Feds turning on and off mikes in a phone booth when a bookie, Katz, went into to place his bets and receive them. So Scotus created the new reasonable expectation of privacy std instead of the older trespass standard of Olmstead. Olmstead came about because telephones in common use. The idea was that as long as the wiretaps were external to the house, it was okay. At the time operators could and did listen into calls and had to connect them.

Carroll decision was when automobiles came about and Prohibition was on. Again, tech has made that dubious

With today's tech, we require a new 4th Amendment standard.

Lesser of evils standard--do you take the devil you know or the devil you don't know. All I know about politicians is that they will eventually all betray you on one vote/action or another. I don't get emotional about politicians--the survival of the US is at stake and we are more vulnerable now than we have been in decades since the Cold War. And we were much more united in the Cold War era than now.

Dangerous times mean discarding politicians that sound good on TV but do nothing, pragmatic to pick the better option and not hold out for the perfect one, and a spine of steel when confronted with leftists/Dems and sob story media.

I just had some last night. A place about 10 miles away with great food has a 1/2 price wings and pizza special on monday. I had a long island ice tea, a plate of wings, a large pizza ,and a salad.. $38. The Long island ice tea cost more than any of the food. I had no clue they had those specials, it was just ride on the bike. Mrs B jumped on the back and off we went and ended up there. yeah, no football involved. lol

Justice Alito in a recent search and seizure case brought up perhaps that the court should move to a mosaic principle rather than the reasonable expectation of privacy. We have to share a lot of information with our banks, credit cards, utilities like telecom and internet, etc. We don't have a choice if we don't want to live as a jobless hermit on the streets.
All of that is now available due to prior precedent to a lazy cop in an office with a computer. Whereas in the old days, the cop would have to go about to the stores, get a warrant for the home, etc to go through receipts, numbers called, etc. and it took a lot of legwork. Now they just pop on Flock and cross reference other data and show up at your house accusing you of stealing packages from porches etc. (this happened recently--the woman could fortunately prove she only was somewhere else when the theft occurred). Searches have gotten cheaper for cops and they do more of them.

227 What mosaic theory of 4th Amendment would do is push back on the fact that cops can do such searches easily without a warrant. The idea is that if a cop uses technology and databases to the degree that they can, then a warrant must be obtained for probable cause---so looking for one car caught in a Flock camera near the heist would be okay. If you go through all the cars that possibly went through the intersection and cross referenced texts, phone calls, geolocation data, their bank records, credit, purchases, etc. to sift through data to find a culprit then you best have a warrant to present to a judge. At some point, all the different databases available to police quickly becomes a general search, not the particularized requirement under the 4th as to person or things to be searched and seized.

Totally OT...I saw your comment on the Jesus statue and it being the most moving places you've ever been.

We were in Killarney, Ireland several years ago and visited the ruins of Muckross Abbey. The yew tree and cloisters moved me. We were the only people there at the time wandering around...and it felt like holy ground, the cemetary, all of it.

I felt a hatred for Cromwell I'd never had before.

I've been moved by Westminster Abbey and Notre Dame each time I've visited, but this was different.

Became Catholic this past March and doubt I will pass that way again.

We always find something that is not a touristy place, and this was one.

Came home and found antique colored postcards, as I like to do of travels, and frame as a group...on linen paper.

I think we are just efficiently tuned to find higher concern in things at or near the horizon. We also lose a sense of how far the object is away because some shit potentially coming at you on the horizon feels closer than something that appears thoroughly stationary in the air. Plus the thermal heat signature sensors have gotten a helluva lot better to the point where they can sometimes id someone inside the house now. And now drones that can linger and an automated license plate reader to determine who comes and goes from your house. TV and phones can be turned on remotely to listen in on people etc. etc.

OK. This has been talked to death here. Yes, the popup ads are annoying, to those who see them. I don't, because I use Brave Web Browser on a Linux desktop. Sometimes the page loads hang, though.

Remember, this site was written and designed for Web 1.0, you were expected to use a laptop or desktop to read it. The fact that you can (mostly) view it on a phone is simply fortuitous. It's like a dog walking on its hind legs. It is remarkable that it is done at ll, not that it is done well.

You can get Brave Browser for Android. AFAIK, it is free, and not hard to install. There are also numerous ad blockers you can get.

