Gentlemen, pray silence for the President of the Royal Society for Putting Things on Top of Other Things.
I thank you, gentlemen. The year has been a good one for the Society (hear, hear). This year our members have put more things on top of other things than ever before. But, I should warn you, this is no time for complacency. No, there are still many things, and I cannot emphasize this too strongly, not on top of other things. I myself, on my way here this evening, saw a thing that was not on top of another thing in any way. (shame!) Shame indeed but we must not allw ourselves to become too despondent. The Spindletop oil discovery on January 10, 1901, marked the beginning of the modern petroleum industry in the United States, producing between 75,000 to 100,000 barrels of oil per day. This event transformed Beaumont, Texas, into a booming oil town and led to the establishment of major oil companies like Gulf Oil and Texaco.

I have a large Art Deco panel right next to me here, made in 1941. 8'X9' fresco plaster, enamel and gold and silver leaf on an oak panel. Rescued it from a building from demolition across the street from Madison Square Garden in 1984. The artist, Louis Ross, did extensive murals for the '39 World's Fair and was a protege of Hildreth Meiere, a woman who helped bring Art Deco to the US. She studied in Paris around 1920. They did a goodly amount of work on Rockefeller Center decoration both inside and out.

I rode the elevator at the Gateway Arch with the ex MiL with claustrophobia. Pure hell. For those who've never been -- but eventually get -- to Santa Catalina Island (off the coasts of L.A. and Long Beach), they have a wonderful old Art Deco theater called the "Catalina Casino" -- in Avalon, built in 1929 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. Despite its name, it's not a gambling facility; the term "casino" refers to an Italian gathering place for social events.
The structure stands 12 stories tall and houses two primary attractions: the Avalon Theatre on the lower level, which was the first theater designed specifically for sound films ("talkies"), and the Wrigley Ballroom on the top level, featuring the world’s largest circular dance floor with a 50-foot ceiling and panoramic views of Avalon Bay. It served as a hub for Big Band music in the 30s and 40s, hosting legends like Glenn Miller and Harry James, and includes: a restored 1928 pipe organ; original hardwood floors; and a wrap-around Ocean Promenade. 158 Aerosmith is a very overrated band. Some of their early albums were ok, I guess. Just never understood all the praise.
Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory at September 04, 2026 Stephen Tyler actually has very strong vocals, that he pushed to the absolute max, hence his recent vocal cord injury. To scream in range like he does and immediately return without being pitchy takes talent. If you hear his vocals in isolation, there is not much that gets engineered, which is amazing with this genre. He does not have the range Axel Rose did (does? He has been hard on his voice, too), but he has pipes under all that flair. Posted by: Piper at September 04, 2026 10:24 AM (ZdaMQ) 190

The music video where they have Liv Tyler lez out with some other pop tarlet became really eye opening when I learned Liv was the lead singer's daughter. Yeah yeah nepotism but you couldn't get your own daughter a better role?!? Posted by: 18-1 at September 04, 2026 10:26 AM (sKqQm) 199

Tyler was sort of the Temu Mick Jagger, as some people might put it.
They were pretty decent American band with a few really popular tunes. I always thought it would be cool to throw in those “ka ka ka ka ka ka ka!” vocals whenever the spirit moved me. Posted by: Common Tater at September 04, 2026 10:27 AM (zom6H) 201
