"Van der Neer was barely able to support his family by selling his landscapes, which were not highly valued. In 1659 it seemed necessary to supplement his income by keeping a wine tavern, but two years later he went broke. He died at Kerkstraat in abject poverty, and his art was so little esteemed that the pictures left by him were valued at about five shillings apiece. His son Eglon became a portrait painter himself."

Several were involved in cleaning or charging their fire arms, and one muzzle showed a wisp of smoke from having just discharged -- all invisible during the time the work got famous.

110 This is a wonderful use of light to make a dramatic landscape: restrained and natural. van der Neer includes enough detail to set the place with the trees, stream and houses but filtered through the sun setting through clouds. It is quietly dynamic, if such a phrase makes sense, because a setting sun happens quickly and this is just a brief moment.

It reminds me of some of the darker paintings by Jacob van Ruisdael. For my taste, much of the finest art deriving from the European Renaissance was in the northern countries more than Italy.

It really saddens me to see what the job interview proccess has turned into. I've got a bud that is looking for a change. Everytime he gets into a company interview process, it's meeting after meeting after meeting until you're at the CO / Ownership level.

Holy crap. When did it change from interviewing with a manager, then that manager's boss or HR then getting hired or not?

My department keeps it pretty simple for the low-level jobs. I'm part of two interviews today. We *might* arrange an on-campus visit for a finalist, but that's not guaranteed if we reach a consensus on a candidate.

Now, for anyone at the executive leadership level, interviews are a grueling, mind-numbing, multiple step process.

This past weekend we got some tree-ripe Palisade peaches from my brother's orchard. That prompted Missus Muldoon to read up on the history of fruit growing in the Grand Valley just a few minutes ago. First half of the 20th century apples grown west of G.Jct. dominated, but due to some bad irrigation practices and a resistant species of coddling moth the apple orchards were devastated and peaches grew to prominence, now east of G. Jct. in Palisade and East Orchard Mesa.

With weaponized HR, lawsuits, fake and gay news coverage, gubmint vultures, and the sociopaths that go instantly to social media over trivial employment annoyances, I think the point that hiring people in megacorp is essentially looking for a landmine that might blow up the whole place.

So in today's environment, a CEO of a fast food restaurant might have to respond to some low level asshole employees and managers misbehaving or lose their job. Ditto for if the low level employee and manager on duty at the time don't respond the way a bunch of online assholes think they should when outrage merchants provoke them.

Essentially minor conflicts become skirmishes in broader societal wars.

The response is to bureaucratize even minor job hirings and being risk averse to hiring anyone that might cause the CEO to lose their job, no matter what the level. That also explains why H1Bs and hookers share the same characteristics-disposable relationships.

Small business owners were purposefully screwed on health insurance--they could not band together to get group insurance rates and could not deduct their own health insurance if they did not extend it to all full time employees.

Anytime you get a middleman between the seller and the buyer like healthcare and insurance, the insurance company will seek to maximize its takings from the transaction affecting both seller and buyer.

In addition, almost every living doctor that practiced since LBJ had their practice subsidized by the fact that Medicare and to a lesser extent Medicaid set a floor price on medical services.

Like student loans and grants, the fedgov is responsible for the massive and unsustainable price growth in medical and higher education markets.

The result of this is everyone is trying not to be the guy left out when music in musical chairs of government spending stops playing.

There's an intersection near us, that isn't really a major intersection, though it does cross a major street.

Man, you'd think are sleepy little middle class area we were crime central.

There must've been 20-30 Flock cameras within a roughly quarter block circle around the intersection itself.

So, I guess we're safe. Very safe.

Bush, Congress, and federal judges have made a thorough mess of the 9/11 cases. The urgency to prevent more unknown terror plots after 9/11 by interrogating prisoners meant that they could never be tried in the civil court system and Scotus in its stupidity shot down the tribunal system which was both constitutional and appropriate to try terrorists.

So the ersatz semi trial system of military commissions was created which was never designed for unlawful combatants in the first place. Tribunals took care of those types.

No doubt, the line continues all the way until it blurs with nature. Predators and prey, exploiters, and exploited, all the way down. Individuals might not have done so but the rule was my family,tribe, clan, country > your family, tribe, clan, country.

What is different is that Christianity as a derivative of Judaism proposed we don't have to live that way and so the West collectively decided that was true with exceptions. Other than perhaps Buddhists or perhaps Bahai, not so much.