That happens with cards too. Sometimes if you have it in a poly sleeve in a plastic sleeve or even a screw case. I'd heat or Sun gets on it sometimes breaks down the poly sleeve. I had that happen in storage. Luckily not to anything of any real value.

Wasn't there a SCOTUS ruling a few years ago that said basically that cops can watch your home without a warrant but if they used technology that did more than just enhance human capabilities -- like a thermal sensor instead of just binoculars -- that crossed a line and required a warrant? Seems like wifi sniffers would be in the same category but who knows. Everything has to be argued and hashed out as its own special case now.

A lot of the collectable glass, pottery and porcelain got repro'd to hell and back. Some values of some nice stuff got wiped out. Galle, for example. Plus the internet completely changed what scarcity meant. What used to be rare enough to take weeks or even months to find, you could now have your choice of several instantly. Lastly, the producers themselves went mass produced and cheap, like Fenton Glass.

Most of that stuff outside of the really rare ($1,000+) had their value drop to 1/3 or worse.

Oh, yeah! Funny, I was digging gravel out from around my septic tank today, and a lot of the gravel was angular pebbles of black chert, probably from the Nordegg Formation in northwestern Alberta, and brought here by glaciers.

I managed to advance the little pit around the tank flange by more than a foot by using a shop vac as the digging implement. Tedious, as the hose would clog frequently, but I could dig while standing up.

The employees tried to form a union at some point, and I think the owner just said fuck that, and shut it all down and retired. It’s going to be the same problem, only magnified. “Cherry pickers” come in, they know what they are looking for. Take a few items, they don’t want all that other shit.

The trick is to sell it on “you take all of it” basis. No cherry picking. Otherwise, you will end up with a whole bunch of stuff nobody wants, and … another name for that is garbage. Hafta pay money to get rid of it. If you were Sentimental before, you probably won’t be after.

I recently saw a video where an owner of a herd of goats in Australia rents them out for cleaning up yards -- fenced, of course -- that had become overgrown and unmanageable. The place that was shown in the video was cleaned up after five days to the point where removing the residual debris was possible.

Whether such a service exists in this country is not known to me, but it was remarkable to see how much of the crap biomass vanished from the property.

To a point she does. I have friends that know. One owned a guitar store for years, so he knows every guitar and amp I have. I have a friend who has a harley shop, and he knows all the tools and parts. My brother knows all the contractor and wood tools. They will be a huge help. Mrs B will be ok. Although, my plan is to eventually sell most of it off, piss the money away like a drunken sailor so Mrs B's grifter nieces don't get a fucking dime.

We have had our place in Sussex County for just over twenty years now. The amount of plowing up farmland and building new cookie cutter domicile "communities" around here during that time is remarkable, and not for any good reasons. "New Homes From $350K and Above" is not much of an inducement for local folks to buy one.

There were a half dozen or so places -- all listed as being for sale -- along our travel route that were remarkable for their obvious states of disrepair, neglect, and outright insane do-it-yourself upgrades. Nearly all of them are long gone now save one, and that is decaying into ruin while serving as an impromptu greenhouse for the native vegetation.

Yeah, once I get most of the junk out of there... the place looks like hell on the inside too because of all the *stuff* there. (long story, but some of it is from when I sold my old place and had nowhere to go with it)

Anyway-- it isn't gonna happen quickly, but I sure hope to be done before next summer!

Mrs KvC and I will need to have a meeting of the minds when she comes back north in September. There is a boatload of stuff in our home that needs to go before we'd even be able to put the place on the market, including.her pottery kiln in the garage. My point will be that I am here to help rid this place of the wretched excess. Were I to expire before that is accomplished, she would find that process far more unpleasant than it will be with me here to help.

379 My nearly 91 y.o. mother is bedridden, not really all there all the time, and has 24-7 live-in help. Still, she does have moments of clarity. She recently told my sister that she (mom) had canceled her appointment with the End; she wasn't ready yet. I think at this point, given how little she eats, her appointment with the End will be a matter of weeks. My bro, sis, and I get along fine. The occasional squabble, but that's it. Nothing like I've read here.

386 I'll have to deal with my father's house eventually. He's 88 this year, but he's doing good. His family goes into their 90s. His brother is 92, his sister is 90, both sharp as a tack. Still, its only a matter of time. The only upside is his house is in nice shape, we completely renovated the whole thing, and did 2 additions (front and back) about 15 years ago when they bought it. The paint was barely dry before mom died. I'll have to deal with a few small things, but nothing crazy.
