Mom planted a small garden off one wall. It was downhill, so when it rained, the rainwater rushed through the shop and into the garden.

It is odd, but one of the things I wish I had saved from my grandparent's house was one of the ash trays. Grandma was a lifelong smoker (until about 10 years or so before she died.) She had tons of these ornate and beautiful ash trays. One of them I remember was this large brass one. It was almost a platter with a raised, circular edge in which the zodiacal symbols were engraved. It had two little figures (kind of the size of chess pieces) that were supposed to be used to stamp out burning ash.

66 But, IIRC, that ash tray was the standard ash tray you'd find in restaurants and various places. Probably dirt cheap considering how many of them I remember seeing.

You'd go to some touristy place and find that same ash tray with some sort of engraving in the bowl or more likely a glued picture of relating to the place.

The book looks like the parts cross-reference catalogs Walmart used to have in the auto aisle. You'd find your make and model, then read across to see what catalog number of oil and air filter (from Fram, Purolator, Mobil, etc.) would fit.

87 This is hilarious. I love classic still life paintings and this is a wonderful spoof of all the elements usually included. The dark background, the disparate items 'arranged' haphazardly, the realistic colors, the manual open and offering 'ancient wisdom', the burnt cigars 'denoting' the fleeting nature of life, and of course the partially eaten fruit all harken back to the classics of the genre.

I was a little disappointed it was a photo, not a painting. But it is art. Some of the best photos I ever took were arranged still life shots. They were also the most fun to set up.

88 One half-eaten pear I can understand, the guy is working in the shop and grabbed a quick snack. But the other pears imply that this is where the guy keeps his pears, and that seems like a bad idea.

Or maybe he really likes pears, so when he has pears, he always eats a couple at one time. I'd be happy to hear what other readers have to say on this pear issue.

I did save this lighter grandma had. It is a figure of a knight in full plate armor. Stands about... maybe 5 inches tall. The knights helmet opens up for the flame (although it has not worked in years.) I have it sitting on display shelving in view right now.

My (possibly incorrect) understanding is that a "still life" is called that because it shows something that was alive but is now still. Usually fish, birds, or small game. Maybe fruit and veggies count but I dunno, I don't make The Rules.

I have grandpa's from when he was in the army.

-one is a all painted black affair that shows a lot of wear.

-one of the larger, non zippo lighters engraved 'Maj E C Natal, 31 Aug 58' (I am assuming he got that one when he made Major, 1958.)

-another more zippo type engraved '44th AAA Brig. Officers Club'

There's a host of 'training' that must be taken annually, sure, but if you get a phishing test email and open it, you're flagged and must take the security course within 90 days or some such.

So as not to greatly & continually endanger the lives of its field staff, even deficient as most of them were, the agency never implemented the once proposed Lucky Strike (my personal branding) task force which was to directly challenge smoking on-the-job.

But never doubt its deviousity, then or now. As a substitute, violations were & are issued hither and yon for employers not having a "suitable" safety program.

It makes the jaws wider. A lot of uses. It might have been done to address a certain problem. Its good for bending sheet metal. I have a set of square bar stock pieces I put in the vice for just that purpose. Having them welded in would be faster though. What this dude needed them for is anybody's guess. It might be as simple as he wanted a wider jaw.

That shit hung around here in KY for 3 weeks. And one of those weeks it was well above freezing. Took me 3 days to get the front of the garage cleaned enough that the door would open. Ice... a foot or more thick.

One of the happiest days of my life was when I told Musicians Union Local 174-496 that I was ending my membership. I made up a reason other than "'Cuz you suck!" - something like going into the Army, etc etc. I always hated 'em 'cos at 'election time', the name on the paper in the slot always had the notice "You MUST vote for AT LEAST ONE!". Well shit! … There's only one 'candidate' 'for each position. G'bye, suckahs.
