The Dear Wife and I visited the local county fair today.
One of the vendors was selling a deep fried curly seasoned potato for $10. Ten f***ing dollars!! For one big potato. What has the world come to? On a happier note, a group of gals from our HS were manning (womaning?) a booth promoting Turning Point USA and were all up on what happened to Charlie Kirk. They were lovely, well-spoken young ladies - just delightful. One of them told me they have chapters in most of the high schools in TN. Posted by: Worse than dating, and dating is hell at August 21, 2026 11:19 PM (TbWk/) --- The best way to find a job is to use human social networks. Not online stuff, but people you know, who know people, and so on. That's how stuff gets done. You know a guy at church who knows a guy who knows a nice lady. I'm a grandfather, so I can't claim to be hip and current, but my kids are using it. You network with people in a given career field and get a sense of who is hiring and what they need. The employer puts obstacles because they don't want to have to fire someone right after hiring. They want to know if this person will really work and at this point, a lot of the traditional filters (like college degrees) have been completely corrupted. But if the guy doing the hiring is told "This person can do it" from someone they trust, that's different. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 21, 2026 11:26 PM (ZOv7s) 191

When I lost my job decades ago, my father gave me a book (What Color Is Your Parachute) that was the usual self-help garbage, but it contained the idea that one way to find a job you want is to look at companies you want to work for locally and just drop in. Ask about what they do, show interest in the operation, talk with other employees, and let it be known that you admire their work and would like to be part of their team.
It may turn out that they are expanding, or have been thinking of adding a position, and someone who is so geeked about working for the to stop in is naturally going to get a closer look. So Mr. TiFW and I now have 2 tickets for the last Saturday in September to go and see our local team playing the Banana Ball guys! 🎉🎉🎉 Looks like they have a full day of fun lined up for all of their fans - I am going to drag Mr. TiFW kicking and screaming for as much of the full fan experience that we can stand (he prefers to spend his time sitting on the couch watching guy movies) so that we can make another memory 😊💕 I will take lots of pictures to share at the Texas MoMe - Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at August 21, 2026 11:40 PM (SRRAx) 200
Brass bass in the blues has been around forever. More presence than a string bass, which helped when records were made acoustically. I had the privilege of seeing Taj Mahal live at the Max Singer concert hall in Calgary, many years ago. Put on a great show.

Well, I got all the damned black paint off the dune buggy body tube. Wore out about 60 razor blades and a dozen sticky discs for the D/A sander. Interior is all stripped down to the gel coat. Exterior needs a lot of high-build primer sanded off, but that is easy to do.
Got new fiberglass laid up in the repaired corners, and the resin set up just fine. When you stop to think about it, fiberglass is amazing shit. A can of gooey syrup, plus some floppy fabric, plus "magic", and you have a solid piece with real structural strength. And I have most of a quart of DP 40 non-sanding epoxy primer-sealer, and the corresponding hardener. Enough to do this puppy; makes a surface that paint sticks to like glue, and prevents any under-colors from bleeding through. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 21, 2026 11:44 PM (1z8ji) 202
When I applied for my first postdoc, the researcher I wanted to work with saw my PhD professor as a rival, and looked askance at his recommendations for me. But this same researcher had worked with my Ms professor (I got both Ms and PhD for reasons), and that was what got me the in. His recommendations (my Ms professor’s) were gold. I was worth taking on. This lead eventually to a NRL postdoc, and that got me the job offer at my university, as well as my work and winning personality, good looks, etc. No, it was the NRL cachet, and maybe my work.

Thank you for the ONT.
Farm kids are different because we are feral. No one knew where we were or asked til sunset. There were always farm cars to learn to drive at age 12yrs. My friend and I "waterskied" with her 13yr old bro driving through woods on a farm road in our swimsuits, hanging onto the luggage rack and ducking for limbs vs losing heads. Set fire to stuff did get us noticed & it was never my fault at a friend's house from smoking cigs, where her brother put the fires out. In once case hay near her Dad's shop. Another time friends set her mother's car on fire at a church thing (cigs). Again, not my fault and man was her father mad (you could see the trunk) and the backseat was springs. You had to watch the little siblings. One thought our goat's poop was Milk Duds and we stopped him from tasting. Never bored and I told my sons and tell our grands do not say the word, "bored," around me as it does not exist. I loved the blackhead removal meme and surely feel bad about it. Tired from grand girl's first bday party with her chimp siblings. She's one tough baby who knows how to strong arm them when they mess with her. Ate her entire slice of cake and may explode.
